With all the excitement about The Hulk opening tomorrow, Movie City News brought up this old FlakMag interview with Hulk producer, co-writer, and frequent Ang Lee collaborator, James Schamus. The December 2000 interview was about the screenwriting process for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but at the very end, Schamus mentions he and Lee were talking to Stephen Merritt about turning 69 Love Songs into a musical. How hot would that be? And does anyone know the status of this? Lee has wanted to do a musical for a while, Gothamist thought it perhaps might be a remake of Flower Drum Song.

Sort of off topic, but you'll appreciate.. TMBG launced a new "Clock Radio" function today.. Free streaming live songs and rarities, complete with a cartoon FDR!
Does anyone actually plan on seeing 'The Hulk'?
Me me me me me!
me too! (even though old professor schamus can be just a *tad* full of himself, *s)
Why? It looks terrible.
interested to see what ang will do with the superhero/comic book genre. he's applied--fairly successfully, i think--his directorial talents to a number of different kinds of films, which isn't something one sees very much. one of the few directors around with breadth, and one who doesn't seem to suffer from an auteur complex.
I think--I think--Mr. Merritt has been writing a musical with Daniel Handler for the last, oh, four-odd years. I never heard of it being a musicalized 69 Love Songs (wasn't the full performance of the set at Lincoln Center supposed to be the songs' final airing?)--although I do feel like it was an adaptation of something. 10 points for a spotty memory.
I have a friend in the Magnetic Fields who tells me that the Stephen / Ang Lee thing fell through, but that they are working on making a stage version of the awesome album. It's form is still in the works, but it seems like a great idea to me!
