A friend of mine I have known for years recently told me that for many years in the past the YMCA only allowed boys and men to swim in the pool while nude. He said that when they first built the swimming pools that they were worried about clothing particles clogging the filter and so established this universal rule to avoid that problem. It was interesting to me that although this practice was many years ago, at that time no one considered it a problem. My, my how times have changed. Are we more prudish today than we were in bygone years?

I really like the variety of comments posted in response to this article. Having never seen The Gothamist before and not residing in or around NY, I found you while searching for the latest news on this topic at Google. Jen: I think there is something to be said for teaching kids how to handle the feelings they begin having between ages 13 and 18. Sex ed. in today's schools simply reviews the mechanics of reproduction and disease prevention, but as far as I recall doesn't even mention unavoidable sexual stimulation, not being embarassed about the subject, and related social issues. Evil_inside: Contrary to popular myth (?) the idea of an all day "woodie" is, or should be, an Urban Legend of its own. Nudism and naturism try to teach that such a condition is a perfectly acceptable and generally passing thing, and that it should NOT be something to be embarassed by. More chatter among young men about "blue balls" and how dangerous they can be has happened then about the reality and normalcy or nighttime erections and spontaneous emissions. Premature experimentation with sexual intercourse out of simple curiosity used to be a major cause of pregnancy, and I suspect many young men were disappointed by their first experiences. Actually I think I heard something about nude swims that were conducted at Boy Scouts summer camps, although this practice may have occured in limited areas or not been widely publicized. What parent in their right mind would send their 13-18 year old to a nude camp? Even if the parents went along, how can this be a good idea. This is just asking for trouble. When I was in my teens, I couldn't watch an episode of Charlies Angles without popping a woodie. Can you imagine being naked and surrounded by naked women all day? Even if they are nasty, the fact that you are seeing naked women up close and personal and talking to them would cause the hormones to kick in. Are there camp counslers that "watch" over the teens? Where do I sign up? This idea sounds about as good as the nude slumber parties that we have been hearing about lately. What's next, nude Boyscouts retreats?

Maybe we're so uptight in our textile world, but there is something inherently sexy about a naked body and taking clothes off. Or keeping them on and swimming and then coming out of the lake at Pemberley looking hot during 1800s Jane Austen England. I'm just saying. Another thing about being a nudist: Do you really want to see your friend's parents naked? I mean, that's crazy.

i love how they talk about the "textile" world- it's like harry potter talking about the muggles. in fact, nude summer camp sounds a hell of a lot like hogwarts to me. if i had been sent to a nude summer camp at 13 (or hell, at 26), i'd definitely be in the slammer for something.
