Abercrombie & Fitch Makes Its Employees...Wears Its Clothes

Funny, we don't see any clothes hereAbercrombie & Fitch had been forcing their employees at retail locations to wear its clothing, and yesterday, they agreed to pay $2.2 million in damages to employees for violating California law. The chief counsel for California's Division of Labor Standards Enforcement said, "Virtually every worker we spoke to informed us that their store manager, their supervisors had been requiring them to wear Abercrombie clothing, and in fact the clothing had to be current with what was being sold that season," while Abercrombie said it had only "encouraged" the staff to purchase A&F clothing with staff discounts. Gothamist applauds the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement for stopping futher perpetration of A&F clothing, but wishes it could expand its reach to America's youth. (Readers, relax, we're not saying "Stop the homoerotic photo shoots.")

This makes Gothamist think back to one company dress code that lasted about two days, in an effort to "manage" the employees. And look less dirty in the elevator, compared to floormates J. Crew.

how do i get the A&F modls application?

  • Drea

I am an african american and I LOVE A&F clothing. I love HOLLISTER clothing, but I cannot honestly say that I feel welcome when I enter the stores. In fact, I feel downright uncomfortable because I feel so commpletely out of place. I think that's where A&F goes wrong. For a long time they have blatantly disregarded the minority market and as a result, those of us who really do like their clothes and style, stop shopping there because we feel uncomfortable going in the store. Not only does no one look like us that works there, but no one plastered up on the walls looks like us either.

Quite frankly, I'm glad they got slapped with a lawsuit, but its unfortunate that they only time they realize what they're doing is when someone hits them in their pocket. I used to want to work there when i was in college, but I never did because as time went on i started to feel more and more uncomfortable entering the store.

The most important figure to think about is not just with Abercrombie or other retail stores, it is with all businesses who have young high school and college kids working there. The fact is the pay is outrageous. What are you supposed ot do with $4 an hour restaurants ay their waitresses and $5 that abercrombie ays their employees. No matter what you are robably spend money at their stores anyway just to fit in with the look for the season. So once you subtgract how much money you spend with them you basically come out about even as if you weren't working there maybe leaving with an outdated shirt in your posession. In my opinion, how much you pay someone to work, thats how much work you will get out of a person. People have to sto retending like the have the best jobs in the world and actuallys tand up to these huge companies whith huge profits. The bottom line is not if you don't like abercrombie or hollister but the bottom line is these companies do not respect their emloyees..that is so simple to see. wow abercrombie offers 50% off of their $100 shirt. Who would pay $100 for a 100% cotton shirt. This company has become rediculous and it makes me sick to see that kids my age are not respected.

i work at hollister. i don't think they are racist. my store manager is african american and two of my assitant manangers are asian. i think it also depends on where you live. some areas of the country are more diverse than others, like the midwest is mostly white while california is very diverse compared to the mid west.

i don't think that it is a problem that they only hire good looking people. BRAND REPRESENTATIVE...it means that you represent the brand. if you had your own brand would you want people who didn't look good in your clothes representing your brand?? i'm not saying that you have to be gorgegous, but you just have to have the classic, good looking, clean cut look. if someone applied to hot topic who only wore abercrombie and hollister, they most likely wouldn't get the job because they wouldn't fit in with the style of the store. clothing stores like abercrombie and hollister are selling an image. why would they hire anyone who didn't represent the look the were going for??

at my store we don't have to wear only hollister clothes we can wear other brands that have the same style as hollister. and the clothes do NOT have to be current. i mean, logically you are not going to wear short shorts and a little tank top in january, but for the most part, it doesn't have to be current. if you worked at target you would have to wear khaki bottoms and a red shirt. MOST PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT HAVE DRESS CODES!!

the bottom line is, if you don't like abercrombie and hollister don't shop there.

I HATE A&F!!! I think that we should put all the A&F followers on an island far far away and put one of the latest A&F shirts on the island and watch the fun.If we're lucky, they'll kill each other. And then e should bomb the island, just to make sure that there arn't any more.I realy hate A&F because it makes followers out of individuals (which is oh so totaly wrong)But this is just my opion...A&F sucks ass!!!!!

Hey...I just went to an Abercrombie & Fitch interview yesterday and I was wondering if I'll get the job. I was wearing flat flip flops, a mini skirt, and a cute white top. Everything I was wearing was from Abercrombie & Fitch and was current and I am good looking. So I was wondering if the workers that posted a comment will think if I got the job or not. Thanks and God bless!

Recently, I went to Tuttle crossing mall's hollister and the general manager came up to me and asked if I needed a job. I thought it was kinda strange but I am assuming both stores AF and hollister do require a certain look to be an employee. I see more of a diverse racial mix at AF here in Ohio than in hollister stores. It was a surprise that hollister had approached me since I am asian american. I shop at both stores AF and hollister. I also walked into the AF store there and asked for an application. I also spoke with the hiring manager there too. She was very friendly, but may have since I was wearing all current abercrombie wear including flip flops *laughs* or maybe she thought I had what it took to be an employee. I dont think AF is racist but I think since it typically is a white brand they want someone who is attractive, laid back, preppy and some what looks white.

  • Kim

I was hird as a brand rep at AF and at my store in CA we do not have to wear the clothes. You can wear anything except something with another stores logo on it. And i dont find racism in the store i work at. When i went into work today, i was the only white brand rep out of the five of us that shared the shift.

  • Michael

I just want to say for all the ppl out there that dont like AF....go f*** yourself.you are just jealous because you cant work there.have you noticed whenever you walk into a clothing store (no matter what store) they look like they are wearing the clothes from there.so why does everyone hate on AF becuase they have guidelines for there brand reps?im sure gap doesnt want ppl working there thatdress like they came from hot topic...and vice-versa.so its just comon curtisy ppl,get a life. Also there is nothing sexual or discriminating about AF.they have plenty of different races in the store as well as the quarterly.so stop trying to start some shit and go shop some where else if you dont like it.

