Let the Sun Go Down on You and a Drink

Sunset at the Battery

The Post looks at a few NY spots to enjoy a sunset drink.
Deck at Chelsea Pier 59 and Rise at the Battery Park Ritz-Carlton both get "4 sunsets," and others noted are Alma in Brooklyn, the Boat Basin at West 79th Street and the Hudson, Water's Edge in Queens. The Post also notes what the signature drink is at each.

Gothamist agrees that many drink beers in a plastic cups at the Boat Basin, but for the full Boat Basin experience, try a Boat Basin Circuit of a frozen lemonade, frozen daiquiri, frozen pina colada, frozen margarita and THEN a beer.

To the nameless person above who asked where to find the Sunset Park Mexican food -- just take the 5th Avenue bus south from Park Slope down past Greenwood Cemetery. Get off and walk along 5th Avenue . . . it's like Mexico-town around that neighborhood, with little tacqerias or small sit-down places lining the streets. They're all fairly cheap. If you're coming from Manhattan, take the R train down to 45th Street ; that lets you off on 4th Avenue, so you can just walk across to 5th.

I especially recommend Rico's Tamales -- it's the place that made the cover of the Voice when Sietsema did his "Best Cheap Latin Food" a few months back. It's just a small stand outside, but you can get a couple of tamales (at $1 per!!!!!) and walk 3 blocks over to a bench in the park. Get the chicken with mole tamale -- it's thick and spicy too, none of this chocolate goo you find at most lame NYC Mexican joints.

Mexicana Mama on Hudson St. in the West vill. is cramped space-wise and a bit trendy but so tasty.

All due apologies for the garbled tense of the previous post. I blame all my grammatical errors on my ineffectual high school English teachers.

If you people left the safe confines of expensively priced areas of the city and wandered down to Sunset Park, you'll be able to buy cheap, authentic and very good Mexican food.

I do enjoy great Mexican, but gimme some guacamole and a margarita, and honestly, I'm set.

Sorry guys, you'll have to come to CA for the best Mexican and Asian food. And I'll come to you for Italian and Greek--and for rich desserts!

I've given up on eating Mexican in NYC. It's pitiful.

where, where, where? good mexican in this city? and by that i mean good, border-style, machaca beef and lard-levened fried corn tortilla taco, carne asasa burrito with not-chunky, blended-down salsa goodness.

  • Warning: Alma has an amazing view and good drinks, although the food is quite overpriced and not typical Mexican fare. If you're looking for Mexican, go elsewhere and then have a drink on their rooftop. View is amazing.
