2003 Emmys Wrap-up

Garry Shandling and Brad Garrett make out

One word: Boring. Okay, maybe seeing Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci together is cute, and we liked that Fred Rogers got two shout-outs, but come on - Doris Roberts for the third year in a row? Tyne Daly again? Gothamist spent our childhood watching Tyne Daly rack up FOUR Emmys for Cagney and Lacey - hey, Television Academy, she's talented, but spread the love. This is why no one cares about the Emmys, when Frasier or Kelsey Grammer wins year after year. John Larroquette won four Emmys in a row for Night Court - his randy D.A. Dan Fielding was funny, but not THAT funny. Ugh, we were right when the nominations came out earlier this summer: We weren't happy while watching.

The Emmy winners and the Times on the Emmy winners.

The Daily News' David Bianculli was underwhelmed with the show as well and the Post's Adam Buckman points out the tackiness of mentioning the tribute to John Ritter during commercial teases from hour one of the telecast, only to actually air it late in the third hour.

Updated: Anthony at City Cynic blogged highlights of the show and, in fact, enjoyed it. While Gothamist does concede Conan and Jon Stewart were fun, the show still sucked in our book and we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Alright kids, I'm going to have to jump in here and call a timeout on you! I, too, watched the Emmys and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and hilarity.

Sure, Dennis Miller didn't need to be there, but you have to laugh at the kissing, Conan O'Brien tap-dancing, kitten-in-the-loser-basket sketches thrown into the show this year.

Here... I, as usual, blogged about the awards show highlights, just in case you forgot your funny glasses. Even more fun, it's in easy-to-read hilarious bullet format with commentary and photos!

Nice wrap up, but still, boring. Yes, Conan and Jon Stewart were great, but there was still relatively very little of them. Next!

Jon Stewart was hilarious - although I got the sense that the audience was too stupid to actually understand his jokes... Also, Tyne? How many times will that cow win? And who the hell is voting? a bunch of 90 year old Beverly Hills retirees?

user-pic

whatever. Tyne daly rules. but i wish Frances Conroy had won. and peter krause. or keifer. But Doris Roberts? AGAIN? and Edie Falco and Fatty McMobster-AGAIN? screw that show man. and f the west wing. and freaking raymond. the emmys sucked.

user-pic

Jesus. I'm sorry but whoever said they enjoyed that crap probably enjoys Everybody loves Raymond.
I knew it would suck when I saw Gary Shandling ramble on without being remotely funny.

user-pic

Seriously, when Garry Shandling has to resort to making out with Brad Garrett to be funny, you know something is wrong.

What about Ellen DeGenneres...awesome as usual..hilarious. The bright spot in the boring, what are you wearing, predictable wins, night. It should have been all Ellen, all John Stewart.

What was up Bill Cosby's ass? Could he have been nastier to Wanda Sykes? Good thing she knew to back right off and focus on someone else (Larry David). And, what's with the shades, Bill? Are you too cool now that you got the award?

user-pic

could Wanda Sykes have been LESS funny? I will forever despise the Emmys for having aired on Fox, and will certainly never watch her show. hated the comedians, but Conan made me laugh and laugh. and, were all those people who climbed on stage after the West Wing win really affiliated with the show? there were 100s!!

Wanda is just not Bill's kind of of comedian. He dosn't like street talk. His show was about a WASPish black family. He talks like an educated man (he has a PhD in Education from UMass) and most of his characters talk standard English. I'm sure Wanda does not represent the kind of black image that Bill has always promoted.

Re the awards: The Emmys, like the Oscars, are voted on my the insiders many of whom are old and no longer actively producing. They are always behind the curve. They tend to recognize long established actors and they tend to recognize the same stuff over and over again. The Sporanos is about as edgy as they get. The much better Six Feet Under was completely snubbed.

Regarding Cosby's self-righteous indignation with Wanda Sykes' comedic use of urban speech patterns; I wonder why Cosby finds it so easy to overlook a pioneer in that type of racial stereotype...Himself!

Doesn't Cosby remember his characters Mushmouth and Rudy from the Fat Albert Show that he referenced in his acceptance speech at the Emmy's? If he wants to 'bash' characters in a TV show that are unable to speak "English" correctly, perhaps he should start with his own 'backyard' first.

How can he be given a humanitarian award and yet feel that it's alright to come off as such a hypocritical ass on the SAME SHOW?!! I've been sick of Cosby's politics for years but that little public display was a quick glimpse at the truly arrogant soul of the man.

Thank you.

Bill Cosby had every right to react to Wanda Sykes the way he did. If I had to sit through a live show with comedians who counted on the CA Gov. race, gay issues and the problems in Iraq for laughs I would not be amused either. This was the worst emmy's show to date. The only interesting part was the Cosby tribute and the memoriam portion of the show. TV in general has degraded to the point that I watch only 2 hours of Network tv a week. I applaud Bill Cosby for high standards and wish he was a network exec.