    Hey everyone!

I just asked for an application for a job at A&F and they just told me to come back after 4 on the following Tuesday. She took my name, but never gave me an application. This just seemed odd. She didnt mention any type of group interview. I was just basically wanting a part-time job. Does A&F work with you about getting some weekends or night off pretty easily?

What are some good questions to ask them on Tuesday?

  • drea

I was hired at Hollister and have decided to quit.

I am ashamed to work in a store where discrimination takes place. On my first day, I was talking to one of the other employees, she explained to me that it was "cool" to work on the floor because only the people that were not good-looking worked in the back. Maybe it is just a coincedence that the people working in the back are obvious hispanics. She told me this laughing, as if it was no big deal. She also told me that she had given an application to a person with a heavy frame and was afraid the manager would get mad at her, seeing as how she had been told not to hire heavy people, or people that did not have the "hollister image". I was disgusted, and instantly ashamed of working for a company that just contributes to that kind of discrimination. All you people say that they don't discriminate against blacks, hispanics, and asians, but not being hired because your over-weight, or not "good-looking" enough, IS discrimination. I realize that racism is not a factor at all these stores. But it is currently happening in the one i was hired at. People should not be hired/fired based on looks, simple as that.

  • Jenn

Hi, I'm an Asian-American female and I love wearing Hollister and A&F clothing. When I was shopping today, I asked for an application...I wanna work there so I could get discounts and it seems fun. I have another job that pays much better so this would be just a side job for fun. They told me to come in this Tuesday for a group interview. I am kinda nervous about this because I don't know what to do/say/act like. What kind of questions will they ask me? And what should I ask them? How long does the interview usually last and do they pick the people they want at the end of it in front of everyone?? I'm afraid I won't get picked and yeahh..gimme some advice! Thanks!

  • Freddy B

Hey whats up...i just got hired at Hollister also...its a great place to work...i like the fact that i feel like im hanging out with friends with some good music to sing to as i make my way around the floor, not too mention its a great place to meet people and not feel like your in the "norm"

  • Ashley

    Umm Okay Nicole.

  • nicole

i don't shop at abercrombie anymore. i love their clothes and their style but whenever i enter the store i feel concious aboout asking for something as simple as a fitting room because all of the other 'all-american' girls stare at me like im a freak or something. same at hollister. the cashier people give me attitude. this girl in front of me who was this perfect blonde-hair blue eyed girl , was really nice and stuff but i hated how the male all-american blonde hair and blu eyes as well cashier gave her a lot of respect and smiled and asked her to have a nice day, offered her a club cali card (turns out she has one), and aksed her to return to the store. my conversation with the cashier went like this.

    'hi..'

    'hi...'

'your purchase is 45.28 cash or credit?'

    'credit'

    'sign here please...thanks...here's your receipt'

talk about mood change. i feel subjected to racism because i am a minority. sometimes, people only think about racism against african americans. its not my fault i was made this way. why punish me for it? as for ashley, you sound extremely mad at the asian community. please keep in mind there are some exceptions, and try not to generalize such a term.

  • AFBrandRep

To a previous comment a bit a ways up... the reason you did not get a raise after a year is because you have to have worked so many hours during that year to get your raise. Also if you haven't gotten offered a promo at AF its probably because they don't think you'd be right for the position as a manager. As for everyone else saying AF is racist and their clothes are shit and they will get shut down and blah blah... get over it... they aren't racist. I have worked there for a few years (long before any racial lawsuits) now and I have worked with ALL KINDS of different ethnicities. I love the AF atmosphere and I love the clothes, which is mainly the reason I work there. Yes, they do encourage you to wear their clothing, as does EVERY OTHER mall store you work at. It just makes the store look stupid if a Brand Rep walks in wearing American Eagle when they're there to represent AF. You don't have to wear all new floor set either... the only time you should be wearing the new floor set is if the DM is visiting the store, which is like once a month. And that totally makes sense... the DM is there to make sure that everything looks good.. they want their stores represented well. And yes, it is true that they require a certain "look" for you to get hired... that doesn't mean just white people. I know many black people, asian people, and hispanic people who have the look and have gotten hired. If you're some person who never wears AF (i.e. if you are gothic or just have a totally different style all together) then of course the managers or whoever else is recruiting wouldn't hire you. All you people need to relax, AF runs their store the way that they like it to be run. A lot of other stores run it their own way also. I love AF clothes and I love working at AF so everybody really needs to stop complaining because the stores won't get shut down. AF is here to stay.

  • shirly

hey y'all. I work at hollister and if anyone is planning on applying there I have some tips. I was talkin to my boss about what they look for when hiring new people...here's what he said

-I would never hire anyone who doesn't ask a question

-I hire people who I think I will have fun working with

-I wont hire someone who isnt friendly and outgoing because I want them to enjoy their job

    picky stuff-

dont wear much makeup at all!

    wear FLAT flip flops

    keep your nails short

    smile alot

    dont wear black clothes

only wear HCO or AF jewelry

    BE CUTE!!

    **So....be cool, good luck!!

  • Chillin'

Guys and Gals it is so great you feel so good about yourselves. Confidence kicks ass... Have you ever heard too much of something is not always good. We all are young and lucky that we live in a country that we can be whiney little bitches (myself included) and not be punished. Step out of the box. Try thinking about others instead of how your hair looks. C'mon. Hey! Don't forget to vote!!

