Avenue Q

Avenue Q

Avenue Q's Trekkie MonsterGothamist went to see Avenue Q - aka "the puppet musical" - this past weekend. While the performers and creative team have roots on Sesame Street and the material is upbeat, the story and songs are gleefully subversive and honest. Songs include, "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist," "The Internet is For Porn," and "Schadenfreude." The cast is a mix of puppets and humans, but you still see the humans behind the puppets, as Avenue Q tries to reveal all (there are even naked puppets, having hot puppet sex, so no taking the kids to this one, unless you want to start the therapy early). Gothamist's favorite part: The "Bad Idea Bears" who appear to encourage the id, whether it be drinking, impulsive sex, and suicide.

Ben Brantley noted that Avenue Q, along with Rent, are the only two musicals that target the under 40 demographic. He also raved about Avenue Q.

Another willfully subversive, and thus totally joyous, musical: South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

I would love to see this show, but is it me or are the tickets particularly expensive? Almost $100 per ticket? Absurd.

There are cheaper tickets...I got the $46 ticket, was in the rear mezzanine, and saw and enjoyed the show.

The theatre is very small and even the "worst" seats are just fine. This show is well worth it, I laughed hysterically the whole time.

what about urinetown. is that a musical?

Hi there from Manila. My friend watched the show on his recent trip to the US. He brought home the soundtrack and can I just say that it's such a revolutionary show. I LOVE THE SONGS!!! Gawd! I wish they would produce the show here. :)