Bill Cosby was rude and the sunglasses were idiotic.

user-pic

What Bill Cosby did was uncalled for. I agree with Shard66's post about Bill starting off with Fat Albert and voicing the characters who spoke urban slang. While it was a cartoon, you didn't see anyone speaking "English" as he considers it. (Wanda should have called him out on that. Granted, she wouldn't have a show anymore, but still.)

I liked the comedy (Bernie Mac's comments were appropriate, but I think a large majority of the audience missed the point), especially Conan's bit and Jon Stewart's news coverage. Although Wanda wasn't her funniest and died out there twice (I think the "losers" bit was funny), I applaud her for being professional and still doing what she had to do with the right energy. Her makeup was slammin' too! (Yeah, Honorary PhD Cosby, "slammin'.")

Back to Bill, um, since you've launched the careers of many black entertainers today, you really should support our people more. There weren't but 10 of us out there anyway and we're slowly dwindling as the largest minority. (I could get into the whole debate on race and how some groups are more of an ethnicity than a race, but I won't.) You really need to rein it in. She was dying out there as it was and it's apparent that everyone else out there doesn't like her comedy and then you come along and show your butt. Real classy, Bill. Real Classy. I respect your work and career, but not you so much anymore. I completely understand the need for intelligent blacks in entertainment lest we fall back into the "Amos and Andy" days, but I really think that's how Wanda speaks. She can work on it, but she's fighting her way up with it and I think she's doing well. Bill, you were the last person I thought would become an "uppity Negro." And to think that I looked up to you - oh well, now it's down to two: Oprah and Denzel.

Also, what was with the sunglasses? I'm not trying to be funny, but did he have cataracts removed?

I am not a big fan of Wanda, but I can't stand it when someone (Bill Cosby) makes a pointed attempt to embarass and humiliate another person simply because he/she doesn't approve of their style. I mean for godsake, she isn't Hitler.

It simply wasn't the place to express his distaste for her style of comedy and he was very very rude, out of line, made himself look like a creep, was a real downer all around.

I wonder if he is proud of himself. My opinion of him is much less now.

user-pic

Yo, all y'all need to slow up and stop feelin sorry for annoying ass wanda. You shouldn't try to embarass someone on national TV like Cosby did Wanda? Too bad thats why Wanda started her live schtick at the Emmy's, so she could catch celebrities off guard and make them look stupid. Make the white people look "white", make as many slurs as you can, and come off righteous cause she's about as minority as you can get in the entertainment business. Guess what? Just cause you are black doesn't mean its OK to make fun of white people, and just cause you are black doesn't mean bill cosby can't smack some since into your weave. There is nothing more annoying than listening to that dumb slut's garbled sentences in her high pitched voice. Bill Cosby says "speak english" and i agree. You aren't even ghetto anyways Wanda, read a bio and you will see. The greatest thing this year is hearing that dumb bitch speechless after Cosby made that statement. That silence was so sweet. Oh yeah, to all you clever people who have read other boards and realized the Cosby did MushMouth, on Fat albert. Guess what? That wasn't his show, he was paid to be the voice of a character. Wanda has her own show, has creative power, and most importantly control. She has control over how to speak in her stand up too and Bill stung her good. The problem is everyone likes to hear the mysognistic rap and see the dumb african american stereotype. When a black man has integrity and speaks correctly, they call him and uncle tom or a sell out and criticize him for trying to uplift the black man's position in america. Props to Bill, screw all who disagree.

I met Bill Cosby. He was an ass then and he was an ass to
Wanda Sykes. She was trying to do her best and he saw
an opp to shoot her down. Since his sons' death he has been
very bitter towards blacks that he consider lower in rank.
Let's all remember he is and actor. Bill Cosby the man,
is an arrogant race hating person...

Very funny comments. I knew the black community would be upset by what he said.
The danger is from within people... it's the 21st century

user-pic

I wonder if Bill would have made that comment to a white person who didn't speak "the king's english." I wonder if his distaste is only for the "black adulteration" of the english language. I wonder if he would've said that comment to Fred durst of Limp Biskit or Eminem. Anyway Bill, who defines what english s supposed to sound like. I don't think that any of us speak english as it was first spoken in England. Bill is a self-proclaimed "champion" of and for the black race but sadly still lets whites dictate his views (such as the way the language is supposed to be spoken).

I hate when anybody slams someone of their own race, color, ethnicity, whatever. You expect (unfortunately), someone from 'without' to do it. So you think,"What an ass", feel like smacking them, but don't, and walk away. But when I see someone from 'within' doing it, I have even less respect for them. If Cosby had a problem with Wanda's "thang", he should have taken her aside later, not on-screen, and discussed it with her intelligently. If he was trying to make a point, he failed miserably. Shame on you,Bill.

