The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has deemed either seven or three bars in the city smoking bars. The Post says there are seven, but says some of the special status they were able to have smoking under may be revoked. The Daily News says there are three bars, Karma Lounge in the East Village, cigar bar Club Macanudo on East 63rd, and VFW Post 107 at 2414 Gerritsen Ave., Brooklyn.
The News also reports that the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association are moving ahead with a suit, with their president saying, "We have identified several flaws in the new state smoking ban law that we believe will lead to the court overturning the law." NYC CLASH, "Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harrassment," is filing a suit also.

Interesting. I read the NYT article about the new law changes this morning. Now the only spaces where you can smoke are pretty much private clubs-- clubs that have staff that are volunteers and bartenders that don't have a tip jar. This makes me think about the weird private club down near my apt on Smith Street, which seems to only admit men, except for a lone woman who seems to tend the bar. Smoke billows out of that place. But I think you have to be a special person to get in.
You can still light up at the Standard on 1st, too.
In Karma the other night, it felt like cigarettes were the new contraband: people lolling around, dragging on smokes as if they were opium. Funny how quickly one's perspective changes.
What about Hookah/Sheeshah/Nargilah (I'm sure I've spelled all of those wrongly) bars? Has anyone done a listing of those yet?
As of tomorrow, under the state law, tobacco bars and the 25-percent rule remain legal, but ventilated smoking rooms are illegal and owner-operated bars with no employees are out of luck See this NYT article.
Ooops. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/23/nyregion/23SMOK.html
Since when is the VFW a bar? You gotta be desparate to make that shlep...
I went to Kush on orchard street last weekend, they are a hookah bar and have a big sign on the front window saying "Smoking Permitted." It was weird to go home smelling like cigarettes again, I got used to smoke-free air so quickly...
Agnes, maybe you should have gone to one of the 14,000 other non-smoking bars, then.
if you're in midtown and want to drink over-priced cocktails, the Time Lounge at the Time Hotel on 49th street doesn't seem to have a problem with smoking. They leave ashtrays out and seem to ignore it.
The Gate (in Brooklyn) allows smoking outside, and it doesn't seem to be contained. There's never anyone inside the bar! It's pretty funny. Finally Fred's (Washington Street) allows you to smoke inside, as well.
i for one, and i may be the only one--but i'm old and californian and generally unhip--love the smoke-freeness of the great indoors, even as i struggle with the philosophical, fiscal and legal complexities of the situation. i save a bundle on dry-cleaning and visine and i can *breathe*.
You can smoke at Circa Tabac on Watts.
F**k the Califorians who don't need visine in NYC anymore. By all means leave NY and take a freeloving hippy with you. Nightlife in LA now consists of watching Paris Hilton get drunk and fight ___________(insert name of c list celeb).
Ha!
I love Circa Tabac, but are they exempt from the state ban?
I went and had a last drink at Fish Bar, where you can smoke until tomorrow, this past weekend.
someone give mister f*** a cigarette--seems he's [or she's] having a nasty nic fit. poor thing.
They're Just Starting The Barrage Against Smoking In Public Here in Central Kentucky.Doesn't seem Wierd At All. Considering What FL and It's Lawsuits Has Done To The Economy of this Belt Of The US.As For The Californian,Hey Man You May Be Able To Breath but Look Who Your State Put In The Presidency. I've Lived There CA. It's A Bleeding Miracle you think at all.
I may take up smoking just because I loath Bloomberg so f-ing much.
seven or three bars that i won't be drinking at. my dry cleaning bills have never been so happily LOW since the smoke cleared. and what? my eyes don't burn? --- phenomenal.
dude, what is with the attack on californians? very unsporting.
Rion - does the black smoke from the city buses or the exhaust from every plane, train and car in NY not burn your precious, delicate eyes? I hope you don't get sick from all the pollutants in our rivers or cancer from the overabundance of powerlines and asbestos. Glad your not cleaning your smog covered clothing...
smoking bringing ppl together again *sigh*
Moved to California from Philly two years ago. The first thing I did was ask around about smoking bars. I found one with legal status. I found another where the smoking was just ignored. I remember telling the bartender I hope the police don't bust the place. He pointed out the DA and the sheriff smoking away at one of the tables. Classic.
Every bar I go to where they don't allow smoking, the sidewalk is crowded with people lighting up. I feel like these bans are an example of the many sacrificing to please the few. I think there should be more bars for smokers. If the health nazis of CA want to make a stink, they can just skip the smoking bars. They can go to their bars. If bar segregation is the answer, bring it on. It's as much my right to smoke cigarettes as it is for most of them to smoke pot.
I'm so tired of being treated like a second hand citizen because I smoke. It seems the powers that be don't mind taking my taxes on each and every pack of cigarettes that I buy. Such Hypocricy!
I had a friend from London visiting this summer..I found I couldn't really go to the restaurant of my choice, or the bar or the club.........It's ridiculous!
Let there be smoke free bars for those who want them and smoker's bar for those who smoke. Our personal freedoms are being stepped upon. Where are the Civil Liberty Attorney's? I'm surprised they aren't taking this up with the city and or state of New York.
you guy's in the state's are so lucky!
hookah smoking, shisha smoking or any type of smoking in lounges, restaurants or bars across the UK is now banned and has been for just over a year!
I think having private member shisha lounges should have been the way to go, instead of a complete ban.
