Sex Change for Larry Wachowski?

Larry Wachowski discusses the Matrix; Photo - CNNLarry Wachowski at Cannes

Since it was in Page Six and The Smoking Gun, it's not new news that Larry Wachowski, half of the creative team behind The Matrix, has been having marital problems and is in a relationship with a dominatrix. The dominatrix's husband, Jake Miller, bitter over being left, guessed that Wachowski was wearing "bra and panties" under his suit at the premiere. Which then leads to speculation about Wachowski's sexuality/sexual issues.

Jeffrey Wells says he heard a rumor in March about how Wachowski wanted to live the rest of his life as a woman, but dismissed it. Then Wells was taken aback by the various reports:
- Jake Miller (apparently a transsexual);
- Wachowski's divorce papers that allude to his "dishonesty" in the marriage;
- Chicago Sun-Times columnist Bill Zwecker quoting a studio suit "Now I know why Larry paid so much attention during our costuming meetings";
- Time magazine article rolling up the same information but also adding a comment about the hat Wachowski wore to the Cannes premiere;
- And, finally, fellow movie journalist Dave Poland's column about the situation, in which Poland hems and haws about whether or not to write about it, finally writing, "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation."

Wells adds, "I don't think of myself as a bigot or a jerk, but I do feel turned around by the Larry thing. It's a creaky old sentiment, but whatever lights your fire is okay by me. It's just that I've always thought of filmmakers who are into martial-arts sequences and comic-book inspirations and Japanimation as...I don't know, a little bit geeky and dorky in a kind of routinely male, vaguely grungy, non-glammy sort of way. And I don't know where to put the Larry thing. It doesn't seem to fit...

One final thought: in every photo I've ever seen of Larry Wachowski, and in the interview footage he submitted to (along with his brother, Andy) for the MATRIX REVISITED DVD, he's always seemed somber and vaguely pained -- half-frowning in a thoughtful, weight-of-the-world, heavy-cat sort of way. But he appears to be sailing on some kind of euphoric high in that TIME magazine photo. He looks happy. That should count for something."

Wells and Poland are quick to defend Wachowski's decision as well as point out that if this is true, then Wachowski is very vulnerable, undergoing a hugely difficult self-examination. Which means that they (noted admireres of Matrix: Revolutions) are trying to tell their readers not to be judgemental jerks, logically expecting part of their reader audience to be horrified.

Gothamist is intrigued by this information, both as rumor-turned-possible-truth and as an example of something that people don't tend to talk or think about being brought to the fore because a celebrity is involved, but beyond that, and wondering like others what Larry Wachowski might change his name to (Lara? Laraine? Laura? Lori?), the evidence has to do the talking for now. We already noted how the Matrix films could be read with a whole new subtext with the news of the dominatrix in Wachowski's life.

    I hope women view these stories with less tough judgment than men. I have always felt that I was born a gay man in a woman's body. I love smooth skin and sex but when a woman tries to make love to me, I feel totally unfulfilled. If Larry becomes Lana Wachowski, they can't change his birth certificate from being born male to being born female, can they? It won't make any difference to me either way. I love the films these people make. They would do well to help some of our people to make it big in the entertainment industry. "Our people" being Native North American Indians. They don't make such a big deal out of transgendered people. PrincessPrecociousOne Dual Citizen...not Canadian nor American!

    I care more about the fact that the Wachowski brothers are being sued for copyright infringement for THE MATRIX. Has anyone else heard about this lawsuit. Supposedly, the same woman that wrote THE MATRIX is also responsible for TERMINATOR and she can prove it. If she wins she gets 3X the GROSS PROFIT for both franchises.

    2 things I want to say:

    If one of the Wachowski brothers did get a sex change, then why was "V for Vendetta's credits saying "directed by the Wachowski Brothers" just like in the Matrix movies that were made before this news came out?

    fatmouse's comment about schizophrenia bothers me because he referenced multiple personalities. Schizophrenia does not mean you have multiple personalities -- multiple personality disorder (or just "being a multiple") means you have split personalities. It's nitpicking and it's irrelevant I know, and I'm sorry, but I had to get it out.

  • Your article make interes to the problem.s

    "gender dysphoria is real"

    Schitzophrenia is real, that doesn't mean you deal with it by getting each of your personalities their own drivers license.

    Damn gonad-choppin' loonies.

    If you are a homo, you are a homo. No problem.

    But if you must change your sex, then you ARE A FREAK!! No ifs, ands, or buts!

    Don't yell at those of us who are NORMAL and do not have these issues. I pray for you all and hope that your lives amount to something!

    Lets be honest here, his after picture does look a hell of a lot better than his before.

    Dillon is an idiot and a bigot. A Catholic nun once told me,"God made you a man and that's what your're supposed to be!" Oh really? Just because these people don't have the problem, they think they can speak in the name of God. How would the Catholic nun like it if she grew a beard, moustache, hairy body and bald head? Would she be comfortable with that? I think not.

    I've fought gender dysphoria all my life,I've been ridiculed and beaten up because I didn't "conform". I've taken hormones, had surgery, electrolysis, and now I can be ME! I care not what others think, I will wear my female clothes. In the workplace, if someone doesn't speak to you... another person will.

    It amazes me that most boys and adult males enjoy being that... buzzed off haircuts, hairy bods, goatees, moustaches, bald heads. They seem to WANT to make themselves look ugly. I hated everything pertaining to be male. I have no interest in sports. Transitioning is the most expensive and humiliating thing I can imagine. In doing so... you find who your friends really are. I like women... so this makes me a lesbian, I would think. Being gay or lesbian is wrong in this society too. Need I say more?

    well Im with katrina, and jenny,,its amazing what people dont know,,since I have fought the gender dysphoria problem too,all my life,,and often wondered how things would have been if I could have transitioned when I was much younger,

    my deepest respect for katrina for being able to make the change,,and if linda can do it,,Im sure she will be much happier, after transition,,,

  • Kaimetsu

    Damn that dillion guy is an idiot, i hate these christian conservative right wing fundamentalist bigots. I sure as hell don't have this problem but all scientific evidence suggests that gender dysphoria is real, something physical that people are born with. If there is a god then it seems that he/she/it did indeed make a mistake, dillions black and white view of the world makes me sick.

  • Jenny

    I just wish I had the guts to do the same thing. I am a 35 year old man who desperately wants the body to match how I feel inside, which is female.

    Society sucks. There are so many men out there who want to be girls. Most of us just suppress this because of fear of rejection by friends, family & society in general. If our world was more understanding, stats say that 1 in 4 men would go for it and become women.

    I for one don't know how much longer I can go on in my current male role. Go Larry Go.