  • Ashley

I think what people are saying about Abercrombie and Fitch is like just bullsh*t. I'm an Asian American and I shop there like every freaking week...and they like never freaking give me a problem there. The workers there are nice people. People talk so much crap about me just because I wear their clothes...and it's like dude I'm not going to wear anything else so shut up. They think I'm a disgrace to the world just because I only wear Abercrombie and Fitch...everyone gives me a hard time about it too! It's like so freaking dumb. I know some people who are like "Eww I hate Abercrombie and Fitch" but they end up shopping there. People who make fun of me (because I wear their clothes) end up buying the same clothes as me a few months later. They even try to get the same look I have. Now who's STUPID now? Well a lot of people I sure know of. A year ago, I found out they sold a shirt about Asians...and all the Asians made it such a big deal but guess what? Everytime I go shopping at Abercrombie...which is often...I like see Asians shopping at Abercrombie and Fitch too. First of all...you say they are freaking racist but then you buy their clothes? That's like totally dumb. Oh and like by the way...who cares if Abercrombie and Fitch makes their workers wear their clothes. I mean who would want to go in that store and see workers there wearing Gap or Limited Too? All of yall should give Abercrombie and Fitch a break...which means GET OVER IT!

  • Rachi

You get the associate discount which is 30% as soon as you are hired and have gone to the orientation (filled out all the paper work). At the beginning of each season you get 50% discounts on 3 pieces of clothing. The managers definitely encourage you to wear AF clothing but according to the handbook you are only required to wear clothing that has the AF look. I don't always wear an "all abercrombie" outfit to work. I definitely think the managers hire based on looks but you have to be a happy, upbeat person with a good personality as well! I work with ppl of all different races so all of you who say that AF discriminates, you're probably just jealous that you didn't look good enough to get hired there! My job title is a brand rep... so when I'm working, I'm advertising the brand of AF... so of course I would need to have the look they want. No retail store that you walk in has posters of ugly ppl on their walls! And ppl that are models are always good looking because the brand wants their clothes to be on good looking ppl!!!

  • angela

Hey thanks for the reply! Basically all I'm looking for is the discount because I am planning on moving and want to take some more clothes with me. Do you get the discount as soon as you get hired? How does it work, and how much?

  • Courtney

hey i used to work at hollister in the sun valley mall in concord and i loved it. Yah I think they hired based on how you look...but you also have to have some kind of personality, one of the managers came up and talked to me and asked me a little bit about myself before asking if i wanted a job there... in your interview they ask you just random questions about yourself to see what kind of person you are(ex: most embarrasing moment, fav. bands, etc.), they want their employees to be energetic, sing along with the music and portray a "party atmosphere" to their customers, thats why the music is so dang loud, haha I worked with black, asian, latino as well as white...so ya i def. agree its not racists but look-ist...they hire A LOT of people though so you don't see many hours, but they do tell u that it's not a job to pay your rent with(mini. wage), its just basically a fun place to chill and get some discounts on the clothes u already like to wear...so ya if u wanna work at hollister or abercrombie i suggest having another job to go along with it. I only quit because I live a half an hour away and i didnt like driving so far all the time! It's a fun job tho, the managers are hella laid back and totally cool...

  • Benjamin

I am a manager for A&F in concord, sunvalley mall. I am just your typical black blue eyed african american. i think AF is not racist. it is 100% looks.

  • angela

Well well, I just got done reading a lot of the posts, and I am supposed to go to an interview tomorrow, or group whatever. Tell me whats up with this place, how much is the pay and about this pretty stuff?

  • SAEKell

be yourself, and wear chill clothing. In the end it doesn't matter what you have on, but don't go all dressed up, just for the simple fact that it is unessential for getting a job there. Have fun, and be yourself.

  • TheWorldsGreatest003

Dude...you should wear whatever the fuck you want...Fuck what they want to do...If they are all american then they dont care.

  • Kayleigh

Hey i was in abercrombie today and i was approached and asked if i had a summer job, and if id like one at the store, i was given an application and told to bring it back the next day, how do i know if im gonna get the job, and what should i wear, abercrombie clothes???

  • kristin

oops i just posted that tooo many times sorry!

  • Kristin

Hey i just got a job at Hollister yesterday (its a new store and it opens today) I walked in there with my app. and said that i was coming for an interview. The guys didnt even look at my app. unitl 10 min. into me filling out the job hiring forms. It was awesome (no dirty work) but i thought it was kinda wierd how they didnt ask me a thing! oh well! but what i was wondering for the people that do work at hollister is in the Hollister Handbook they say we are not required to wear there clothes but must wear something that is of the "hollister style" which im totally cool with, i love there clothes, but i have a skirt from rampage that looks like hollister clothing i was wondering if that was ok? i didnt know if they just said that stuff in the handbook to be kosher adn it really is not cool to wear it. i just dotn want to look ignorant and ask. And also if someone doesnt mind to tell me how much usuall startying pay for a brand rep is. they never told me and i dont want to look like a greedy person! Thanks!

  • keisha

I just wanted to say that my best friend that works at abercrombie told me flat out that the abercrombie companies would have group interviews and they will go down the line and pick out the people that they think are pretty enough to work there. Also on the un informed idiots writing about black owned companies like Sean Jean and Roca Wear not havig white employees and that bull. That just shows you how dumb they are. FOr your information SEan Jean and Roca both have people from every nantionality on the posters in their offices and on their runways. I think people that are saying stupid stuff like this are just trying to find false reasons to justify the unfair tactics abercrombie uses to employe associates and in the end it will be a huge price to pay by them. Come on i mean if thier own associates and managers are be used in these lawsuits agianst them, white, blk, cuban or whatever race they were that pretty much speaks the truth.

