The popularity of the Birkin and Kelly bags has made French fashion house Hermes even more protective of its top tier brand, as Ginia Bellefante reports in the Times. Not only is the proliferation blatant knock-offs being tracked down and stopped, Hermes is taking action against anything that seems to remotely impede on - even rubber plastic versions that are clearly not Hermes. An interesting look at brand stewardship and maintenance, Gothamist was amused that when Hermes' lawyers give seminars to customs agents to look out for fakes, "the women agents have all definitely heard all about them."
As most know by now, the Kelly bag got its name after Grace Kelly bought one and made it popular. In the 1980s, Jane Birkin mentioned to an Hermes marketing director that the Kelly bag was hard to open (the other story is that she complained to Hermes president Jean-Louis Dumas that no one made a bag for her needs)...et voila, the Birkin bag.
Hermes has its laywers policing for fake Hermes Kelly bags and Hermes Birkin bags on eBay.

what is up with that jane birkin site? le random!
i think the reports of hermes and lv etc "policing" bootlegs copies has been, for some reason, invented by these companies.
last year in hongkong, vendors on lady street (centre du monde of faux everything) were happy to let me reference huge color industry magazines of various factories and their products. I could quickly see that at least 4-5 factories were ripping of the julie verhoven lv bags i was after, and the vendors were happy to tell me which factories were the cheapest and which the best quality.
the magazines were pro and regular (like hk sourcing guides), all the factories details were clearly listed, and no-one seemed to think that anything particularly risking was being traded.
if these luxury houses really wanted to 'crack down' on pirating, it surely would not be hard...
I think it's policing the copies that make it into the US and Europe - sometimes I feel like they have given up on Asia because one way or another, those crafty Asians will figure out how to make copies. And thank God for it.

that kind of makes sense, but kind of doesn't make sense. i can't believe that marc jacobs hasnt seen all the (generally shoddy) bootleg lv bags they been selling on canal st. since time immemorial. still, i'm with you, some things were meant to be only bought bootleg (diamond encrusted rolexes, coogi knitted jumpsuits, hot-97 compilation cds, etc)

A man named Steven Stolman on Long Island made the rubber version. Retailed for $145 at Bendel's, according to article, but after being contacted by Hermes, Bendel's decided not to reorder.
Anyone remember that Sex and the City episode where Samantha tries to bilk a Birkin in Lucy Liu's name? I always thought that "nobody in a track suit" was carrying a knock-off.

Totally want a Jelly Kelly Bag, I mean, they might not be the best thing there is, but it is cute and stylish to bring to the beach. The type of rubber that it is made from repels sand and water really well. They are selling these bags on Ebay ... but totally expensive. Does anyone in HKG or China know if they can be brought there?
Steven Stolman does not make the bag. He merely imported them from Italy. Hermes is filled with bad karma.
My boss's mother-in-law is currently trying to sell a real Birkin on eBay and has run into all sorts of problems trying to prove that it's real. Which isn't that surprising considering that she wants around nine grand for it. I'm currently trying to convince her to take a picture of herself (think Anna Wintour) holding the bag while standing outside her mansion in DC; it should hopefully convince even the most nitpicky.

