Slippery When Wet - Not What You Want From Your Subway Tile

2003_6_subwaytile.jpgSubway riders have been slipping from the new, imported tile installed at the 86th Street and Lexington subway station. The rain and wet have make the tiles more slippery: A passenger tells Newsday, "It's wet enough for somebody to go sliding right over the edge." Newsday also reports that the same tile will installed at a number of stations undergoing renovation, including Grand Central. Deirdre Parker, NYC Transit spokesperson says, the tile continues to be used in spite of accidents because "it's easier to clean, and maintain, and is more durable than, say, concrete or something."

Easiest way to make a million dollars: Sue the City of New York. I hope these tiles are installed at my frequented stations. I'll be sure to wear my three-year-old, balding flip-flops.

It's a good thing we don't have a lot of rainy days in NYC...