Shard66: "Doesn't Cosby remember his characters Mushmouth and Rudy from the Fat Albert Show that he referenced in his acceptance speech at the Emmy's? If he wants to 'bash' characters in a TV show that are unable to speak "English" correctly, perhaps he should start with his own 'backyard' first."

You said it, pal: "characters in a TV show." Mushmouth and Rudy were characters, cartoon characters at that, in a television show. They are characters who did not speak proper English, but Bill Cosby is a man who does.

Wanda, on the contrary, who bastardizes the English language when playing a character as well as in ordinary situations. You can't possibly compare these two.

J: "Bill, you were the last person I thought would become an "uppity Negro." And to think that I looked up to you - oh well, now it's down to two: Oprah and Denzel."

I'm shocked that you have the gall to utter the phrase "uppity Negro". Your attitudes indicate that you want to keep Blacks down, figuratively speaking of course. When a Black person choses to pursue a higher education, or decides not to allow themselves to be vicimized, or does not fit the stereotypical profile of a Black person, are they "uppity negroes"? In your books, yes, but in my eyes they are the kind of representatives we need for our people. (By the way, you can cross Oprah and Mr. Washington off of your list; both of them have university degrees and are far more eloquent than Wanda.)

C: "I wonder if Bill would have made that comment to a white person who didn't speak the king's english."

You can't formulate an argument based on something that hasn't happened. You've made a judgement on the man on the supposition that he MIGHT act a certain way if another situation arose. Form your point on something concrete, not hypothetical.

Bill Cosby is, in two respects, superior to Wanda Sykes. One, he is a Doctor of Education, while Wanda has a Bachelor of Science. A great achievment, yes, but it's no doctorate. Secondly, Cosby's entertainment career is much, much more established than that of Wanda. His theatrical endeavours span four decades, which include "I Spy", "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" and "The Cosby Show". Wanda has had a few roles supporting, or tagging along behind, Chris Rock. Titles include "Down To Earth," "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps", and "Pootie Tang". Res Ispa Loquitur, the thing speaks for itself.

Damnnn. Chill a little, you two. No one is "better" than anyone else. We are all born equal. We are all given different opportunities and challenges to make what we can out of them. To say someone is "better" than someone else especially if they're more educated or richer, is sinful. There are many good people out there who don't have great jobs, higher education, or fancy jewelry. Their riches are in how they treat their fellow human beings and all of G-d's creatures. Tell me, did Ghandi have a doctorate? Does Mother Theresa? And by the way, a lot of these movie stars are given "honorary" degrees, also. And as far as established careers, Bill had to start somewhere. He actually had and has the advantage over Wanda. She's black and FEMALE!! So don't even begin to tell a woman she's had it better than a man when it comes to being treated equal. Women struggle to be treated more than second-class citizens in most societies regardless of religion, color, race, etc. I'm sure by the time she gets to be his age, Wanda, will be "established", too. In the mean time, everyone should look in the mirror and judge that person first. If you don't respect yourself, how can you respect others? Cosby should get himself an extra large mirror! By the way, did you know that Fat Albert, Mush-Mouth, etc. were schoolmates with Bill. His cartoon character portrayals were based on real live people he went to school with! Let's see, he got us to laugh at fat people (Fat Albert), and at developmentally disabled people (Dumb Donald, Weird Harold, Mush-Mouth)who couldn't speak, think or act right. In other words, he got his start making fun of the socially and physically disadvantaged in our society. Nice work, Bill. P.S. In all fairness, Bill did rise himself up out of the slums, served in our Armed Forces, continued his education and HAS done valuable work to progress civil rights. Butttt...that does not give him the right to look down on someone who is where he was at one time in his life. So I'm not angry with the man, I'm angry with his behavior. If anyone should be tolerant, he should be.

He is my no means a better person, there is no way to be able to measure that. But he is more educated than her, and more successful, so in that respect he is "better" than her.

David Beckham is superior to me when it comes to playing soccer; Virginia Woolf is better than I am at writing. In every aspect in life there are people who are not as good as others. That is not to say that they are not as worthy as other humans, not in the least. All I'm saying is that in every area in the real world there are people who can't measure up. It's a fact of life.

Thank you Dardarian, and shame on you Mia for even allowing yourself to if only for a moment to believe that a higher degree in higher education determines one human being being superior to another. It seems as though you have been illusioned by external gifts. Do you know Bill Cosby on a personal level? Do you know anything about his character? Do you know anything about Wanda's? I do not give a damn how much money you make. I could care less about the type of car you drive or how far you can kick a soccer ball. I do concern myself with how you treat your fellow man or woman. I am interested in the respect you show for others, your compassion in accepting that we are all human beings. We all are able to laugh, cry, and smile, we all bleed, we all have emotions. "Better" than her...Mia, Mia, Mia, quit deluded yourself. Re-read your comments then think about what you said. Change is good. However if you can speak on the character of these people, be my guest.
