Fight for the Nets: NJ vs. Brooklyn

It's like a smackdown between Jen and Jake - if Jake had any interest in professional basketball. There's a fight over the New Jersey Nets (Gothamist knows - of all things!) between New Jersey and Brooklyn. Rich NJ senator Jon Corzine is teaming up with developer Charles Kushner and other NJ politicos (Governor McGreevey, former Senator Torricelli) to keep the Nets in NJ, countering NY developer Bruce Ratner's plan to bring the Eastern Conference champions to downtown Brooklyn. (There is a third interested party, Charles Wang, former chairman of Computer Associates who also owns the Islanders, but it's more exciting to say "NJ vs. Brooklyn" than "Long Island vs. Brooklyn.") The "Brooklyn" Nets would factor into a greater Brooklyn redevelopment plan. Gothamist is most amused by Nets foward Richard Jefferson who tells the Post, "I just work there. I got traded once, so I'm just a piece of meat."

Gothamist thinks the Nets have to stay in New Jersey, to maintain their underdog appeal ("God, what's a team doing in NJ?"), but also believes that teaming with McGreevey and Torricelli is bad idea jeans; they are two of the worst politcal leaders NJ has ever seen, this side of Florio.

i think that NEW JERSEY NETS should move to NEWARK. why should we move to brooklyn when we still have some nets fan over in JERSEY. new york already has the knicks. dont be jealous that the nets could win more games and go to the playoffs than the knicks. you got 2 baseball teams 2 hockey teams 2 football teams and now u want 2 basketball teams. i think we should get the giants or jets to be fair. they both play at new jersey. why would u bring the NETS to brooyln anyway. Fuck ratner amd jay-z

BROOKLYN IS A CITY. NEW JERSEY IS A STATE. And by 'several' teams you mean two. Devils, Nets. It's been said before but let's see here, NY has the Knicks, Giants, Jets, Mets, Yankees, Islanders, and Rangers. Do you *really* have the need for two teams in EVERY sport?

  • babz

dont hate on us newyorkers cuz one of our greatest rappers bought ur team ya broke ass city aint shit! we just helping out u guys not embarssed ur selfs so we migght as well take it. plus we gon' have selled out games so dont even bother to come over to my city. brooklyn all day

  • VARTY

i think that the new jersey nets shold be took out of new jersey if there are not fans attending the games if the team in general is going to make more buissness in brooklyn then why dont they move to brooklyn it was mentioned that jayson kidd turned down the spurs to build up a team so why doesnt the general manager help him build up the team by moving the team creating a bigger fan base and increasing the amount of total money brought in by the fans by attending. the last two years they havent been able to sell out there playoff games in brooklyn there would be more people attending and they would most definatly have no problem selling out the stadium.

  • Radeek

Fuck NYC, Brooklyn, Flushing, and the Bronx. Havin dated a chic in NY i been there enough to know shit about that raggedy ass state. what i noticed is that ny aint gangsta, its just dirty. niggas talk with this fake ass accent, say son, dun, and duke more than regular english words, and wont bust a grape in a fruit fight. now im sure there is a thug or two in brooklyn. but its at least one killa in memphis. bottom line, newark is the illist city period. newark niggas fight with fists and guns. ny niggas bicker like bitches on wax. all u supposed to be hood ass niggas in ny come to my hood and run ya mouth like u do on here...im done

Fuck Ratner, Jay-Z, Brooklyn and every mutha fucker in it. Yall NY niggas need to stop taking shit from Jersey and every one else and start claiming shit as yall own. We was in this country first. We support the nets when they were bums. Just a matter of fact, did the nets play in NY already. Now yall wait for them to get good to take them back. Something wrong with that nigga.

