Going to the Garden

A Bloody Mary with celery: Josh is thrilledThe Observer goes to check out the scene at the Chelsea Olive Garden four months after we do. Coincidence? We think not.

Okay, probably writer Gabriel Sherman was influenced by last month's Times article a month ago and all his friends who work in Chelsea and go there for the unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks lunch, but he remarks upon two of our findings: The cocktails and the high potential for hipsters going there to be subversive.

Gothamist's landmark trip to the Olive Garden. Landmark meaning "We spent nearly $300 for irony's sake."

Okay, Jen. You know lunch at OG was my thing. Unfortunately the turn-over is so high, no one recognizes my co-workers and I as regulars (except for that one host). I want to be Norm of the Olive Garden!!!

Damn. I was just kidding about Outback Steakhouse, but it turns out there's one at 60 W. 23rd. Who knew? Go to http://www.outback.com/menu/ for their menu and a list of their cheesey specialty drinks.

Good god, no . . . no amaretto!

  • Jen

We could order all these terrible cocktails - all the signature cocktails have amaretto in them ... it might have to happen...

  • HA!! I love it. We storm Olive Garden with a hundred or so friends and see them squirm to find a table big enough.

Interesting idea Glenn! Actually, Gothamist and 601am are currently brainstorming the venue for our next Happy Hour...

  • Glenn

If Outback Steakhouse opens a joint in Soho, I hope you throw a Gothamist party there.

Which reminds me, I saw John Madden's gaudy Outback-sponsored bus parked in front of some hotel on W. 23rd last month. (Double-parked? Triple-parked?) That thing is quite the eyesore.

Good idea for a rainy day post.

i think the ironic visit to the chelsea olive garden will one day become one of the stops along the "twelve stations of early third millenial hipsterism", like the twelve stations of the cross with jesus. youknowwhatimean?

Irony, even if thirst-quenching, is not cheap these days . . . $3.3 billion market cap parent company Darden Restaurants probably should thank you for your patronage. Or at least give you a coupon for 10% off your next visit.
