My Big Fat Pet

2003_9_fatpets.jpg

Considering how fat Americans have become is it any wonder that pets are getting obese as well? A new study by the National Research Council says that one in every four pets is overweight. The study gives tips on how to take care of your pet and help it slim down, so it lives a long and healthy life, but since it's the report is available for pay, take a look at the study's press release.

Gothamist feels a little guilty for enjoying chubby pets more than the too-thing ones, so we'll try to stop sneaking treats to the pets we know. But we can't help liking how Adam Sandler's character in Anger Management designed clothes for husky cats. Or finding things like "If a cat looks overweight, it is" kind of funny. But, yes, dear readers, pet obesity is not a laughing matter. "If one cannot feel a dog’s ribs, the animal is probably overweight." Aww...

I admit, I was the "mom" of a fat dog. At one point he was up to 21 lbs. Over the years I have gotten him down to 15 lbs (his ideal weight). I am still mortified to think that I was reponsible for him being so portly.

Lest we kid... fat dogs can have serious hip problems, which can cause major pain and early death...

Big boned cats are cute. Jake's parents have become the unwitting caretakers of a really skinny feral cat in their backyard. I'm not such a fan of the skinny cat.

  • It's probably worse with city pets. My cat does nothing but sleep, roll over, and eat. But even if he wanted to become a feline athelete, it would be pretty hard to accompish in 500 sq. ft. Hence, he's a husky boy. Or maybe just big boned.

Your porky pets photo selects are funny. They wear the same expressions I would if someone tried to take a flash photo of me in a Speedo.
