R.W. "Johnny" Apple of the Times waxes on about the mangosteen, a "tropical fruit about the size of a tangerine, whose leathery maroon shell surrounds moist, fragrant, snow-white segments of ambrosial flesh." Net net, Apple is besotted with the Asian fruit and liberally uses the word "exotic" as he details how this strange-looking fruit is currently illegal to import to the country and many agree it's sublime ("It is so delicate that it melts in the mouth like ice cream.") Gothamist will have to try one when we go to Asia next, but upon hearing that mangosteen is the queen of fruit and durian is the king, we're more than a little suspicious (durian is a fruit that even Anthony Bourdain won't eat).
Purdue University on the mangosteen.

You can't import mangosteens into the US? What the... Anyway, I would like to assure Gothamist, as someone who originated from a country with plenty of mangosteens, that although the fruit doesn't really melt in your mouth, it is sweet and juicy and indeed very, very tasty.
Then again, I love durians. So beware *shrug*
Durian is quite edible. You just can't smell it beforehand.
Man, don't even compare durian and mangosteen. Durian is vomit-inducing, blech -- the stench!
Mangosteen, on the other hand, is beautiful, beautiful, sweet, quasi-citrusy goodness. I was first introduced to it in Hong Kong, where you can get a dozen for a few bucks, which is important because each one doesn't have much flesh and consist mostly of giant seeds. If they do end up importing it to the U.S., it'll probably be expensive, though. In Canada, you can get them, but they end up being like, 4 bucks a pound, which kind of prohibits mangosteen-splurging.
Frankenstein, I'm shocked!
No mangosteen barbecue for you?
"Illegal to import into the US" sounds like a challenge to me. This article from 1996 suggests that mangosteens are available (in season) on the streets of Chinatown. Mangosteen juice appears to be available under the XanGo label. But their advertizing sounds suspiciously Herbalife-like.
eating mangosteen on the warm tin roof under the tropical stars, listening to the beeb on a scratchy zenith trans-oceanic. sweep the peels away in the morning. thanks for talking about my next favorite. try jackfruit.
It would probably go well with BBQ, but the problem is getting the mangosteen together with the BBQ.
I have to say that I've eaten mangosteens, and while they're quite nice, they didn't really strike me as being entirely out of the ordinary.
What Zod said. The beautiful, wonderful mangosteen shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath with the horror that is durian.
The NYT article is a little hyperbolic, but mangosteens are in fact extremely tasty, and not in any kind of "you have to get used to it" or "it's an acquired taste" sort of way, but in a perfectly straightforward "oh my god, why can't we get these at home?!" sort of fashion. They're sweet, a little tart, and best of all they look like they were designed by the same people who did the visuals for all of the Super Mario games.
Incidentally there is a pretty entertaining writeup on "Johnny" Apple in the current New Yorker- I just happened to be reading it at the same time as this post. Anyway, he is an eccentric guy, I am not surprised to hear about his mangosteen-y hyperbole...
Mangosteens are yummy. So are durians. (they're like eating ever-so-slightly-onion-accented vanilla custard while sitting in an outhouse.)
Though my favorite not-available-here fruit is the dragon fruit (aka pitahaya).
Where are you at, Vidiot? Dragonfruit should be available in most major Chinatowns. Have to admit I wasn't much of a fan, though.
I second the jackfruit recommendation. It's almost like durian's edible cousin. Plus, Vietnamese jackfruit milkshakes cannot be stopped.
I read the New Yorker piece about him too. Here's what R.W. Johnny Apple looks like.
Mangosteen when bad is just bland and ever so slightly bitter.
But when it is good, each seed is a pearl of happiness. (Suck on the meat and spit the pod out.)
I miss tropical fruit.
Durian is just icky.
is this like a jewish mango?
I'm in Noo Yawk City...and I've been meaning to go on a dragonfruit search in Chinatown for some time. (Usually I'm dashing through on my way to someplace else and can't poke in the markets.) Should be a fun hunt.
Bourdain has eaten Durian; once in Asia, and again in the form of ice cream in Hawaii.
johnny looks like a mangosteen...
I grew up in Vietnam. When in season, and perfectly ripe (and the seed vanishingly small), well...refined, balanced, elegant, absolutely addictively delectable.
The first time I ate mangosteen was in Kota Kintabalu, Malaysia. It came in the fruit basket from the hotel. When I opened it, I wasn't sure if I was suppose to eat the thick skin (like eating a plum) or the seeds, which turned out to be the fruit. I waas quite pleasantly surprised by the delicate fruit after I figured out how to approach it.
Does anyone know where to get a Mangosteen in Chicago or Canada?
Our Mangoxan (pronounced Man'go•zan) product contains a whole fruit puree of the mangosteen fruit along with other healthful and delicious fruits in a delicious daily nutritional supplement. Find out more at www.mangoxan.com.

