Batman Casting

Since it's been fun to cast The Parker Grey Show, Gothamist would like to look at the casting for the upcoming Batman movie that Memento director Christopher Nolan will be directing. The Hollywood Reporter says that these actors are in the running:

2003_9_cbale.jpgJake Gyllenhaal
Christian Bale
Joshua Jackson
Cillian Murphy
Henry Cavill
Eion Bailey
Hugh Dancy

Clearly, this Batman is young and hot, but not in the prettiest way possible, and we think Bruce Wayne needs to be funny, but not in a forced way, though not having Joel Schumacher as director helps. Gothamist is throwing our vote behind Christian Bale, because he can definitely played unhinged as well as do-gooder.

Yes, yes, Christian Bale! He is so freaking hot. Also, can Joshua Jackson please go away? He is yucky.

user-pic

who the hell are the last 5 guys listed? They suck because I've never heard of them. Christian Bale however, is always welcome in my bed.

Joshua Jackson is Pacey Witter from Dawson's. Cillian Murphy was in 28 Days, but some of his press photos make him look way too pretty - when we saw 28 days which is supposed to be all gritty, Cillian Murphy cleans himself up, Peter Rojas snorted and said, "Yeah, he's so male model now." Murphy is supposed to be very very pretty in The Girl With the Pearl Earring. Eion Bailey was touted as next big thing in this TV show by the creators of Party of Five that got cancelled soon after; other stars on it were Michael Weatherly, Scott Bairstow, and Jennifer Garner. The other dudes are also British.

Don't you think Christian Bale is a little too creepy?

user-pic

I saw Laurel Canyon and I was not too creeped out. But if j0sh and Jake mention American Psycho one more time...

Christian Bale gets my vote!

user-pic

Howard Dean for Batman in 2004!

user-pic

I agree with Joshua Jackson needing to go far, far away.

My vote is for Jake Gyllenhall who is very adorable although I can't think of a single movie I've seen him in.

How are any of these guys Batman material? Batman is supposed to be
a) huge and built (he's a DC Comics Hero hero, not a Marvel Comics anti-hero, like Tobey McSpiderman),
b) older (these guys could play Robin), and
c) a classically handsome playboy not a dishevled looking hipster (he runs an eponymous multinational company not an internet startup, lives in a mansion not a live/work loft in Williamsburg, and has a butler not a weblog).

I'd vote for Jonathan Rhys-Meyers -- I think he'd make a great Bruce Wayne.

I think that this Batman movie is different from the four other movies - it's like a prequel of sorts. It's more Dark Knight than what we've seen. I should have been more clear.

From movies.com:
The fifth installment was initially based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Batman: YO, a film-noir-infused, four-issue story written in 1987 and published by DC Comics that detailed Bruce Wayne's first year as Batman, including the self-doubts and blunders he had to overcome in order to emerge as a full-blown crime fighter. Now director Christopher Nolan has taken over the series, with the film based on another script, titled Batman: The Frightening, which features The Scarecrow as the lead baddie.

They shoulda kept it based on Batman: Year One.

The other thing they coulda done is adapt The Dark Knight Returns, though it doesn't really have the kind of mass-market appeal that I think WB is looking for in this franchise...

Eion Bailey's show was "Significant Others." It was awful. Really, really awful.

Bale would be my vote too. Joshua Jackson is fast becoming the Danny Bonaduce of his generation. He should be no where NEAR the list.

user-pic

Yeah, who are all those other guys? I've never heard of them--I feel old.

I wrote to Christian Bale way back when he did Empire of the Sun and got an autographed b/w 8x10. It was thrilling! But as an adult he doesn't do it for me anymore.

I vote for Gothamist's Jake! Doesn't he have the whole Batman brooding/steely-eyed/youthful wisdom thing going on??

user-pic

If they're going to cast a Batman: Year One-aged actor (gotta pick up that book now) they should go with that concept. If they want to do the Scarecrow, they need to find an adult Batman. If they try to have it both ways it's going to blow more chunks than a Goonie's girlfriend.

user-pic

dawson is the icky one, not pacey! as for this list of contenders, christian bale for sure! he's the manliest of the lot. besides, the others look like the sort that would wear trucker hats on their days off.

user-pic

Christian Bale gets my vote for Batman strictly based on his American Psycho role.

user-pic

I vote for Patrick Bateman...if he doesn't get it that Bale kid would be alright.

user-pic

I'm with Rick Moranis...

Cruz Bustamante in "Batman" 2004!!

"Every citizen of California enrolled in my 'Branches of Honor' program so families may receive a living tree memorial in honor of a relative who died in the Iraqi war."

user-pic

obviously christian bale is the only one here who is crazy enough to play batman- the guy that gets the part has to be a little unhinged...

user-pic

I hope thaey don't re-use the previous 4 installments' bat costume. I hated that rubber mask because Batman could never turn his head without turning his whole body. Made it look like he had a broomstick up his ass.

Christian Bale, yes.. but he won't do it. Did you see Laural Canyon?? SO GOOD! I think Jake would be second choice. beyond that.. f*ck the rest!

one more thing. FDL -- if you didn't see Jake in DONNIE DARKO! go now!

Am I the only one who just doesn't like Jake Gyllenhall? In the very few films that I've seen him in he just hasn't done a thing for me. And as a loyal Batman fan (even a fan of the really bad Batman movies) I'd be crushed to have him in the role.

user-pic

Dont count Joshua Jackson out, the guy can do dark. Too many people focuson his Dawson's Creek past. I cant actually see him in the role but I think it's unfair to attach the fluffy Dawson's Creek stigma to him. EIther way, I cant stand Jake Gyllenhall. I'd take any of the other over him.

user-pic

I'd definitely like to see Joshua Jackson as Batman. He's a witty and charming character. And I agree..Jake?

user-pic

People have no idea what Jackson is capable of. I heard he actually has a shot at getting this part and will blow people away.

user-pic

Christian Bale for sure!!!
He is a perfectionist and he would play an perfect Batman.

user-pic

Yes my man christian has done it!!!

user-pic

Shit.....nooo!!!
well....Christian Bale is not bad.....but...the others???? X__X

I definetly gotta hand my vote over to Joshua Jackson he really hasn't gotten a shot at any big movies since his leave with Dawson's Creek. Everyone thinks just because he was on a teen-drama he can't do anything else. I bet if ya gave him a shot he could do a good job. It would be different to see a fresh face on screen. Christian Bale; i'm not a big fan f his i thought he blew it in Laurel Canyon. Jake is alright, But my vote will remain with Mr. Jackson.
