Supreme Court Upholds Affirmative Action

2003_6_supcrt.jpgThe Supreme Court has upheld affirmative action in a 5-4 ruling. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote in her decision: "In order to cultivate a set of leaders with legitimacy in the eyes of the citizenry, it is necessary that the path to leadership be visibly open to talented and qualified individuals of every race and ethnicity."

However, the court did strike down some quota systems based on points. The Washington Post says that court, for once, looks like America with this decision.

Columbia's president, Lee Bollinger, had been President of University of Michigan and was sued by students for upholding Michigan's affirmative action policy. (The law school affirmative action stands, undergraduate policy doesn't.) The decisions: Grutter vs. Bollinger and Gratz vs. Bollinger.

A year ago, an article appeared in the WSJ

saying that the daughter of the Democratic

Congresswoman of Manhattan Caroline Maloney was

admitted to Princeton with a SAT score of 1330.

This ridiculous white female proclaimed that her

high school Groton, prepared her for admission to

any college classroom in the world.

Her daughter was admitted to Princeton

and because her grandfather was an alumnus of Princeton

and because she was the daughter of

    the Democratic Congresswoman of Manhattan.

She had other classmates who were admitted to Harvard

    and other Ivies with

even lower SATs. A few weeks later, a kid named

Michael Hardenberger was featured in a US News

& World Report for having a SAT score of 1330

SAT. If a kid like Hardenberger from West Virginia

could get a SAT score of 1330. then every

coalpit-pocketed high school in West Virginia could

prepare you for any college classroom in the world.

How in God's nanme are Gothamites ( Manhattanites in this case )

are willing to elect a Congresswoman

who says something like that in the first place ?

Contrast this to the case of Chinese students from

Arcadia high school in Arcadia, California for the class of 2004.

There were 70 Chinese students from that

year's graduating class at Arcadia high school who scored above

1400 SAT who appplied to Berkeley. 48 of them were

    accepted and 22 were rejected.

There were 13 Chinese students from that class who applied to

Harvard with a score above 1400 SAT. Only 1 was accepted,

    he declined enrollment at Harvard.

Contrast this treatment to the daughter of

    Caroline Maloney. Contrast the

abominable treatment of Asian applicants to Harvard and other

Ivies with their treatment at Berkeley. Shame

is the only word that comes into mind.