Im from Jersey City and living so close to NYC, I think the problem is that the people of NYC have their heads shoved so far up their ass that they can't see the light of day!!! I mean c'mon NYC grow up. Just because the Knicks couldn't win a game against a bunch of kids from the YMCA, doesn't mean that you gotta go grasping for the nearest team that does well. I mean talk about desperate. I mean weren't the Nets in NY at one point and then were moved cause they were so bad, and now becasuse they shove all the bullshit that the Knicks are talking right back down their throats, NYC thinks oh they look good lets take them. What the current Nets are, are what the Knicks use to be!!! The hard fouls, trash talkin (WHICH WE CAN BACK UP), and the style of play are the way the Knicks UES TO BE!!!! I loved laughing at how the Knicks played the helpless little victim during the playoffs against the team that I think would be better off playing in the Garden and who knows how to play the game better then the Knicks who think they are a basketball team and think they know how to play. What ever happened to NYC being tough and stickin by their teams no matter what. If you ask me NJ has more heart and pride for stickin with the Nets for all those rough years then NYC ever hopes to have. If the Knicks had the record as the Nets have had since the 70's, do you honestly think NYC would stick by them, I think not. NYC is just jealous. Plane and simple. Jealous and bitter. Talk about imperealistic. Another thing, this whole thing of how NJ doesn't "Deserve" the Nets. What the hell kind of shit is that?? You know what I just don't think that NJ only deserves the Nets, I think we have EARNED them. All those years of jokes and ridicules from NY, and now guess what NY, WHOS LAUGHING NOW. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......HAHAHAHA!!! ANOTHER THING!!! I thought that NYC borders ended in the Hudson, since when did NYC have control over what happens in Jersey and the Meadowlands. STAY OUT OF OUR BUSINESS. YOU SEE MANHATTAN, THATS YOUR SIDE, SEE JERSEY CITY AND THE REST OF HUDSON COUNTY, THATS OURS!!!! OURS!!!! SAY IT WITH ME NOW...OURS NOT YOURS SO BACK THE FUCK OFF AND LEAVE US ALONE!!! HERE I GOT DEAL FOR YOU NY WE GET THE GIANTS AND YOU GET THE NETS!! HOW YOU LIKE THAT!!!! WHAT CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT TWO TEAMS!!!! People of NYC grow up and get your heads out of your asses then talk business with us about the Nets, until then, the Nets will go to Newark, and Brooklyn remeber you are part of NYC not an indiviual city, so share the wealth. OH AND BY THE WAY YES IM FROM JERSEY AND A NETS FAN!!!!!!! JERSEY BOY 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!

  • Ab

U shit fucks! NJ is one of the best states and they deserve the NETS! Newark is gangsta and ghetto as hell. Brooklyn is just a wannabe city that is so gay. Also, NY has like mad teams in different sports. You people must atleast be thankful for them. NY is just mad because they have gay and retarded teams. They have to support their own teams and Nj supports theirs. NJ is a very small state and basketball is sometimes the only for people to know about NJ. Fuck off you NY assholez!!

    NEWARK PRIDE- BITCH FACE COCKMASTERS!!!

  • Tom

Someone said somethin like "Brooklyn has 0 teams New Jersey has serveral."

If you kids want a team, get the Dodgers back (somehow). They deserve to play in Brooklyn, I'd like to see that. But the Nets? Come on.

Attendance not amazing? True. People have stated why. It could be fixed up I'm sure. And Kidd's been bringing some new life to the team, attendance will be on the rise I think in the next few years if you guys don't cart away our team. And even if people don't hit up all the games you got tons of guys sportin the merch and supportin the team anyway.

Its just wrong. You dont go around stealing 50% of a state's sports teams.

And a last comment, on the "BK pride boyzzz, NJ sucks" crap. I'm glad you enjoy Brooklyn. I got relatives up there, its fun to hit up from time to time. But if Jersey sucks sooo much, why is it every year I see more and more people moving in to Jersey from Staten Island and Brooklyn? Why is it every summer you guys pile out of the city and go down the shore?

    Yea, I thought so.

    NJ pride, punks.

  • Gustavo

I think the NJ NETS should not go to brooklyn but they should git Jay-z has there owner because it will bring more fans.

  • lou

wat is it with all u jersey people talking abouthow u love ure nets & ure NJ pride. prove it, sell out a home game. its VERY sad wen you have the hottest team in the league, playing in the emptyest arena. the only reason the NBA Finals sell out is cuz people like me drive from NY into NJ for the games. SO YEA, BRING THE NETS TO BK, MORE NET GAMES FOR ME TO GO TO.

ps. u NJ guys say that we have the Giants & Jets. they may have the NY name, but they play in jersey, so dont even bring football into this.

i forgot, the Jets r coming bak home. keep the Giants for all i care

  • ricki

    ^^^^FUCK THAT

NJ deserves the Nets more than any other state in the U.S......INCLUDING NY.

  • jay

BK born an Jerz raised, i got luv 4 both, but 4real they shoulda put the nets in Newark ticket sales woulda skyrocketed, bein i live in Nwk now i know more than most of yall speculators how it is, we got a few rough spots but don't get it fucked up Sharpe James has turned the majority of it around thats y afta 9-11 alot of NY's big businesses have been movin ova here more an more money is bein pumped into the revitalization of newark an it's suburbs this is the perfect time for a team to come downtown believe me we got nothin but love for them. but like most i'm not gonna go all the way out to the meadowlands to check e'ry game, put that shit downtown i'll be the first to cop season tickets, that simple. not to mention those fake ass football teams need to claim where they play or get the fuck out of my state. nuff said

    Slick Talk

  • JTM

I think the Nets Should Stay in NJ. The Nets has always been in the shadow of the NY Knicks. The Nets are still underdogs when compared to the western conference. NY is just mad because the Knicks suck ass even with Marbury. If the Nets move to Newark, that would be good. All the dumbasses who say that Newark is a bad place have never been there. Downtown is much better than all of Brooklyn. I think more people would attend games if the Nets moved to Newark because Newark is like the real capital of NJ.

