Since it was in Page Six and The Smoking Gun, it's not new news that Larry Wachowski, half of the creative team behind The Matrix, has been having marital problems and is in a relationship with a dominatrix. The dominatrix's husband, Jake Miller, bitter over being left, guessed that Wachowski was wearing "bra and panties" under his suit at the premiere. Which then leads to speculation about Wachowski's sexuality/sexual issues.
Jeffrey Wells says he heard a rumor in March about how Wachowski wanted to live the rest of his life as a woman, but dismissed it. Then Wells was taken aback by the various reports:
- Jake Miller (apparently a transsexual);
- Wachowski's divorce papers that allude to his "dishonesty" in the marriage;
- Chicago Sun-Times columnist Bill Zwecker quoting a studio suit "Now I know why Larry paid so much attention during our costuming meetings";
- Time magazine article rolling up the same information but also adding a comment about the hat Wachowski wore to the Cannes premiere;
- And, finally, fellow movie journalist Dave Poland's column about the situation, in which Poland hems and haws about whether or not to write about it, finally writing, "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation."
Wells adds, "I don't think of myself as a bigot or a jerk, but I do feel turned around by the Larry thing. It's a creaky old sentiment, but whatever lights your fire is okay by me. It's just that I've always thought of filmmakers who are into martial-arts sequences and comic-book inspirations and Japanimation as...I don't know, a little bit geeky and dorky in a kind of routinely male, vaguely grungy, non-glammy sort of way. And I don't know where to put the Larry thing. It doesn't seem to fit...
One final thought: in every photo I've ever seen of Larry Wachowski, and in the interview footage he submitted to (along with his brother, Andy) for the MATRIX REVISITED DVD, he's always seemed somber and vaguely pained -- half-frowning in a thoughtful, weight-of-the-world, heavy-cat sort of way. But he appears to be sailing on some kind of euphoric high in that TIME magazine photo. He looks happy. That should count for something."
Wells and Poland are quick to defend Wachowski's decision as well as point out that if this is true, then Wachowski is very vulnerable, undergoing a hugely difficult self-examination. Which means that they (noted admireres of Matrix: Revolutions) are trying to tell their readers not to be judgemental jerks, logically expecting part of their reader audience to be horrified.
Gothamist is intrigued by this information, both as rumor-turned-possible-truth and as an example of something that people don't tend to talk or think about being brought to the fore because a celebrity is involved, but beyond that, and wondering like others what Larry Wachowski might change his name to (Lara? Laraine? Laura? Lori?), the evidence has to do the talking for now. We already noted how the Matrix films could be read with a whole new subtext with the news of the dominatrix in Wachowski's life.

holy cannoli- larry wachowski gets a sex change and it's not on every front page in the country? what the hell? is salacious celebrity gossip not still our national preoccupation? America, what happened to you? You used to be cool.
my feeling is that larry, linda, or whatever he's changed his name to is fair game for our interest and analysis. for one, he is famous. for two, he continue to appear in public, so it's not like he's avoiding the press. for three, he's made a movie that had the strangest sexual politics of all time, including quite a number of themes involving sexual inversion. to name just a few: in the first movie, trinity saves neo's life, inverting the normal movie convention. then throw in all those long slow shots of muscular women kicking ass and you sort of get the feeling of what is going on in larry's head.
the problem with sex change operations are that they are so messy. i mean, what we really need are brain transplants- no muss, no fuss. if we had those i'd be kicking it in lizzie maguire's body right now.
Also, add in Bound to the mix of films...as Wells points out, looking at that again certainly gives this other interesting perspective from the Wachowskis' POV.
But it's not just sexual inversion; a lot of critics have pointed out that the world of Zion is more ethnically balanced - it's about a number of underrepresented minorities, be they women, different races, children (the kids who wait for the Oracle), getting their stories told.
I loved Orlando (the book) and thought Sally Potter's film version did a pretty good job interpreting it.
In any case, I think he'll change his name to Trinity.
Well, I don't really think dude's sex life is any of my business. But if (and it still sounds crazy) a sex change does happen, it would make sense given that the Matrix trilogy is all about the mental AND physical transformation of Neo (keanu reeves) into something entirely different from what he started out as. I'm not into whips, shiny leather, or wearing high heels, but if this rumor turns out to be true it won't diminish my respect and admiration for the incredible talents of Larry and his brother Andy as directors one bit.
I guess the won't be able to sign their work as "Written and Directed by the Wachowski Brothers" anymore. Any suggestions?
at least there'll be a woman director getting big hollywood films made...
When people said the costuming for "The Matrix" was really hip and new, I thought, "this is the same BDSM-derived, vaguely goth stuff that people have been wearing to clubs for years."
Makes more sense now...
What would YOU do if you were not afraid?
Larry knows these things because I know these things.
Nothing is true everything is permitted.

