Hasidic Girls Gone Wild

Phoenix - the Hasidic hideoutTwo 16 year-old Hasidic girls from Brooklyn finally returned home after running away. According to the Daily News, Elky Stern and Frimcha Hirsch left their Borough Park home last Monday, armed with a few thousand dollars in savings, went to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and took a bus as far as they could go. Phoenix, to be exact. Their parents, upset and worried, held a press conference fearing the girls had been killed, but the girls called a teacher, saying they wanted to escape the confines of their Hasidic community: "We're okay, we just don't want to live in the community. We don't want to live in those rules anymore." They had already put down rent money and applied for jobs in Phoenix but the girls were convinced to go home after hearing how worried their parents were, and returning looking more Mall-of-America than Hasidic in tight clothes. They were not immediately reunited with their families.

The hasidic community does restrict their children from connecting with the outside influences of todays culture. Is that wrong? It is certainly not abuse. They are not starving or beating their kids. They are not depriving them of unperverted tools of pleasure, such as toys and games. We are so used to our culture as it is today that we do not realize how perverted and disturbing it has become. We have ten year old girls who are emulating their celebrity idols, and dressing in clothing that thirty years ago would have made thirty years olds blush. It is not as if we have a clean culture and they are depriving their children of it. They are locking them out totally, because even a little peek into our culture could permanently pervert any youngsters mind! I do agree that once exposed to outside influences it is extremely hard to live within the restrictions of an ultra-orthodox community. And there should be a certain age where a child should be given more freedom of choice with what he wants to do with his life. Because eventually he will have to accept his way of life and forcing it down his throat will cause exterme damage to him/her and those around him/her. Such as his wife who was selected to marry him. His children who have to live with a confused and resentful parent. But parents have every right enclose their children in a clean bubble up to a certain age. The same way a catholic parent will not allow her daughter to date untill a certain age, while another parent will. If the entire world lived with the values of hasidic and catholic communities, the world would be a better place, and ultra-orthodox communities would not have to restrict themselves from the rest of the world.

i feel bad for many chasidic jews, i personaly think they have a misconception of judaism. a woman is allowed to look beautifull but of course not slutty. restriction does not bring one to true happiness. happiness and love come from freedom. if u teach someone the beauty of the religion with love happiness and freedom that is when the person will ultamatly be happy doing what he or she is doing. you cannot force someone into doin something they dont want to.

i personaly grew up in a ultra orthodox family, restricted yet not as much as these hasidic families. now i dont even look religious but i still live with my family and they love me so much for who i am because they know that even though im not as religious as them i am still a positive person and ive got my morals and my ideas of religion.

even though you are ex chasidish dosent mean you have you talk bad against them i am also ex chasid but i still respect them

Girlies... you are too young or babyish to think this way... there will be a time (sooner or later) when you will "brech" all these things out... you will become so bored of this kind of life that you will be sooo sorry for what you did... try to find true happiness in the dirty streets... true, at first you are fascinated and like it, but then... it "veps" out... i shun you, just think twice; think of your future life... there are so many people out there, just form a support group... good luck

I Think wut Frumchi and Elky did was a good thing. B/c this was prob the only way they were able to send the mess. to their fam, and everyone else that they r fed up with the way this religoun runs. Why cant u dress normal and still daven and be close to God?

I come from a chasidish fam too. my moms fam is verrryyy chasidish. My mom brought be up chasidish, but when I turned 14 I decided its not the right way of living. With the support of my dad and all the people who care for me I am who I am today. and im def NOT living teh chasidish LIfe. They would consider me Not being a Jew. I'm only 17 I'm gonna be 18 very soon. I Know Frumchi and Elky I spend one summer with her and I can totally see why they did that.

These girls ran away because they were abused there.

The chasidic comunity is very close minded, and very strict they just could not take it anymore.

I just think they comitted a stupid act. by returning to their past.

But I cant really judje them since they had no knowledge of the outside world, and were under-age.

15 yr oldies do not wear wigs. they grow their own hair up till marriage. they just dont wear any pants, mini-skirts, and any other dress that may show them off a little.

I am myself an ex-chasid. I ran away when I was 17. for the same reason as they did.

I think that one day I'll write a book about my past, childhood etc.

Our girls are indeed very beautifull, but we are not able to enjoy them. because of the super strict rules there. girls get married there by the age of 16-18, and they are being presented with the secret (knowledge) of adulthood only after the wedding ceremony.

they dont go out on dates. the parents pick someone for their daughters, and then they (the picked couple) sit down to talk a couple of minutes and... game-over - they'r engaged........Mazel Tov (greeting in hebrew)

  • Free the Borough Park Two!

Borough Park Two (Elky Stern and Frimcha Hirsch) are being reindoctrinated by ultra-Orthodox Jewish group.

I dont know why you all are making such an issue. As a social worker I can tell you that these stories happen daily. Most are a lot more exciting than this one.(Even from the Chasidic community). Personally, I think you guys admire them - by living vicariously through them. As for Cory, I agree with you, Judiasim is fascinating and I can identify with that feeling of respect and fear that you have.

Good luck all of you, and your better off staying home (living off your parents), and coming up with more exciting movies.

  • anonymous

commenters successfully ruled out any chance of badly needed discussion on this issue. hollywood movie casting? how shallow.

  • Cory

I'm afraid of hasidic Jews! They look so suspicious with their strange clothes, etc. But, I must concede, the few hasidic women I see around here in Bay Ridge are CUTE AS HELL. And surprisingly tall.

I must admit Frimcha and Elky are hotties. (Their pictures were in the Daily News article). I would totally go out with either of them; it's a shame they went back to 'the community,' because hasidic jews don't date 'gentiles.'

Judaism fascinates me; I respect and fear it's people.

I'm 75% serious with my casting choices. With those two, the movie would write itself. Think about it ... from the perspective of Portman, the introverted etherial beauty, with possible voice over. Lyonne, the snarky witty bad girl of the two, slutting it up with skater goy boys. They dump their wigs at the bus terminal. Portman finding a soul mate in a 16 year old reform or nonobservant poet who works at a Phoenix tasty-freeze. They only share one kiss at the bus terminal before Portman and Lyonne return to Brooklyn.

  • Brian

Weren't Elky and Frimcha characters in the "Lord of the Rings" books?

  • Jen

Maybe Ben Stiller could play one of the girls' brother...

  • Matt

I'm with eebmore: We need to cast real Jewish girls in these roles. And since Douglas suggested it in his email address, let's give Boaz Yakin a call for a filmmaker with a real sense for the Hasidic experience.

  • Douglas Aibel

Well, as a Hollywood casting exec myself, I can promise you that if we were going to cast what sounds like just terrific material, it would go to Britney Spears and Hillary Duff first -- assuming the Olson Twins were too busy.

  • I was thinking the exact same thing. As stupid as running away is, I can't help but think that these two girls rock for some reason.

    My casting votes:

    Natasha Lyonne and Natalie Portman

  • Matt

I smell movie! "13" meets "The Chosen"? Hilary Duff in a sack dress? C'mon, Hollywood, what are you waiting for?