  • BDG

Are the Devils going to move to Brooklyn now too? I looked at the design plans for the arena in Brooklyn and there are Nets AND DEVILS banners hung up.

  • sam-NJ

the Nets should stay in NJ since the team officially began in NJ were moved to NY and rejected sent back to NJ...so no one can tell me there is no fan loyalty to the team...not to mention why in the world would you want a team in brooklyn???this shit hole needs to be taken off the map...at least there some morals and decency left in NJ.

  • Jonathan Torres

I think the nets should stay in New Jersey because we supported them, and everyone likes it here. If they go to Newark, I know I'm not goin to a Nets game anymore, that's were the trouble is. So all I'm saying is, they should think really hard before making this descion, because there going to miss alot of fans missing the game.

  • plubin007

Parking shouldn't become an issue. The third largest transit terminal in the city is right across the street from the proposed site. I'd imagine that the Atlantic Terminal would be connected to the arena through an underground passage just as Penn Station is to the Garden.

  • Spike716

im a nets fan for 7 years, and i think that moving to brooklyn would be a great idea, but the parking would be terrible.

  • ben

    Adam buddy

If the Nets move to Brooklyn there will be mutual benefits for the team and the community unlike their situation in New Jersey in which they can't get anyone to go to the games and so can't make enough money.

Let me begin rebuking your blind comments by talking about the social advantages. You are missing one of the largest selling points about this move: this area in bk has the possibility to flourish with this stadium and the housing and office space it would also provide. This is a rare opportunity to bring a team into Brooklyn because only 100 people would have to be displaced from their homes for his building project, which is a staggeringly low number that would be very hard to equal in the near future. The opportunity to rejuvinate a community and showcase bk pride(rather than nj pride which no one should have) through a basketball team is a remarkable chance that will not come again soon.

Brooklyn has not been the same since it lost the Dodgers way back in my pops era of the 50s. Bringing a sports team back to Brooklyn with a beautiful new stadium, designed not only as a sports venue, but also as a community resurection, is an opportunity that would be devestating to pass up.

Lastly, the Nets in Jesery can't even sell out playoff games whereas in Brooklyn they would definetely sell out every game. Also, Brooklyn has 0 sports teams whereas nj has several (including the jets and giants as much as i hate to admit it). Your point about Brooklyn only wanting the Nets because they have gotten good is just completely wrong because even if the Brooklyn Nets were the worst team in the league they would still have higher attendance and more loyal fans than the current New Jersey Nets.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, Jersey is just about the worst place on Earth--you say there are pretty towns and I will grant you that, but other than let me be generous and say 10 nice towns the rest of the shitty state is the armpit of america. Everyone who commutes from Jersey into the city for work everyday should GET A JOB IN FUCKING JERSEY! Stop clogging up my city by driving into it every day--commuters should have pay for me to take the subway because I can't drive in my own city. New York and New Jersey are not business partners by any means. You use New York; true New Yorkers never use Jersey because everything here is better!

    bk pride bitch

  • Adam

Ok, I am a Jersey boy. I live 12 miles from the city. I love New York. I love New Jersey.

The NJ Nets and Devils are the only sports teams we have.

New York has the Mets, Yankees, Rangers, Islanders, Bills, Jets and Giants (the last two play in New Jersey)

You dont need the Nets, we do.

NJBoy- The Bulls played in a part of Chicago that was not the nicest place in the world, and people still went there. Newark needs the Nets. People would go, well I would definetly being that I have season tickets to the Nets and have had them for the last 10 years.

Sam- I hate to break this to you but New Jersey has some of the most beautiful places in the world, granted not all of it (ie the Parkway and Turnpike) but there are some pretty amazing towns here. Why do you think so many people commute into the city from New Jersey.

New York wouldn't even be interested in the Nets had Jason Kidd not turned everything around. They didn't want them when they came from Long Island, they didn't want them when Marbury, Coleman or Drazen played for them.

The Meadowlands has a lot of problems, top being transportation. If they changed this, or brought them to Newark which is on the NJ Transit line, it would be easy for everyone to see the Nets.

New Jersey isn't New Yorks little brother. We had the Statue of Liberty before you took it from us (even though we still pay for its electricity) . You use us in every chance you get. We use you too. When the towers fell, New Jersey had an incredible lost of life because a great number of people worked there and lived in New Jersey. I would say 90 percent of my town works in NY and lives in NJ. Instead of brothers, I would say buisness partners.