you can get jelly kelly bags at a massive outlet store called Foxtown in Mendrisio, Switzerland just 20 mins from Milan. I was there for summer as am moving to Switzerland from Singapore next year. There is also genuine Prada and Gucci outlet stores there.
You can buy 'em at shopintuition.com. I just got one. $165 for the medium-sized one; I think small is $150 and I don't know how much the big one is.
You know, now the big thing in the U.S. is a statement that goes around basically saying that if you purchase a "faux" designer bag, your an accessory to terrorism. It's being claimed that profits from the sales of these fake bags are going towards funding of terrorist organizations who do bombings and acts such as what happened on September 11th.
I'm not quite sure if this is accurate...it seems more to me anyway that this may be propaganda spread by the feds in the US as a helpful way to get people to stop purchasing the fake bags...but I dunno. It hasn't helped matters because fakes are still in demand since the real thing is so expensive and elusive to get.
I have the money to purchase a real LV Murakami wallet for instance....but am I willing to pay the huge mark up on it when I find one on ebay? No....I mean, it was expensive enough in the store, let alone the additional $300 being asked on Ebay. Of course, this is when you CAN FIND a REAL one even.
Ok, Here is the story. You CANNOT get the Jelly Kelly anymore. They can not be sold on ebay. At Intuition in LA, they have a close one but it is not the original Jelly Kelly. The straps have been removed from the front so it no longer looks like the Birkin (though I'm not sure why they ever called it Kelly, it is a copy of the Birkin). I have spoken to a friend of mine who has said she is waiting on the original sample bags but the company is completely sold out and they can not make anymore. Good luck...love mine
I just bought one today at Fashion Island, Newport Beach, CA from a shop called Francesco Santoro who manufactures the most beautiful knock offs of Kelly/Birkin, etc direct from Italy. I got a large and paid $245 which is about $20 more than Intuition charges. I called Intuition today and they said they cannot sell the original design anymore so they redesigned them. Here is the phone number for the Santoro store in Newport Beach (949) 759-8449. They also have a shop in Beverly Hills, Ca (310) 274-3244. They have a small selection but at least they have them!!!!!!

I was just (last Friday night) at the Francesco Santoro store mentioned above in Century City, CA, and they had one that was black in a large size (probably 15" across the bottom). You should call if you want it - I bought a small orange one, but those were the only two they had there.

The ones at jellykelly.net don't seem be the ones that Stephen Stollman had to stop producing them (the jellykelly.net ones have a latch, whereas the Stollman ones look more Hermes-like). That said, the ones at jellykelly.net look so far from the Hermes ones, they can produced.

The bag I just got from www.italy-is.it.com does have the brackets and is identical to the birkin. I have very happy with the bag!!! I know in their pictures there seemed to be some without so you should ask them about this. I found them extremely easy to deal with and fast shipping from Italy.

The only company that sells Kelly's with 24 karat gold hardware is HERMES...All the rubber Jelly Kellys are machine made NOT hand made...They are all the same...some maybe a little differnt becuase there are many differnt companies making them...But you are OVER CHARGING...There are many people in the US that have imported them from Italy, and are selling them for much cheaper than you...and you say you have factory??????

I am amazed at how all these desperate sellers in Italy are posting positive feedback for themselves using different names! Its sooo obvious...they barely can write english.
I just bought a "Made in Italy" Jelly in the Birkin style at Cashmere New York on Madison @ 82nd. It is the medium size and I paid $165.00. It is not the Stolman and doesn't have brackets, which I really wanted, but it is good quality at a fair price. They sold out within hours but they will be getting more. Personally, it didn't seem wise to be wiring cash or sending a money order to a stranger in Italy in the hope of them sending a bag. I would think that a "reputable" seller would have a website or at least the ability to accept credit cards. ALso, the prices are terribly inflated, with the exception being WWW.ITALY-IS.IT
i just received my brown jelly kelly (for the fall/winter) from italy-is.it and i absolutely love it! they shipped directly from italy to the u.s. i got the medium size (35cm) and it has gold hardware and brackets just like the birkin. and at a great price, too! milan has been SO GREAT about helping me find the bag i wanted. thank you so much for making this such a fun experience.

I see a lot of bag comments about www.italy-is.it but I am just a very average person (cant afford the "real" Birkin and wanted something like it in my price range. The bag I recieved from Milan and Sarah is exactly what I ordered and came directly from Italy - not Hong Kong. Had the gold hardware, brackets, good quality rubber, good stitching (I dont know why anyone would think these bags were handstitched as that would make it prohibitively expensive and the idea is that is is affordable for people like me). I did a lot of searching on a lot of web sites and there are many different styles out there but this bag is exactly what I wanted at a price that was far less than most sites are selling them for - go the ebay and see what they want!
Again, I could not be happier with my bag and would recommend Sarah and Milan and their site to any of my friends.
