There Is Such Thing As A Free Breakfast

Free Breakfast; Graphic - NY Times

This week, the Department of Education enacted a free breakfast program for all students in city schools. The program will cost about a half million dollars, partially offset by an increase in the school lunch prices ($1 to $1.50). The idea behind the free breakfast is that children who eat "regular, healthy meals are better able to concentrate and learn." Makes sense to Gothamist, as we're only approachable after a feeding. But we'd like to drop by a public school to try one of these breakfasts (whose menus will differ in all five boroughs) and feel totally humiliated when we can't find a table in the cafeteria that will let us sit with them.

  • i attend a public high school in queens and those were the exact same items we had for breakfast this week, except the stupid cafeteria ladies dont give them all to you. you cant have a plain donut AND a toasted corn muffin, you can only have one. my school is freaking shitty. i mean its not like gourmet food, but if we're suppose to get everything, then just give it to us. on a side note, we have the same last name jen. i dont think we're related though.

  • I guess they are prepping the kids for juvenile diabetes. Who designed these menus? If they are going to do this, they need to feed the kids better than this.

they're horrible... Nothing but sugar. And what's with the biscuit, carrot bread AND cereal? How about throwing an egg white in there somewhere?

I'm with David. Those breakfasts are like a carb canivales.

    Plain doughnut: good

    Assorted fresh fruit: evil

So basically, it's a mostly bread and sugared fruit drink breakfast? Milk is good though!

Hmm, maybe we're doing a post-graduate year? Interesting.

We were actually thinking about going to the second grade, as K teaches second grade, and we might actually get to sit with some nice kids, if only because we outweigh them at least 2:1.

  • i think gothamist might be able to pass as a super senior at one of the science high schools. asian people look young anyway. that and we all look alike.

Maybe they should spend it on freakin' books instead.

  • Oh, that brings back painful memories.