What this comes down to in the end is that none of us have a say in this unless you have millions and millions of dollars to go and actually buy the Nets. In the meanwhile, the nets will be here for the next 6 years at least, being that you would have a lot of construction to do building a stadium in Brooklyn. I'm sure the environmentalists will have a field day with that one.

Oh, yeah, don't you have a basketball team called the Knicks?

    New Jersey Pride.

  • Sam

Which makes me wonder about why Jason Kidd is staying put in NJ. He pretty guaranteed that he'll never win a championship, at least not for a long time. How could he like NJ so much? What are they feeding him? I know they pay him a lot, but San Antonio was going to pay him a lot too. Maybe another year in college would have helped him make a better decision.

  • Jen

Re: Raptors, you mean Jurassic Park?

To Glenn: We've written sports posts before, like about Jayson Kidd's kid. Or bat corking. But happy to make your day.

  • unanimous: I have no personal beef with the Raptors. I was merely looking down the list of teams and saw that the Raptors are the sole Canadian team, so since we sent the Grizzlies to Memphis (they really need to change that name soon) we might as well take them too. Or, how about stealing the Clippers from L.A.?

Really, I couldn't care less. Thank god Football has started.

  • Finally a sports post! You made my day, Jen.

Continental Airlines Arena is a barn. The Nets need to build an arena in Brooklyn and get out of there.

I'd have to walk only a few blocks to see the Kings beat up on the Nets. That'd be so great.

  • Unanimous

Take the Raptors away from Toronto, mike c? People in Toronto actually support the Raptors, in spite of their dumb nickname, so I'm guessing you have some personal axe to grind here.

Hey, Jen the movie buff: which movie was a big hit around the time the Raptors got their ridiculous nickname?

  • at203

I agree that the Meadowlands is horribly inconvenient, but hundreds of Devils fans seem to love their team enough to make the effort to get there. People in New Jersey just don't love the Nets.

They have one of the best, most entertaining to watch players in the league, and they won't show up for him. He even made the decision to turn down the Spurs to STAY IN NEW JERSEY and build a team, and they still won't show up for him. What more could a loyal sports fan ask for? The problem with the Nets is that there are no loyal fans. So it won't matter.

  • As someone who grew up in NJ, but now lives in Brooklyn, I would feel torn about the possible move but for the fact that I don't care about basketball.

The Nets' problems with attendance are the same problems that their Continental Airlines Arena roommates and YankeeNets siblings NJ Devils face. (Unlike the Nets, the Devils won their championship series this year, but didn't sell out playoff games until the third round series.) The Meadowlands is a great place to tailgate before a football game, but a miserable place to go out to eat before or after a basketball or hockey game in the middle of the winter. It's inconvenient to everyone. Unlike MSG, public transportation to the Meadowlands is virtually nonexistent. Unlike the Knicks and Rangers, few businesses own season tickets to the Devils or Nets.

Is there any place in NJ that wouldn't suck to have an arena? Before Dr. McMullen sold the Devils to YankeesNets, he had been trying to build an arena over rail yards in Hoboken, which is convenient to public transport, has stuff around, and isn't scary. Road access to Hoboken isn't as good as to Newark. But, Hoboken residents didn't want an arena there, because traffic would flood the city. This article discusses the demise of the Hoboken plan. Unlike the YankeeNets Newark plan, McMullen's proposal did not call for unnecessary public subsidies to fund the arena.

And why are both the Giants and Jets ashamed to admit that they play football in NJ?

  • I'm down with letting NJ keep the Nets. I feel like NJ is NYC's little brother who is good at basketball and hockey (we have baseball). The people of NJ are very proud of their teams, and they should be. If Brooklyn needs a bball team then I say let's take the Raptors away from Toronto. Or better yet, forget hoops and concentrate on getting baseball back into Brooklyn. Not that NYC needs three teams...

  • NJboy

Newark is a bad idea for a any sports team. I know to many people in NJ who are to chickenshit to go into Newark. I predict their attendance in Newark would be lower than in the swamp.

  • Jen

By virtue of being in NJ, they are underdogs. Trust me.

  • at203

I'm sorry but New Jersey doesn't deserve the Nets. There is no fan support them AT ALL. There's only been a jump in attendance in the past two years since Jason Kidd came on board. And even then no one goes to the games. I went a regular season game last year and the Meadowlands was a ghostland! The Nets were the BEST TEAM -- in the East last year and they couldn't even sell out their playoff games. That is ludicrous. With fans like that...

They also have gone to the finals two years in a row, so they're hardly underdogs anymore.
