Tom Goes Japanese

Tom Cruise met with dashing (in looks...Gothamist claims no knowledge about Japanese politics, barely able to keep our own country's goings on in check) Prime Minister Koizumi while promoting his upcoming Oscar-contending film, The Last Samurai. They apparently karaoked to an Elvis tune. And for some reason, reporters made Cruise say, "I think he's a charismatic and very intelligent man," while really, what else is a visiting super star going to say about his gracious host?

The Last Samurai's new trailer is much better than the first...in fact, it makes the case why one should see the film:
QT - Small | Medium | Large
Windows Media - 56 | 100 | 300 | 500
Real - 56 | 100 | 300 | 500

Ah yes, "The Great White Man Conquers Asia Part 15". Brilliant. Please promote this even more. This site is going the way of gawker.

Jon,
Tom Cruise = $$$. Tom Cruise in action flick in Asia = $$$ + palatable to the general American public. Let it go. Be nice to Gothamist, clearly an entertainment blog not a political one. Or I'll get that hawk in Central Park to claw your head.

$$$ or politics or not, tom cruise has too many teeth. and he's dead inside. dead.

It's always struck me as weird that TC needed to get braces, because his chompers have always been rather dazzling. I am afraid of what it will be like all straightened. Additionally, the braces thing is weird, because he would get them taken off while he was making a film. What good is that, to have braces for a few months, take them off for a few months, later, rinse, repeat?

i think he had braces for bite issues--teeth tend to squish together as you get older, and in his HUGE TEETH case, that could cause serious nibbling issues. in fact, from a interview with eonline:

EONLINE: How can your smile, of all people's, be improved?
TOM: I did a lot of research for my kids, looking at their teeth development, and my upper teeth were coming down hard on my lower teeth and kind of fracturing them. I couldn't close my mouth.

according to the ever-reliable national enquirer, however, he only wore them for 6 months:

"According to a report, a friend of Cruise's says: 'He used to tell everyone he was fine wearing them but secretly he hated it.'"

I would rather watch a Kurosawa film than anything with Tom Cruise.

So did he ask the Prime Minister about Scientology?

A friend of a friend who works for Invisalign said Tom Cruise is one of their clients. So he could take them off when filming, although it's not obvious when he does wear them.

All part of the early Oscar campaign plans -- quotes about weight gain, difficulty Cruise had mastering fight scene -- in fact, I'm hearing from reputable sources that Cruise will in fact win his first Oscar for THE LAST SAMURAI -- in part because he's supposed to be quite good, and in part because this year is shaping up as "his time" to win -- rather lean slate, no vet actor *(yeah Albert Finney is the lead in Tim Burton's BIG FISH, but Albert is not a tubthumper (perhaps a reason why he's not yet "Sir Albert"?)-- he'd have made the 2000 supporting actor race much tighter if he were) or past snubbee really threatening (one could make a case for Sean Penn, who has a definite lead role in 21 GRAMS and a meaty ensemble turn in MYSTIC RIVER, but that's Sean Penn -- it'll take something momentous and an extreme bit of Hollywood syzygy for that to occur -- though he'll probably be tussling Paul Giamatti (AMERICAN SPLENDOR) for best actor critic's honors -- there'll be expected pushes for Tobey and Jeff in SEABISCUIT, past winner Ben Kingsley in HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, past nominee in Miramax's Xmas darling COLD MOUNTAIN, but the most clear-eyed and sober among the industryites I talk to say its Maverick in a strut)...

Do you think Tom is standing on a box in this photo? Or is he really taller than Junichiro (who stands 169cm / 5'5")?

box. cruise is 5'4 *with* the lifts in his shoes.

delayed correction
I see i omitted Jude Law's name after "past nominee" in my post -== well the last week of summer (apparently) had me in a daze..
