Bar Veloce is by far, the most consistent and full of quality bar snack foods, Italian wines, appealing ambiance, and patrons. When I visit this gem of a paninoteca wine bar, I think of the best cup of espresso one will find in NYC. They have two locations: 17 Cleveland Place (near Lafayette and Spring/Kenmare) 175 Second Avenue (E.12/11th) and I heard a third store will opening up near the Chelsea area.

The Times published an article about a year ago (september 25th) that includes many of the same recommendations as the Daily News, in addition to some that are not. I highly recommend 'i trulli' for some solid aglianico.

BAR DEMI 125 1/2 East 17th Street, near Irving Place, (212) 260-0900.

BAR VELOCE 17 Cleveland Place, near Kenmare Street, (212)966-7334; 175 Second Avenue, near East 11th Street, (212) 260-3200.

ENOTECA I TRULLI 124 East 27th Street, (212) 481-7372.

ENOTECA AT SIPORI D'ISCHIA 55-15 37th Avenue, Woodside, Queens, (718) 446-1500.

IL POSTO ACCANTO 190 East Second Street, near Avenue B, (212) 228-3562.

LE BATEAU IVRE 230 East 51st Street, (212) 583-0579.

Belly is a good wine bar though I haven't been in a while. Do they still use the flat glasses that the owners picked up in Spain (at least I think it was Spain). Bar Veloce over on 2nd Ave is another good wine bar, narrow though, serving Italian wines.