I have not yet had the privilage of tasting a fresh mangosteen, but like one or two others here, i am a rep for Xango. The reason being i can get my mangosteen juice at wholesale. I have noticed several health benefits with myself and family over the past few months, so much so that i'm thinking i might actually "do" the business.
Yes it is network marketing similar to herbalife, but its not like you have to sell anything....just tell others about this delicious juice.

I AM A REP FOR XANGO AND ALSO FOR NEW VISION I HEARD ABOUT THE MANGOSTEEN AND TRIED XANGO JUST BECAUSE I COULD GET IT CHEAPER BY BEING A REP. THEN NEW VISION CAME OUT WITH THEIR PRODUCT AND I FIND IT HAS HELPED ME MORE THAN XANGO, I HAVE BEEN TAKING THE NEW VISION VITAMINS PLUS WITH MANGOSTEEN AND ALOE AND WOLFBERRY JUICE IN IT AND IT IS MUCH BETTER THAN XANGO. PLUS IT IS CHEAPER.
I checked out that Mangoxan site. They sell a mangosteen fruit juice that is not a MLM ploy! I'm excited about this because I don't want to sign up for anything. I love the taste of xango but mangoxan is a less expensive alternative for me. Just thought I'd give a heads up to those of you who like this mangosteen stuff.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I managed to locate some mangosteen during a recent visit to NYC!
If you have some interest, check it out!
All you proud XanGo distributors out there, looking for a killer free site to help market XanGo worldwide?

(Free site link at very bottom of above site)
Mangosteen could be THE most significant discovery
in health care of the century, but to sell it as an MLM company? As an english man I can not go along with that.Although I would be willing to market it in Eorope without the MLM tag.

Mangosteen.
Thank you.
The Xango juice is made with the rind and that is the part with the most medicinal properties. They have patented their product so they can't be copied. It's priced fairly and they have thought it out thoroughly. In fact I'm thinking about joining in they're crusade.
Sounds like a worthwhile product.
John S.

The $12;00 price would seem more realstic
I have never seen nor eaten a Mangosteen before, but I have tried both Xango and New Vision's VEMMA (vitamins, essential minerals, mangosteen, aloe vera, (and green tea)). The taste of both is great. For 3 weeks my husband was on two doses and I was on one of the Xango. We both noticed benefit in energy and less achies.
Then a friend in Xango told us about a free trial offer from New Vision and asked us if we would try it and make a comparison. We did. We haven't even looked back. Our Xango upline would never tell us how much Mangosteen per oz is in the Xango. But New Vision does tell how much.
85 mg per ounce. 900% more Xanthones than what is in Xango. We also learned after we were in Xango at the cost of $100 each order for 4 bottles and that's the only way you can buy is as a distributor at $100 of product, that 3 - 1 oz doses per day is required to be a maintenance dose. One person would go through a bottle in 8 days at the cost of $25 + shipping. 25oz bottles.
With New Vision's VEMMA, 1 oz per day is a maintenance dose. You can do therapy doses of up to 3 oz per day if you need to. You can see there's more mangosteen and pericarp in the New Vision as compared to the Xango when you look at it. Comes in 32oz bottles for 32 days of product.
And with New Vision's VEMMA you can just be a consumer or you can also choose to do the business, just $14.95 to get started as a distributor. The free trial offer is also $14.95 for the shipping and handling and you get the VEMMA Nutrition Program for 16 days to try on the company. Which makes it really easy to tell other's about it.
This is our experience with both companies.
Is there anyone out there that has also tried both?
I've been on Xango for 2 months. I really can't tell any difference. Please send me info on VEMMA.
really, isn't it just a kind of jewish mango?
Vemma, pronounced VEEma, is a, soon to be released, re-branded version of New Vision's existing Mangosteen Plus and Essential Minerals. Vemma will soon be available in one, two or four bottle quantities with free shipping for consumers. Most of the xanthones in mangosteen are found in the pericarp (rind). If you're looking for xanthones, Mangosteen Plus contains significantly more pericarp than Xango does. The combination of vitamins, minerals, mangosteen and aloe in a convenient, great tasting, liquid formulation provides a very solid nutritional foundation.

Since it seems a couple people have been able to get their hands on a whole fruit (but in other cities), I was wondering if anyone knew if I could get one of these mangosteens anywhere in or near San Francisco. I'm just REALLY curious now after reading so much about it, and kind of pissed that I never heard about this fruit even though I stayed in Hong Kong for 3 years at some point.
Being born in Rangoon, Burma, (Myanmar) I have a vivid memory of eating both Durian and Mangostin every other week. We always looked forward to our
family feast. I wish I could get these fruits in California.
It is all fine and dandy, But according to the state laws, New vision I hear is in Patent infringement and will be ordered to cease and desist very soon.
Not a very good way to start to brand a product.
Best if you try not to mimick another companies succeesful discovery (Xango) and try to be different.:
