School of Rock

Richard Linklater. Good. Jack Black. Hee hee. A movie about Jack Black playing a fifth grade teacher in a movie directed by Richard Linklater? Awesome.

Official School of Rock site. See the trailer.

Our favorite Richard Linklater movie: Dazed & Confused.

Our favorite Jack Black movie: High Fidelity. (We do feel he's better as a character actor, versus a lead, but may School of Rock prove us wrong.

It's amazing how when Gothamist decides to share its opinion on matters of pop culture (fav film, song from the fall of '91, fav actor/actress with connected earlobes, etc.), I find myself waving my forefingers between my computer monitor and forehead and thinking to myself "we're like this."

I saw a work print of the film on Monday night and am thrilled to report that it's hillarious stem to stern, cute but not pandering, and even just a little bit moving. Most importantly, Linklater let's Black stretch out and do his thing, resulting in a major belly laughs. When it finally hits theaters, vote with your wallets for more of this sorta' thing by going to see it.

Good to hear, Benjamin. I'm concerned that Jack Black is ho-ing himself out for cheap yucks. Then again, if someone were waving cash at me, there's little I wouldn't do.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed School of Rock. One of our favorite movies is High Fidelity. Imagine Jack Black's music savvy character in High Fidelity (Barry) as a school teacher. Joan Cusack's character is pretty vanilla, but Sarah Silverman's overbearing girlfriend character will make you scream.

If School of Rock is one-tenth as good as Dazed and Confuzed, then there isn't anything to worry about. Special bonus: people who saw it only in theaters never believe who played Wooderson.

I am pumped for this movie. More importantly, one of the key scenes was filmed at the St. George Theater in Staten Island. It all went down when I was living there in the fall. In regards to the theater, it is currently shut down after a failed conversion into a dance hall. I have been in there a few times and it is breathtaking. If you are ever in a position to support it in some way I suggest you do.

I also suggest you eat at Cargo, another filming location in St. George.

Yeah, but if School of Rock isn't anything like Waking Life (which I'm sure it won't be) we've got some major problems.

someone, please stop anyone from making mike white's writing into movies! stoooooooooop!

a major (in my opinion) point omitted is the fact that "school of rock" was written by mike white, who also wrote "the good girl", "chuck and buck", "orange county", and a couple episodes of "freaks and geeks". he shoulda been namechecked along with linklater and JB. plus, he's a funny-ass actor.

by the way, although i too am really looking forward to seeing this film, because of the aforementioned folks involved (as well as sarah f*cking silverman), a friend has seen it already, and though he too is a fan of all those involved, he absolutely panned the film and said JB's taken his schtick one flick too far. we shall see.

ha, nice timing. flamingo and i should watch "school of rock" together, and then write competing essays praising/condemning mike white.

Dazed and Confused was nowhere near as good as Slacker, which was a dozen times more original and interesting. And fucking High Fidelity is one of the most overrated pieces of shit ever.

**sigh**

I'm haveing fun with it and I take guitar lessons three times a week from three deffrent people. But I'm haveing trouble trying to find the lyrics so I could learn how to play it.
