Newlyweds, the MTV reality show about Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's new marriage, did not strike Gothamist as what we should be watching, but Virginia Heffernan's review in Slate tells us we are clearly missing out. Apparently Jessica Simpson doesn't know if tuna is chicken or fish (damn the marketing of "Chicken of the Sea") and Nick Lachey bitches about her to his stylist (a celebrity's best friend, it seems). Oh, and Simpson's idea of dealing with her laundry is throwing them from her balcony onto her foyer floor. Haha, Gothamist would imagine that even the laziest of celebrities would just stuff dirty clothes into a closet or something. Foyer - that means people coming into the house see it. Not that we're surprised, but Jessica Simpson is stupid.

I don't think the show is scripted at all. Though I did read before it began airing, that MTV purposely sent them camping and stuff, to try and make things more interesting (seems they felt the pair were boring).
I think that Jessica TRULY is an idiot, and the fact that she tries to be cute about it, combined with MTV's editing, makes her come across even worse. No, Jessica can sing. I will give her that. However, I have figured the show out finally. It is not scripted, but just like the Anna Nicole show, they either arrange or suggest that they have some sort of activity every day like camping or golfing... their lives are too boring otherwise. MTV really doesn't edit much to make Jessica look stupid. Nick is cheap because in case no one has noticed, the two of them were not that popular before this show. They have both just come out with new singles, but they agreed to do the show before their singles came out, and MTV helped them get noticed again, and they must have been really desperate since I am sure their wedding cost a bundle. No way is Jessica that stupid. She grew up in the most cynical "sweet in your face" suburb in Dallas. Nobody gets in this business for as long as she has and doesn't get somewhat savvy. She can sing, and if you notice, she seems not at all dumb in the studio. And she knows how to really "sell" a performance, something an Anna Nicole never had to do. Read the credits. The last episode said it all in my opinion- Jessica is selfish in bed as well as every other aspect of their lives. Jessica said she would pay Nick to decorate the house, he asks "pay him how?" She says she'll pay him "in bed".... Nick doesn't really seem impressed. He says he wants a raise- with "benefits". This shuts Jessica up immediatly and she quickly gets up to leave the situation. I had never heard about these two people before this show, except Jessica's guest appearance on That 70's Show. As fas as editing goes, of course the show is edited to show the most interesting moments, including when Jessica says something stupid. its a good show, I dont think jessie is really that dumb to be honest, I mean she isnt a genius but they edit it to make her look all the dumber, I also think jessie says half her stuff just because it is really awkward and she has nothing else to say...Nick seems like a really smart guy, he is not just in it for the sex, also because look at his wife, world renowned and the envy of most...I think they both gain
The worst part of the show is the marriage itself - what a horrible example of a relationship! It's like something out of high school: teeny-boppers who are "in love" but who don't seem to LIKE each other, or really even know each other very well. It's not refreshing, it's sad.
some observations, opinions, and predictions...
1)you can't creatively edit jessica's lack of intelligence. creative editing is when nick's talking about the party he went to to jessica and shots are intercut of girls butts wiggling. THAT'S creative editing. where is the creative editing used in her not knowing about buffalo wings, or rigor mortis, or dolphin holes, or chicken of the sea, or $800 lingerie, etc...?
2) her dad may be a producer in the credits, but i'm sure the only thing he initially cared about was getting his daughter publicity. he knows what his daughter is like, he + his wife raised/spoiled her. it's not anything new to him, i'm sure.
3)MTV is smart. greedy, but smart. they don't care about jessica or nick. all they care about is ratings. the way the show is, by now everyone has told everyone else to watch this show where there's this really dumb as nails popstar. just look at how many of us have posted here. we're all watching. i'm watching. you're watching. and that translates into an audience for advertisers products. and that translates into $$$ for MTV.
4)their marriage won't last. and if it does, it'll be years of hell for both of them. and we'll all be there to watch, i'm sure. either way, it makes for great television.
5)jessica has her parents to blame more than anyone for how she turned out.

But she did open up her home, she is an idiot & if Nick had "cohabitated" as you put it, he would not be stuck with her. This is not 1950. It's not refreshing to witness this, I'd give the benefit of the doubt to young married couples, who I think, albeit miserably, frequently try to make it work. Trying is not enough, it take maturity. This show is making my brain rot. I admit, I watched a few episodes (the most recent ones). It's really sad to see a grown woman behave this way and then glorify on being a total idiot. Really, think about it, Sharon Osbourne now has her own talk show. Reality TV paved the way, and she admits it was her idea. I think Sharon came up with this because she knew Ozzie was a train wreck you could not look away from. She knew people would watch (because it's outrageous) and Oz is not pulling in nearly the bucks he once did. Scripted on not isn't the issue. The concept is still the same - "our weirdness will earn us money".
The latest Newlyweds episodes show bits of Jessica's videos at the end. Have you seen "Without You"? It absolutely drips with irony - the "stinky ass" sweatshirt completely gives it away, in my opinion.
If you can't believe anyone would look stupid or weird for money/publicity, think David Blaine, Andy Kaufman, Dennis Rodman, Pamela Anderson(boobs in, boobs out, boobs in...), Jenny McCarthy (a really gross blonde).. etc, etc. Remember, there is a big guy with a camera about 5 feet away. How come social services won't take their kids away like a crackhead that doesn't send their kids to school? I agree- if you don't like the show than stop watching it!! Obviously they are doing something right because the show lasted 3 seasons and look at all the endorsement deals they have gotten. I think they are great and even greater together!! For all of you that think they won't last, who the fuck are you to judge!! They lasted this long. And Jessica didn't have everything handed to her, she started small and had to perform in malls. Good for them and the life they have. Jealousy getes you nowhere!!!
