Father Figure

2003_9_potdad.jpgAh, the responsibilities of parenting or the joys of pot - how do you decide? Well, 41 year old Alvin Allan of Mastic, NY, chose both, as he drove on the Montauk Highway, stoned, with his 11 year-old son in the front seat next to him. The police stopped him because he was speeding.

Gothamist can't help but think of the Partnership for a Drug Free America ads where the mustachioed father busts into his son's room, demanding to know where the son learned to do pot. And the son screams, "From you! I learned it watching you!" And the father's face drains of color...

  • Speeding? On pot?

I had a friend who was arrested for driving while stoned once. She was caught going 10 mph with the blinker on for over fifteen miles. She said later she had gotten into the "click-click, click-click" rhythm of the turn signal.

  • quotey

i've noticed that gothamist likes to apply slogans or quotes to many aspects of life. (i.e.: "when in doubt, throw it out" and today's job/dating bit in the jayson blair piece) well, my friends and i have always used the "i learned it from watching you!" anytime we are accused of something. try it. you'll see it applies to many a blunder you want to deflect.

  • That's my friend Reid, as the kid, in the 'I learned it from watching you' spot. It is his only acting credit and fortunately he no longer looks like he did in the ad, so he doesn't get abuse from people on the street who recognize him.

  • Back in high school, stealing our parents' pot was one of our favorite pastimes (us being my friends and me). They always had much better quality than the shwag we bought. Dr. B_____ always had the best ... which probably explains why when he was giving my mother a root canal, he did the wrong tooth.
