Blackout Crime Update

Blackout looting was lower relative to the 1977 blackout, but there were still over 200 burglaries and 11 shootings. Also, central Brooklyn had the most cases of looting. Mayor Bloomberg said, "It is bad enough committing crimes. It is unconscionable to try to take advantage of the public during those kinds of periods, and we won't stand for it," while Commissioner Kelly tried to reassure people with, "Generally, things went well." Hmm. Not for the looted or Gothamist's friend's brother who was punched at a beach in Queens by "Louie from downtown." People are savages.