  • SAEKell

Well, I work at an Abercrombie and I am African American, or as I prefer to say, Black. I do not feel that they discriminate based upon color, but looks. Either you have the look or you don't. The only people that are bothered are those who do not fit the look (for the most part). I am only 5'7, so why would I try to be a runway model? EXACTLY, I wouldn't, and I shouldn't, its not the look. I think people get to worked up over nothing. Abercrombie is a cool company that is flexible and fun. I have even met the president, and he was cool to me. I am short, and black, and I get day shifts all day long. Also, the company hires brand reps, not sales associates, thus it is our duty to be a walking advertisement. I could go on for days, so I will sum it up with this...GET OVER IT!

  • what up herd..

Do you know that there are much better jobs out there? I mean it is so cool to get dicounts on clothes, but don't expect it to make rent and or support you in anyway. If you are good looking person work somewhere where your looks can benifit you. Be different. Abercrombie is nothing to be so stressed about. You all can do so much better! Strive for greatness!!! LOOKS ARE NOT EVERYTHING.

  • A&F made me wait for an hour for nothing! WHAT THE FUCK?! I go in there, asks the manager if he is the manager. He doesn't say anything and just asks to look at my application (checking out what i'm applying for). He said he doesn't know if they're having the 'group meeting' he asks one of the employees if there is a meeting being held, they said they didn't know. So they told me to wait at the couch in front of the register counter. I sit there waiting for some one to approach me. But the FUCKING MANAGER and any other employee just walks by me like I'm not there! OH HELL NO! By that hour, I ask an employee where their store manager is. The employee points out the store manager. I ask him the one with the white shirt? He says yeah. I was thinking to myself...you bitch. You fucking white preppy cocky shit! How can you treat a potential employee like that? Like myself?! Being ignored there for an hour, I know, no one would of approached me if I did not get up and talk to any one. Then I finally talked to the fucking manager, told him I was waiting there for an hour already. He talks all crap to me, explaining this and explaining that. Telling me the floor is full and that the only available time is from 9PM to 11PM?!!! WHAT THE? He should of told me that the first minute I walked in the store when he read my application. THIS IS PURE DISCRIMINATION DAMN BASTARDS! I am latino and I do have a good "look" and there was only ONE hispanic male I saw in there. To be honest with you all, I believe and I KNOW, I looked WAY better than that dude! This is BULLSHIT! 15 or so white people walking around fixing clothes and one hispanic and black male. If you don't like my "image" then say so or say that you're not having any interviews! It's all good because I am going to start doing some thing about this discrimination shit. They greet you nicely when you enter the store knowing you're a customer, but once u ask for an application or you showed up for an interview and NOT WHITE, the ENTIRE SITUATION CHANGES! CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!

Anyone out there who is planning on applying or trying to get a job there. Be sure about your decision. I did make sure of my decision, I chose to apply there because you will never know what will happen if you never tried anything. "Better to regret some thing you did, than some thing you didn't do." Goodluck!

  • Jay

Hollister is weird, called them up and said to just wait a few more days. The other manager says we don't like getting calls about this. Some stores just don't like u calling them, so just wait and see! If not, apply again ppl! Just a tip. Anyways, I went to A&F today and told me to come into their group meeting w/my application tomorrow!. =)

*Hey Shawn, you should ALWAYS turn it in to the manager, with any type of job. 'Cuz if u just give it to the employee, they'll just say oh some one turned in an application today. So it will help u more if u do turn it to the manager in person.

*Feel free to email me at: COED_ONLINE@Hotmail.com for any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks!

  • Shawn

^Yeah, I just turned in an application and never heard anything again I think the employee just tossed it. It was weird

  • Mark

Jay, you should call in and ask how their interview process goes, because as far as I know, Hollister only accepts applications on Wednesdays, where you'll participate in a sit-down group interview. They shouldn't have just taken your application like that. I would call and talk to a manager if I were you...Then again, it might be different where you are, but I highly doubt it.

  • jay

I just submitted my application for Hollister Co. yesterday, how long do I get a call from them? should I call them 3 days later to update and ask if my application has been looked on by the manager? Thanks! =)

  • Mark

I'm going to a group meeting wednesday to try and get a job. I didn't get scouted or anything. Could someone that works at A&F or Hollister message me on AIM and tell me if I look like I could get a job. I'm real self concious...AIM name is: HoLLisTeR GuY 59

  • bentley

i did get the job and have been working for a while. it is a blast. i have so much fun and the people do not seem stuck up, but i work in the kids store. It is totally opposite in the adult store. they are right, try to just be outgoing and have the all-american look. not too much make-up and bright colors. look like you spent time getting ready, but not like you are totally vain.

  • Hey Brooke

    Hey there Brooke,

I also work in AF. They typically like the "natural" look. No black eye makeup and no bright nail polishes. REally you don't have to worry if they already scouted you. I also can tell you that I worked in 2 different stores and BOTH said we *DID NOT* have to wear current clothing, it doesnt even have to be AF as long as it doesnt clearly have another stores logo. Although the idea is that if you want to work there, you obviously will buy the clothes. Also be very talkitive and friendly. I do agree it is not AF thats "snotty" it all depends on the area you work in. Everyone knows that theres always "that town" with the snotty kids...the middle class etc. Too be honest the first AF I worked in was full of BITCHES with all capital letters! But the second I felt right at home (i was orignally scouted at school by this one but it was far from my house).

Feel free to email me if you like!

  • Brooke

Hey, I just thought since there were a lot of AF employees here, you guys could answer a question for me. I am going on my first group interview, and I know I have to wear current clothing, but what kind of makeup/hair am I supposed to do? Thanks.

  • Devin

Hello. I am one of abercrombie's few african amercian models.(you can see me at abercrombiekids.com) Before i started working for them i didn't wear clothes like that but now thats pretty much all i wear now. Abercrombie is not rasict, its lookist. Even though very few black models try out, and very few get picked(like me) the ones that do get picked tend to have light brown hair and blue eyes(like me) so you just have to be blessed by god(like me) and look good(like me) and they don't pay much either.

