The Newest Staten Island Ferry

The Times' N.R. Kleinfeld is excited about the new Staten Island Ferry and, quite frankly, Gothamist thinks everyone should be as well: It's so cool. It will carry 4400 passengers and it's the first ferry the Department of Transportation has bought since 1986 and the first of its size since 1965. Iris Weinshall, DOT commissioner, tells Kleinfeld, "For us, this is very exciting. Ferries are very expensive. You don't buy one every year." The Guy V. Molinari Ferry (yes, named after beloved the Staten Island congressman) cost $40 million, and will be christened in Wisconsin (where it is being built) tomorrow. Per Kleinfeld's suggestion, Gothamist has check out flights to Wisconsin to see the ferry, as the ferry won't be coming to NY until September 2004.

The Staten Island Ferry site.

A great Staten Island Ferry fan page.

How are they going to get it from Wisconsin to NY? Sailing the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence???

I hope they have a grand send off for the Kennedy boats, there's nothing better than sitting in the back, saying good bye to Manhattan with a beer and a great view!

They should keep the old boats and dump the 1980s boats. Those things are hideous.

Today is the last day of the high speed no-cars ferry across the puget sound. A GOP led tax repeal has been gutting the funds for the past three years and this group has targeted the elemination of all public busses in Washington State. It is freaking madness and I am that close to driving to Canada and never coming back

I'm sitting in it right now. I think I'll be one of the people on it when it sails to NY too. Just had a spot of down time and did a google search for "new staten island ferry". Was curious to see if our company (which is doing the control/monitoring system) was mentioned in any press. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing, can't wait to get to NY. Never been there.
