This morning brought the surprising and sad news of John Ritter's death. He was 54, and had died of an undetected heart defect, at Providence St. Joseph in Burbank, the same hospital he was born in according to the Today show. Ritter had been hospitalized since last Thursday, when he collapsed on the set of his new hit, 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Daughter.
While Ritter has played many roles, he will be fondly remembered as randy and bumbling Jack Tripper on Three's Company. Gothamist submits that Ritter's physical comedy ranks up there with Dick Van Dyke and Michael Richards, and his natural warmth made Jack's mix of incorrigibility and naivete more believable. For many children, Three's Company repeated airings in syndications on weekday afternoons meant we grew up with Janet, Chrissy, and Jack. We'll miss you, John.

Between "Jack" and Johnny Cash, a sad day.
this is a total bummer. and he absolutely was one of the best when it came to physical comedy--i wish i could remember more about the episode (i haven't seen the show since i was one of those kids you mention), but there was one three's company where jack is at some formal party, in a tux, and they just let this incredibly long (for tv) sequence of classic spastic jack bumbling run on and on, sans dialogue--one of the funniest things i've ever seen on television. he was great in sling blade, too. *sigh* a sad, bad day for johnnies.
this is just shattering- john ritter and johnny cash in the same day. i loved john ritter- and not just for three's company- he was also an amazing character actor. he even appeared on buffy.
it reflects pretty poorly on gothamist that ritter gets 2 paragraphs & there's no mention of johnny cash
Before I knew any better -- I used to dream of the day that I'd be all grown up, and could hang out with my sophisticated friends at the Regal Beagle.
jb, it reflects poorly on you that you post criticism before refreshing your browser.
Bear in mind that there's no team of monkeys churning out this stuff, just our one monkey, Jen.
i know i loved watching three's company over and over and over again growing up, but man, i haven't been able to shake thinking about this all day. he was way too young. now *I* feel old.
thx, John, for pratfalls behind the couch, overheard innuendo and mistaken identities, kitchen door collisions, trips to the beagle, girl-chasing, bistro-scheming, trading zany faces with don knotts, and making a tiny, plain apartment in santa monica look like just the coolest thing.
I did a double take this morning when they said John Ritter had died. And that his birthday was next week. And anniversary. Sigh. Very sad.
John Ritter also guested on Allie Mc Beal as the sweetest, sexiest of all the imperfect guys she ever fell for. His departure from her life, doing "the funny walk" was memorable (practically the only memorable moment in fact). He was Tex Ritter's youngest son, according to the news.
I just want to say that i am going to miss seeing John Ritter
I know I definitely loved watching "Threes Company" and "8 simple rules"...It isn't the same without John Ritter..he added so much liveness and humor to the shows. He will be missed by many all over the world.
i was very sad when i heard that john had passed i was hoping it was only a dream he was the sweetest person in the whole wide world i will miss him so much