  • af employee

I work at Abercrombie and I completly see where people are coming from. We are told only to "recruit" abercrombie types- typically white attractive male and females. When a not so good looking girl or boy comes in looking for an application we are suddenly only accepting applications and no longer hiring. When ten minutes later an All american hottie will come in and now we're hiring again..interesting .

Bentley, did you get your job?

  • Yo

I was recently hired as an assistant manager at A&F. They aren't racist, so much as they are discriminant.

They discriminate based on the way you look, but not on skin color. Its the "cool" look. My manager is pushing us to recruit, and she keeps getting on us to recruit "cool, beautiful people". Not white, but people that have that "cool" look. Racist, no. Discriminatory? Damn straight. Criminal - you better believe it. The bottom line is that the law states that you cannot discriminate based on how someone looks. A&F is doing just that.

I recruited 2 people yesterday and the only thing my manager wanted to know was whether or not they were attractive. Not what their qualifications were, not if they were upbeat, but whether or not they were good looking. The general manager was in the store earlier that morning, and was blaming our lower than average sales figures on that the last few times he had been in the store, he hadn't seen enough "beautiful, cool looking kids". He wanted us to get onto the local college campus and hit the cool spots and recruit only good looking people.

Abercrombie does have a look they are going after - they call it "all american". I call it bull shit. I'm planning on working long enough to recoup the $$ I spent on my work attire, and then quitting. A&F won't get anything else out of me. I'm disgusted to be working for a company that discriminates based soley on a person's appearance.

  • bentley

so should i just wear my abercormbie jeans and a sweater? is that okay or should i dress in interview attire for the group interview??

  • Charli

I work at Hollister Co. which is owned by Abercrombie and Fitch. It is pretty much the same type of store, with the "preppy" look for young adults, but the layout of the store and the style of the clothes can have more of a "beachy" look. I got my job there the same way, I was shopping in the store and one of the people that worked there asked me if I wanted a job, and told me to come to the group interview. They told me I had the "look", and would probably get the job. I went into the interview thinking I wouldn't get the job, because there were quite a few people there, but I ended up getting the job after all. I later found out, that basically what the stores are looking for is an outgoing young adult, who knows how to keep up their appearance. They like their employees to come into work looking fresh and clean, and they want you to be friendly and very outgoing. When you go into your interview, just make sure that you are wearing clothes that reflect the store's style, be very outgoing and polite, ask questions, and most importantly, act like you are glad to be there. I'm pretty sure you will get your job, because it is a very good thing if they already told you that you were cute. Plus, they only approach people they would want to hire, so most likely get a job.

    good luck!!!

  • bentley

I was just in Abercrombie today with my friend and the manager came up to us and said that we should get a job there. She gave us applications and told us that we would probably get the job. We have to go to a "group meeting." For anyone who works there..can you tell me about this?? The manager said that i was cute so i should have no problem. Does this mean that i can be a brand rep or will i be stuck in the back??

  • FOXnFitch22

Alright everyone.. I'm a African American working at abercrombie kids because im 17 and i see no racism in our stores, when i turn 18 i will be working at Fitch. What i dont get is why do people work there if there not going to wear the clothes you work there so you can get discounts on clothing also i wanted to adress my people that are minoritys, rasim is only a problem if you let it get to you this world is racists i dont think you wouldnt be human if you wasnt racist thats just how it goes

  • I was shopping at A&F when I was apporached by two girls. They asked me to apply for a Job and I was like, "Totally." Basically they said I had the look and style of an A&F model (I did model professionally at one time) and would be great at pushing their brand.

At our division we have two blacks working, one being a supervisor. We treat no customers differently but we will only recuit attractive people to work the floor... others do get stuck in the back but can you blame us?

Would you join a health Gym that hired FAT personal trainers to help you get in shape?

  • To katleyn from Estaboy

I am trying to make people see that a stupid clothing store is not worth making a big deal about! But moron's, pardon my rudeness you will find out why i am a little upset very soon, like yourself, seem to think that it is. You believe all of the shit that they say, that is what's so sad. You take that, "All American Look" and belive that that's what it is. Well honestly girl, get a life, really. If you are so busy as to think that in this world of Presidents who do not win the popular vote, countires with nuclear weapons, and mass genocide etc. . . . that Abercrombie and Fitch is a big deal and that people need to constantly make a huge fuss over, then you do have a problem and you are the one that needs help. And for this racist crap that you pull, don't go blasting me as being racist, because i would like to know as to whom i am racist to, the white man perhaps? Yea Katlyn I am black, negro, colored whatever you may want to call it. I shop and work at the store and you know what, I love their clothes, I think its my style! But people like you are so ignorant as to say they are racist and do not listen to people as myself who are actully the ones who work there. And for your, "to stick my neck out for. . ." comment, both of my grandparents fought in WWII to help keep this country free from tyranny and devistation. But people like you are the people that they regret most for fighting for. People who think that a clothing store is bigger news then a murder, a clothing store is bigger news then a war, a clothing store is racist! Well they haven't been to me sir/mam. No they have not! So please do not, I say do not ever again tell me I am racist again. You little ignorant girl.

  • To EstaBoy

I personally think if you pull th "we are at war" card you need help buddy. You are truly very sad. The company itself gives a image of our great country, which you are so avid to stick your neck out for as concieted, racist little shits who only except " the perfect" image or as Abercrombie calls it...All American Look. Fuckin' A. You sir/mam have a lot to learn about life. Please, for god sakes, take all the other posting into account.

