Banksy's Turf War

Banksy Cow; Photo - BBCGrafitti artist Banksy had launched a show, Turf War, with various live farm animals painted in different colors and themes (sheep in concentration camp colors, pigs in police colors) last week. However, the BBC says some farm animals were taken back to the farm early - not because of protestors who chained themselves near the animals to but because of hot weather and stress of looking really stupid and having to deal with protestors: "The severe heat and heavy petting have been causing distress to the animals. It was decided they should be taken back home to the farm this morning." [Via Mindy - thanks]

a stupid idea by a stupid artist. i'm glad this got shut down. banksy's dumb, empty, pseudo-political stencilings are way overrated already.
(thank you for letting me vent...)

hmmm...
he obviously had something more intelligent to say than the last poster...
but it's a shame it got shut down so quick, his work is usually quite well thought out.

I still can't believe the BBC said "heavy petting." Oh wait, they say that on "Coupling" pretty much every night.

Judging by the work on his website, Banksy's grafitti is about as well thought-out as scribbling anarchy symbols on one's highschool binder.

is a sample of some of the thought behind the work.
i can't believe some of you think this is thoughtless... the simplicity of the ideas and poetry of the translations are brilliant.

Any way to have links in the comments open new windows?

hmmm... i coded the link with target=_blank, but it didn't work.. guess just ye'old shift or openApple click

i saw a large installation by banksy in sydney a few months ago.
a beatup photocopier was painted pink (hello sylvie fleury) in front of what must be some of his *brilliant poetry* -- "i may not go down in history but i will go down on your girlfriend".
i suggest quitting 'art' and setting up a t-shirt store on st marks place.

I worked on the show production and I testify that his stencils, sculptures and paintings lose some of their effect in a staged environment. However, his stencils on the cows, pigs and sheep were very effective and original. I have an image gallery on my website: http://rawbeats.com/features/banksy.htm

thanks for the links Yeshen.
andre, evidentually the irony is lost on you. but thanks for venting with your highly informative comments.
i still believe that while banksy might not be the most prolific street artist, many of his pieces successfully translate an idea, and his work (gallery/street/web) disseminates these ideas quite well.

Why the hell have Central St Martins sent me a research list including Banksy? I havn't even started yet...amoung others Bob Marley, Patti Smith, can someone enlighted me?
....no actually I quite liked the exhibition despite the foul smelling animals, cute but smelly!

I'm not sure what someones definition of prolific is, he sure as hell painted most of "Shitditch" a merry colour.

The ideas are raw, simple and effective. Like he say's on his website, don't wait for the perfect stencil - it won't happen. Here is someone who is willing to fuck up in public, be original and people stand around like the east end loft dwellers they are calling it crap.

Then there are the Advertising execs and "new medjia" start ups that think he is cool, while he takes the piss out of them for their Central St Martins "ironic" post modern carbon copy artwank.

As the 70's kids show said, Y DON'T U - get off your arse and do something original!

With respect Eli and Andre, may be you two can get together and form a brain? But I rather think you will form a Brian.

>*brilliant poetry* -- "i may not go down in >history but i will go down on your girlfriend".
>i suggest quitting 'art' and setting up a t-shirt >store on st marks place.

ignorant. i don't suggest anything

how can someone say banksy is a stupid artist? ok fair enough, he painted some animals, and some hippies came past and wanted to get noticed (fair enough, it was a bit out of order on the animals) but when have you ever seen anythin like that before?? before you can judge banksy on his 'art', go and see the tate modern and have a look at that.. er.. so called 'art' ...

banksy is cool and hope he keeps up the good work.

banksys skills are really just marketing and generally taking the piss. a lot of what he does is just vague combinations of images left ambiguous so that people read their own meanings into them and hence think they are deeper than they really are. the problem that people really have with him is that he has taken a proto-political stance which is completely fake. playing at being ironic and ducking any moral responsibility or real longterm goals apart from being paid is all well and good, but he is clearly running out of time on that game. i hope for his sake he doesn't go out like kennedy, because some people truely are getting that sick of him.

Banksy has done virtually no street work at all compared to some1 like Shepherd Fairy or any true graffiti people. he cant even use a can, he admits it. He just throws it all at the media and makes it look like more that it is. It publicity stunts not art.

I love Banksy, particularly his polished outlook on life and the spring time fresh Mr. Sheen that glosses over the dark details of ICT lessons.

banksy is emerging is a leading conceptual artist, with an approach similar to tony kayes in the mid 90's. yes his ideas are simple, ironic and personal but why is this a bad thing? he's expressing himself publicly and keeping it real. so what if he did blurs album cover! maybe he's a fan. have any of you heard of "the first things first manifesto 2000"? his stencilled style and anti-establishment attitudes is seen as "cool" and therefore will become popular with the likes of nike and his style will be appropriated left right and centre but thats not his fault, he hasn't sold out....yet
will his work have longevity?
i think banksys work has more merit than damien hirsts one liners such as "the physical impossibillity of death in the mind of someone living"
if you don't tink there's any value in the art in tate modern-get educated, or just get a bain.
