Summer of Skeeters

MosquitoThe torrential rain we somehow managed through earlier will probably give us a mosquito- and motley-of-other-insects- filled summer. The city is naturally worried about West Nile but at present, there haven't been any cases, though the Health Department is trying to exterminate as many larvae as possible.

The American Mosquito Control Association: Individuals enhancing the health and quality of life through the suppression o mosquitoes, other vectors and pests of public importance.

Gizmodo is skeptical of whether a cellphone can actually repel mosquitos but, hey, anything to make you feel better, right? Gothamist was actually told that taking a B-complex vitamin is helpful, as you'll emit something the mosquitos don't like. And some say Bounce dryer sheets work.

As if the thought of someone traipsing through the woods with a sheet of Bounce looped around a belt isn't amusing enough:

"Clean baked-on foods ... Put a [Bounce] sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan while the fabric-softening agents soften the baked-on food."

Making the next logical step, I'll be using Bounce as a meat tenderizer.

I've been ravaged by mosquitos this summer. I even seem to accumulate bites inside my office, which is even weirder because our windows don't open.