  • Roman

there is nothing better than Abercrombie

and its only for white people

  • Estaboy

Well since Hollister is being brought into this now, maybe you should know its owned by A&F. And for girls wearing miniskirts in the pouring rain? IS anyone forcing them to do this? Is there a binding contract between these underage girls and Hollister Company? Tell me, how do they force this upon these underage women? Curiously? Well they probably don't is the answer. And for the pouring rain again? The store is not outside, is it? Wait no its not. So you walk through the rain get a little wet and go into work, when i wear shorts sometimes i get wet. It sucks, but oh no, i deal with it. These girls probably wear it cause its what they want too, I dont think they have to wear shorts in the winter and if they did then maybe you would have something to talk about! Honestly get over these stores and shop elsewhere its not that big of a deal, especially since we are in a war and our soldiers are being killed everyday and for what? So maybe we should look at what really matters in our world, not clothing stores.

  • What about Hollister?

Now, A&F still sucks but, have you all heard about Hollister? It is the more affordable A&f look spin off. I have a few friends who work at that store. As many Brand reps know, You are supposed to buy the clothes that are the look of the season. Hollister has that too, it is to have the girls who are underage where mini, mini skirts and tiny tops. That is a requirement even in pouring rain! Just a little tid-bit for you all.

  • Ashton

Everybody lies and says they get there stuff from Abercrombie. Pls, most of its comes from walmart. Why, doesn't Abercrombie just sale stuff and on a sign they should put "Abercrombie and Fitch is tippicaly made for white people" instead of putting so many people in tormoil.

  • kristine

Abercrombie & Fitch is the best clothing line around! The designers made there cloths a certain way, and want them to have a certain look. Why doesn't everyone just get off of Abercrombie's ass and leave them alone. So many other clothing compaines do the exact same thing, but everyone only targets Anercrombie, because they have a "white" look. Go sue P. Diddy for making his clothing line the "black" look. Everyone just needs to grow up, if you don't like how they sell there cloths then don't go in there and buy them, go somewhere else.

  • BLk Boi

They're usually mean and give me dirty looks when I'm in there so I stop shopping there like a couple of monthes ago.

  • Chad

I've been reading some of these postings, and it seems like alot of people have problems with abercrombie. I have been a brand rep on and off for just under two years going back over my breaks from college. If you don't like the company don't shop there. It's as simple as that. There are so many other stores out there to shop at. Now I will admit the company may have some controversial hiring standards, but I don't think any of them are illegal. I think the experience one gets when shopping at abercrombie is unique, and that is why it's been sucessfull over the past few years. Bottom line leave the company alone, they're not bothering you.

  • Just got fired from a&f!!

I just got fired because of my hair cut and color!I used to have the "A&F" look long long and blond streaked crap!

So, I decided I wanted a change the day I went to work like normal and after that never, ever got sheduled! I went in a week later to talk to my manager (frat-fuck magoo),to see why. He said,"Your hours are like, ummm, like not good so we need to like totally get someone with more availablity". FUCK YOU! I hate your clothes anyway! My new haircut kicks ass! i don't think he got it.

(He just wanted another hand job from the pretty new blond brand rep.) ABERCROMBIE SUCKS!!!!

  • CaLiBaBiE

Well, of course it would seem plausible for the company to expect their employees to look good and dress nice because if they look good, their clothes look good. It's like what Avon and Mary Kay sellers do, they want you to trust that their clothing or makeup is top notch so to prove it to you; they'll model it for you. Even when working at a salon, you're expected to color and style your hair as well as your make-up and nails--with their products.

But my question from reading all this is, what ever happened to MANNEQUINS!! Think about it, you can make that shiet look as beautiful and as "classic white" as you want without getting sued. It's worked in the past, why fix it if it ain't broken? Even at the salon, there are pictures of extreme haircuts so you don't have to sacrifice you beloved long hair for the latest short haircut just because you're sales. Why should you have to sacrifice that minimum wage check for overpriced products? So what, they prefer to use those walking advertisement (seen in socal) over mannequins? You know, the ones on the street corners with those huge signs that they have to rotate and shake every few minutes. Maybe it's working because a lot of the employee have the psyche of A&F lifestyle, they think believe that the store is cool and by working there, they're cool too and they're willing to sacrifice the money for the "fun" and coolness of it all. It's incredible how these corporate were able to brainwash these teens and suppress their individuality by selling the image and lifestyle of "cool". It's just not these stores either, ever since hip-hop became popular and begins selling their bitches and ho lifestyle, every store at the mall seems to be selling an image of surfers/skaters/Goths and the list goes on. (Thanks J-Lo and Sean John! Thanks a lot!) ALL IN ALL, IT JUST SEEMS SO SHALLOW AND SUPERFICIAL TO HAVE TO PAY YOUR WAY TO FIT IN--ANYWHERE! BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENs WHEN YOU WORK AT OR BUY A&F.

Besides, the corporate do not see black, brown, white or even beauty; they only see green. A&F will eventually market their clothing to minors because soon minorities will become the majority and they will target whatever profits. They target the white because in the past and arguably the present, minorities have modeled their achievements after the American Dream of white picket fences and what not.

What bothers me most is as a college student, we're inching away from our parents to become induviduals and independant and to have a job such as A&F demeans the whole purpose of this because those still living on their parents wallets will never understand the meaning on living check by check. Instead, they're spending it on their lifestyle and keeping current with the latest. It's the hardship and struggles in life that makes us better as beings and working or shopping at superifical places like A&F won't help much.

  • Brand Rep

To reply to Reality Check: I couldn't agree with you more! I work at 3 different A&F's when I am home from college. The first one i worked at, the store manager specifically said during the, 'group interview' this will not be a job that pays your bills, but a job so that you can get a discount and have fun. And thats what it is. I work at 2 other stores now as well, because the people are awesome and the managers are way radical. I know that my $6-7.50 isn't going to go anywhere. And i personally don't care that i have to wear the clothes, well not anymore. But they do give us 50% 3 items a season. That saved me, $100. So in otherwords, the normal shopper would spend, $200, while i the employee spent $100. Thats why i work there. So if i worked another job i'd had to have spent $100 more to get the clothes i wanted. I work there cause i wear the clothes, if i wore, Tommy or FUBU, i'd work somewhere else. So i don't know what all the fuss is about. People just need to stop bitching and get lives.

