Tribute in Light Documentary

Tribute

Tomorrow night, Tribute, a documentary about the Tribute in Light, will air on PBS at 10PM. A part of Thirteen's New York Voices program, which covers how Ground Zero is being rebuilt, Tribute is ostensibly about the first officially sanctioned World Trade Center memorial but really explores the process of creating a piece of public art, one that meant so many things to so many people. How it actually managed to exist, given its ephemeral nature (it's just light) and temporary status (only lit for 32 days). The extraordinary effort the city and artists put into it to pull it off. And the reaction of New Yorkers and the world. Filmmakers Therese Carfaro and Jayson Haedrich believe that, in the end, Tribute might be as much about the complexity of the artistic process as it is a tribute to all those who attempt to realize public art.

Gothamist is excited to see Tribute because we feel Tribute in Light is one of the loveliest pieces of public art of recent memory with the power to provoke and heal. Learn more about Tribute in Light; designed by Julian LaVeridere, Paul Myoda, Richard Nash Gould, John Bennett, and Gustavo Bonevardi, with lighting by Paul Marantz; sponsored by Creative Time, the Municipal Art Society. and Battery Park City Authority.

Jayson is a good friend from my New Jersey days. Even though I've had my share of embarrassments, he is not blackmailing me to post about this. I am truly looking forward to watching it. But now I wonder if Jayson is going to attempt to film our ten year high school reunion next year...hmm...

Tribute in Light is beautiful, though we lost a little excitement over it once we realized that our living room was illuminated with blue light every evening for a month.

I too am looking foward to watching Tribute.Pure light is such a good representation of all of the lives lost. I will probally also go to photograph the lights on the 11th.
