Hitch

Happy Birthday Hitch

Yes, today is Alfred Hitchcock's birthday. Gothamist finds the Google tribute funny, especially since we all know the bird will poop on Hitch's head, which is a nod for Hitch's fondness for poop humor.

Google's Alfred Hitchcock search. Our favorite Hitchcock movies are Vertigo, Notorious, Rear Window, Marnie, North by Northwest, The Birds, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train...hell, we'll take the whole canon. But top three: Notorious, Rear Window, and North by Northwest.

I think "To Catch a Thief" shouldn't be forgotten. Grace Kelly is stunning. Cary Grant is charming. The dialogue feels as fresh and alive as an episode of "The West Wing."

My favorite was Vertigo, with Jimmy Stewart.

Rear Window should have the #1 slot. Am I the only person who thinks that Jimmy Stewart was sexy as hell in that upper-body cast?

I think "North By Northwest" is my favorite. I used to loate "Marnie" until I had a very candid conversation about it with a film professor and wrote a paper about it.

And "Shadow of a Doubt" was his favorite, and has one of the best scripts a thriller has ever had. But then, Thorton Wilder wrote the screenplay. It plays like a really twisted version of "Our Town."

I'm going to have to (in typical eebmore fashon) Marnie is my fav. Not that it was a good movie, I thought it actually sucked (though, perhaps elisabeth could enlighten me on its virtues). At the end it was revealed that Marnie was the daughter of Baltimore prostitute ... and I just can't stop myself from representing.

What other occasions has Google commemorated in this manner? I think Sept. 11 anniversary and 4th of July are the only times I've seen Google do something different.

Actually, what made it so interesting for me was the fact that it's technically unfinished. (This may not be true, I find it a little weird, but plausible.)

Supposedly, Hitch was hitting on Tippie Hedren a lot and she finally just flat out turned him down. He decided to wash his hands of the film and refused to finish it. Fortunately, it was mostly finished, it was mostly edited and lacked a foley track. This is why it's longer and messier than most of Hitchcock's other films. But, in it's way, it's some kind of insight into his process.

But, Tippie is just such a lousy actress and Sean Connery does scare the shit out of me when he rapes her.

Rear Window is so great. So is The Birds. As for other events Google has commemorated, they do an M.C. Escher thing once a year, on the artist's birthday I think.

google knows how to have a good time. Here are the other days they celebrate: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html

I've heard the same thing about the hedren/hitchock fricton. what i've heard(possibly rumor)is that a)what hitchock was into was very very nasty (nasty scene in Hannah and her Sisters nasty). and b) she gave him a big fat NO. Also heard that afterwords, hedren was blacklisted for a time ... although this could be because of her horrible acting.

I think Marnie is finished. And I think that Grace Kelly was to have made Marnie originally. But Prince Rainier said no.

Hitch hit on all his leading women. He hit on Tippi first during the The Birds. Also, during the filming of The Birds, he gave Melanie Griffith a doll of Tippi Hedren in that green suit.

the doll was presented in a tiny coffin, actually.

Hm. Is there such a thing as "jinx!" in cyperspace? As will likely always be the case, Gothamist beat me to the punch. Love this site. And, Rear Window is the sexiest Hitch film, if not the best, in my wee opinion. Despite hitting on his leading ladies, rumor has it that Hitch was nuts about the missus. Has anyone else seen those home movies of them chasing each other around the yard? *totally* bizarre. and sweet, in that kinked-out hitch sorta way.
