Madonna's New Gappy Look

Madonna on this September's Harper's BazaarThe Gap wants us to accept corduroy this fall and Madonna as their pitchwomen. Well, based on the new Madonna-Missy Elliott Gap commercial, Gothamist knows this: Madonna is looking more and more like a caricature of herself. The ad starts with Madonna lip-syncing a few bars of her new song "Hollywood" but to the melody of "Get Into the Groove." She walks down a Hollywood backlot street and then out pops Missy Elliott, and they start signing "Get Into the Groove" together. Well, Missy raps. (Does Timbaland know about this?) They are both wearing jeans that have "M" stitched on the bum pocket. It's very tame and boring. They were probably paid in pocket-T's.

Some brand consultant says this is the "coolest idea," having Madonna as the Gap pitchwoman. Well, it's the coup-iest idea, but not the coolest. The coolest would be to have Madonna say how lame the Gap is during their commercial, 'cause that's the Madonna Gothamist knows and loves. The commercials "director's cut" will be shown at 8PM on VH1 tonight, in between episodes of Driven featuring Madonna and Missy Elliott. Yes, we know you're running home for that one.

In other news, according to Madonna's website:
2003_7_qoasis.jpgMadonna.com can confirm that UK magazine "Q" will release a Madonna special issue in September. This will be a 148-page, full-colour glossy Q special edition completely devoted to Madonna, and on sale from 26 September. The magazine will contain reprinted interviews from the Q archive, including the cover stories from June 1991, December 94 and March 98, reappraisals of her key albums and tours, and a rundown of the Top 20 Madonna Songs Of All Time, as voted by fans and musicians. The magazine will have high production values and offer a comprehensive history of Madonna's work as a recording artist, and follows recent similar Q special editions for Radiohead, Led Zeppelin and Oasis.

Eh, Gothamist can make fun of it, but we'll also be buying it.

hey jen,
fyi, "timberland", the artist, is actually spelled "timbaland". otherwise, I totally agree with you on Madonna's associative lamness. why does she insist on looking like a facsimile of Avril Lavigne on the cover of Bazaar? who does she think she's fooling?

Thanks for the spelling shoutout, I have duly corrected it.

It would have been different if the Gap had taken a fashion that Madonna popularized to damnation (like the cowgirl look) from Music, but this is boring. Like, who wants to wear that. Seriously, who?

We'll probably see a rush to stock stores with corduroy pants, shirts, pillows, etc. and then a rush to sell the merchandise at a loss to discounters after the first and only wave of suckers, I mean trend setting customers, have come and gone.

user-pic

Oh hum. I know about a zillion and one indie rocker girls and butch dykes that have perfected that look ages ago. I expect more from Madonna, but maybe she's relegated herself to soccer mom mode.

user-pic

That is called a new look?

haha. talk about "soccer mom." why doesn't she hold a starbucks iced chai latte (or whatever you call that stuff), while she's at it? --carry an iBook with the other hand, too.
If I were Madonna, I'd try to get on Vice magazine or something.

Whenever I see someone sporting one of those retarded driver/orphan/golfer cap-hat things she's got on, all I can think of is that damn "Newsies" movie.

PS Is that a wallet chain?

That's lesbo chic squared, kids. I think she looks cute as a button.

I'm so pissed that I have a Gap card now, I really hate Madonna.

Everything done in that commercial is old news. Oooooold 'fashion' thas been around forever if you know where to look done to 'new' madonna music and with Missy Elliot in there to make it look like its 'trend setting' or something. It's all cheap camios. Gap needs to focus on ACTUALLY producing some new and trend setting fashion and less on making people thing that the are new and trend setting (which they clearly are not...cuz everything they they've done has been around and in done with by the time the gap starts producing it)

Can someone please tell me why Madonna's stomach is black and the rest of her is white in this commerical?!? Am I the only one that has noticed this? Very odd.

I can hardly believe it - - all these years and people are still finding hateful things to say about Madonna. Yeah right - she obvioulsy has no idea what she is doing or how to market herself, I guess she really is a flash in the pan.....oh wait - -NO let me think she has been making music since 1984...what have you done?

Hey Cece,

I was wondering the same thing! Her stomach is dark brown, and so is her lower back on that commercial. It is freaky!

I'm kind of neutral on Madonna, but the first time I saw that commercial and every time after, I can't help but wonder at the color difference on her stomach. This is a mystery. It definately has me thinking more about Madonna and more about the Gap, just not in a way that makes me want to buy their stuff.

i really like madonna.maybe her "new style" is taking on a more conservative mother look. putting herself in Gap ads i don't think are going to do the trick in setting a trend. she is better off doing it on her own. she has always been known to do that , so why is she changing it now?