  • Reality Check

For all of you that cant stop crying because you were "FORCED" to wear clothes from the store that you worked at, for god sakes get a tissue. You all knew what you were getting into when you took the job and if you didnt im pretty sure it wouldnt have been too hard to find another job paying the great sum of 6.00 an hour, and on this one you could look like a bum at. You could work at mcdonalds, at least you dont have to buy that uniform. And if you dont like that you can quit too. But come on, your gonna sue for having to wear the clothes from the department store that you work for, and your TITLE is a BRAND REP. So does this sound right, i thought not!

  • More A&F Employees

As my friend and I have both read these posts together, we have seen lots that we agree with and a hell of alot that we don't. Bottom line is this: A&F is a big giant steaming heap of racist shit. Period. When you have a company that is run by a bunch of young, white,ex-frat boys, the end result is...well, this. She and I have both been employed at A&F for over a year ourselves, both soon to be college grads. We have both been systematicaly overlooked for Management promotions time and time again, often for people that are new hires or have never even worked in retail before. Excuse after excuse. Being a manager requires one having a college degree or being in the last year or semester of school, but our DM for some reason is constantly hiring non-degreed white kids she thinks looks good. Moreover, once a person has been employed with the company for over 6 months, he or she is eligible for a raise. Now it ain't much, but those 50 pennies can make a difference when you're making peanuts to begin with. Now, for some strange reason, I've been there for a year and some days now, and yet to see those two quarters, although my white co-workers have... I got a weak ass excuse for that one, too. The simple shining fact is that our District Manager openly encourages the exclusive hiring of white people in management positions is damned disgusting. Those of you who "aren't racist,but..." who think that this is simply two minorities jumping on the bandwagon just to maybe make a buck, that's fine... I don't expecect you to understand. But just imagine... working your ass off, covering shifts day in and day out for others, and being an all around GOOOD employee, but at the end of the day, getting nothing more than a hard time... no raises...no respect- all because of your color.

  • New AF Worker

I just got hired at A&F, and I think it is true, Only attractive people will get hired. They are carefull as not to hire anyone who seems overweight or too far from the image that is cast in the posters and adds. A&F seems like a pretty well mixed environment from what I see, and the people are more than nice. Basicly, like anywhere else, its NOT the company, its the store or area you work in that will differ from others.

  • Another ANF Employee

Yes, due to the lawsuit we can turn in our personal employee log and claim it as tax deductible since it was required for work. This however will only work for any clothing purchases made BEFORE the new look policy went into effect.

As for ANF being racist, I wouldn't really know as I myself am Cuban, and have also seen black people get hired at the store as well. On top of that I've also seen black models on the walls. However, this has all started to happen recently with all the accusations of ANF being racist.

The ONLY thing that the company is guilty of is that they will only hire attractive people. I've seen my store hire hispanics, blacks, and asians alike, however they were all extremely good looking. This is due to the fact the the company thinks if customers see good looking people wearing the clothes they will buy the clothes in an effort to be good looking too.

  • Chris

They are fucking racist asholes at af, they will be stopped

  • This is only partially related to the post ... but people who have to claim "i'm not a rascist" ... come on. you know you are. Rascism still runs rampant in this country and it's always the people who live the farthest away from the people they're afraid of, knowing so little about that on which they speak. There is a such thing as a "classic white style" ... but it isn't abercrombie ... and the only reason it's both classic and white is because it's a holdover from a time where only white people were in a position to flaunt social class and it's subsequent style; they were too busy ensuring anyone a micro-shade darker couldn't.

  • A&F employee

Okay, so can we turn in our personal employee log and get some money back? Due to the lawsuit ? I have worked for A&F for over a yr now...what's up ? Someone give me the inside deal here please! I live in SoCal by the way.

  • Tina

I am an african-american from Boston and happen to wear Abercrombie clothing.I dont think it matters if the store requires employees to wear there merchandise.I thought that was the reason you actually got jobs at chain stores to get the discount on the clothing,But thats just my opinion.

Abercrombie clothing is comfortable but there is nothing classic about 60 dollar ripped jeans.

I also dont see anything american when I look in most of the label the state MADE IN somewhere other than the USA!

I see everyone jumpin on Sean John, but if you did a little research you would know there are white models on the runway.

Also if you get your facts straight all these african-american labels would not have came out to promote street style if TOMMY HILFIGER and many others werent so damn ignorant.

GO ahead with you white power, when you realize clothing does not make up a person, write another post!

  • "classic american"

On top of Abercrombie getting all of this s**t for making their employees wear their clothes, they're getting hit with all these civil lawsuits about how they only hire white folk. Notice how it only happens in California...the same state where illegal immigrants can get drivers licenses. If I were A&F I'd close all shops in Cali. Anywho, I just don't get how it can be pushed for equal representation for minorities, let's say in the media, for them to be able to turn on the TV and see someone of color whom they can relate with, but us "Classic-white" folk can't have a store where we can go to have a place where we can relate. That's part of the appeal of the clothing, to go into the store where there's all these gorgeous white people, wearing great clothes, in a unique fashionable style. If there were a bunch of coloreds, I wouldnt shop there anymore, that's what youd call Old Navy. No thanks! In my opinion, just leave them alone, and everyone else. Let them hire who they want to hire. When we go into job interviews, the first thing the employer notices is appearance. If I get discriminated against because of the way I choose to apply my makeup, because it doesnt look professional, how is that any different than them wanting to uphold or maintain a certain overall look for their company by hiring only a certain race. You dont see me complaining because Sean John or RocaWear only markets greasy coloreds do you? Who was the last white person that they hired or modeled to sell their clothes?

  • hotchick

i got hired at a&f at southdale here in edina mn and i got the baddest hours. i asked for day shifts on the weekends and when scheduling came. i was stuck in the stock room working my butt off cleaning and shiat starting at 4pm to 10pm at night. and thats the time when everyone is going home from the mall already. WTF?!!!! so i guess it is true about this company. discrimination is getting toooo old. why cant everyone just grow up and be equal. who cares about the color of our skin. i am proud to be an asian american and i wont let no one bring me down because im not white. i can still sell clothes, make money, and still be a wonderful employee to a&f. i should sue them too and get my moneys worth. shiat. im sure the people in the 3rd world country sowing all their god damn clothes feels me. getting paid 3 cents an hour. for shitty torn up clothing. no wonder why theyre soo stupid... and everyone hates them. i hope they do go out of business. they deserve it... a&f is just tooooo racist.

  • Nic

I've been working as a Brand Rep. at A&F for almost two years now and all I have ever heard about attire was to be current. I have listened to it over and over with sitting in on group interviews. If anyone ever came to work without current gear on then they were forced to decide to either buy new clothes and stay at work or be sent home. Especially when the district manager were to visit the store, current was a must! Now I was informed just last night (10.05.03) at work that the Look Policy has changed to where BRs can wear anything that either looks like A&F (w/o logo or label showing) or any out of season A&F clothing. The thing is that the Look Policy never changed, it's just the store, district, and regional managers will hold off with giving us the choice to buy or not to work. And isn't this uniform compensation law included in other states (besides California) or even nation wide. I live in Texas and one such law does exist but I don't know where to start in the process of any sort of compensation. If anyone has any advice please do not hesitate to email me at gudtymer@hotmail.com,

    Thanks

  • RNB

I've been working at the Gap for a few months and during my interview they informed us of these lawsuits and stated that they "could not make you wear their clothing" but you need to have "the Gap look." This is understandable - you're representing them, so that's fine. But when you are being paid $6.50 an hour and expected to buy new clothes every few weeks to stay current, problems set in. Yes, you can get away with not wearing Gap Brand... but it's highly discouraged and hard to walk through the store w/o managers & other employees constantly questioning & commenting on your attire. The discounts do help, but if they'd like to protect themselves from these ridiculous lawsuits, a uniform should be issued, and paid for by the company, like any other job.

  • Dolph

What in the world's wrong with the "all-White" look AF is getting sued over?! Does anyone honestly believe that Sean John is promoting anything other than a "black" look?!! But oh, no, no one is going to sue P Diddy for not "equalizing" society. Being a minority is supposed to be cool, but being white isn't? I'm not racist, but I don't like a double standard, either. If Sean John clothing promotes a "black" look or a "street" look, wonderful! But why should AF be criticized for promoting a "clean" or "white" or "traditional" look? I don't see the black or white community suing Asian or hispanic businesses for hiring mostly Asians or hispanics! If we aren't required in business to hire according to racial quotas, leave us alone. If we need quotas, fine--just mandate or laissez faire!

  • JJ

Why not let AF issue a "uniform" each season for a certain number of floor employees per season--one or two outfits of simple shirts and pants from that season's catalog? Sure be a lot cheaper than all the lawsuits they're going to face....

  • erin

ive worked for a few retail clothing places, and they almost always ask you to wear their clothes. at the gap, they want you to do this, or at least wear plain things that look like they could have come from their store. i guess it makes sense to a degree, you dont really want your sales people wearing logos for your competitors, but its lame how most of the people working these jobs [with the exception of the higher-ups, of course] are high school kids who battle to work 15 hours a week for minimum wage while the companies sit back and rake in the dough.

  • I also worked for JCrew in Atlanta. We had a 40% clothing discount, but could wear anything we wanted to---just your basic corporate retail dress code with casual Fridays thrown in for good measure.

  • Paris

I used to work for J.Crew and I never had to actually wear clothes from j.crew, they just had to look like I bought them there...BR and Gap passed the test. I've also hear from former A&F workers that you must wear the new clothes that are in the front, absolutly no sale items or last seasons stuff. So, you never really save money for working them since you are constantly buying more clothes.

  • Abercrombie

Comments like that one are why Fitch and I never really got along.

  • Fitch

It seems reasonable to want your salespeople to be wearing your clothes while on the floor. It would then seem logical to comp them for at least one outfit so it's not a "pay to work here" situation.

  • DodgeThis

I would have to send kids home all the time because the higher-ups made me do it!! I had to send a kid home because he was wearing J-Crew chinos instead of BR chinos. I am so glad I dont manage that store anymore!!

  • abe

A&F was also recently involved in a lawsuit brought by employees claiming that managers gave all of the floor sales positions to white folks.

  • jake

i heard the real beef with A&F was that they were overhiring- and using that to sell merch. Basically, they'd hire like five times too many college kids to work in the store, and then require them to buy like $500 worth of clothes, and then only assign them 5 or 10 hours of work per week. Result? You sell lots more clothes, with basically no downside, i mean, apart from the giant lawsuits they are going to get hit with in every state.

  • Jen

I thought that employees, while encouraged to where the store's clothing, could get away with plain t-shirt and pants, since most places sell that anyway.

  • DodgeThis

Way back in 1999 I used to be a manager at Banana Republic at Rock-Center and we were more than just encouraged to wear current BR clothes. If we did not we were sent home like the losers we were for working there in the first place. So im sure it wont stop A.F. from the practice because all the retailers do it.

  • bryan

That's pretty dumb, what do they expect A&F store personnel to wear, Sean John? If you don't want to wear A&F, don't work there, there's plenty of other mall stores you can work for. Its almost, but not quite like sueing macdonalds for making you fat.