No wonder the Matrix Reloaded sucked so bad.. he couldn't even decide what was what with himself!
This is beautiful, he has the guts to stand up in public and say "this is me". Very refeshing for those of us who are like-minded to see a celeb come out like this. Too often transgendered people are demonized, as in Silence of the Lambs where the serial killer is portrayed tucking himself under and demonstrating obvious gender-crossing desires. The makers of that film intentionally use that material to make him more evil and grotesque in a world that does not understand or sympathize with those of us who don't feel comfortable in the gender role forced upon us without our consent. Way to go Larry! We love you :)
I think that it is beautiful that Larry wants to become a woman. The fact that 1 out of 10 men are changing their sex to female, 4 out of 10 men take female hormones but don't have the surgery & 8 out of 10 men think about and/or want to become women but don't admit it, should show us just how common this is becoming. If Larry was transisioning before any of the Matrix movies came about, I really don't think that any studio would have given them the time of day. If anything, Larry would have been out of the loop due to the ignorance and fear of having so-called bad press. Since he waited until now was smart because now he has the money for the gender change & nobody can "shun" him away for wanting to have an upgrade & become a woman while making movies. His, um, her pay will not be "cut" due to being a woman I'm sure. The only cut he will have is when he wakes up from the surgery & realizes that the pain and lie is over. All of us must be understanding & educate ourselves on this transgender subject so that we can make the lives of those that are going through this a little easier. Who cares if he wants to be a she. It's amazing how shocked people get from this subject. Statistics show that Male to Female sex changing is on the rise, so we should all get used to seeing more of this. Way to go Larry! You go girl! Your fans love you whether you stand or sit to pee. :-)
On behalf of the TS communitee, I find this article biased, and most of your comments to be uneducated at best. (except ashley's) The article makes it sound as if being TS is wrong or something that someone just decides; at no time in my life did I feel male. I have the sex of a male, but not the gender. Its not a sex change operation, it is refered to as Gender-Reassignment-Surgery, as it has more psycological benefits then cosmetic. Whatever is going on with Larry is of NO consequence to anyone but him.
Jake, I'm TS and I go out in public, but that does not give you any right to gawk at me like a 2nd grader.
Current Ratio of TS (Including FtM's as well as MtF's) to non TS: 2:2500
It hasnt changed, its just becoming more acceptable that young people come out. You've probably already met a lot of us and didnt even notice.
if you dress like a women are you gay i not i love women but i feel good dress in women clothes
Does it really matter what gender or sex a director is? This person co-wrote an excellent trilogy (as a guess; I haven't seen the third part yet and I doubt many other people have either). Good for em.
As far as the naming goes, you don't *have* to change your forename to one that begins with the same letter as your old one. Why most people think all TS' do this is beyond me.
And this is about expressing eir gender, not anything to do with eir sexuality. Trust me on this one. Eir sexuality seems to be more BDSM oriented than anything else judging by the films.
So let's just leave em be so ey can write more good films.
you douche bags this is a load of crap, it's been debunked in Wired and it's a pretty factless article might I add.
Sei bello e fresco...ma non fai per me
um, "uhh", the Wired article you reference is here:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.11/matrix.html?pg=2
the item merely points out that one source of the rumour, Larry's girlfriend's ex (a female-to-male transsexual), said he was paid for his story and has no first-hand knowledge of Larry's alleged change. The item does claim, citing a source who knows Larry, that he is "merely a cross-dresser."
As Gothamist cited all its sources (which, in turn, note it is mostly conjecture) calling the piece crap and factless is not only uncalled for, but just plain incorrect.
First of all I'm not sure ezactly if this is real but I have to say that this is one sick "child"!!! I think it's really sad when people dont deal with childhood traumas and then mutalate their bodies instead of just facing them. I think it's funny how TSes say that God made a mistake, but then again maybe they was there when he was drawing up the blueprints.

I think it's funny how TSes say that God made a mistake, but maybe for all I know, they was there when he was drawing up the blueprints.
Um, Dillon, I was just wondering, as a transsexual, what kind of childhood trauma I'm supposed to have. Whatever it is, my memory must be doing a great job of suppressing it.
Well I'm not a therapist or anything and I cant tell you what problems you have because, I dont even know who you are. I'm sure that if you sat down with someone who wasn't afraid to listen then I'm sure you would uncover some things that maybe you weren't aware of things that have motivated your behavior. Everyone makes choices for a reason people dont make choices based on nothing. If Larry or whatever he's being called always thought he was a woman. there are many questions that you can ask to get to the source of the problem. There is a source, but I dont know what it is. Everyone's unique. everyone's problem may be different but I'm sure it's there. It'll only be found if he or that person wants it to be.

Well I'd always thought the most likely possibility for feeling the way any transsexual does, is a discrepancy between the sex of the brain and the sex of the body. Modern evidence shows this to be true, studying the size of the hypothalamus. It's believed to be caused by too must testosterone in the womb, I think.
But I don't know of any transsexuals with childhood traumas to my knowledge (or transvestites for that matter, as it's Larry Wachowski this is about, and I don't know which ey is in all honesty).
Either way, science is pointing at a physical reason, not a mental one, for any kind of transgendered feelings.
nice

Dillion:
Don't play idiot, it have been known for ages
that there is no psychological
cure for transsexualism and it is not just
imagination, caused by trauma or something.
As a male to female transsexual by myself,
I can say that I know. The feelings really are
true and they are very real from the early childhood. In fact, I thought when I was
young child that every boy wants to be a girl,
it felt like a very stupid idea that someone
likes to be a guy. In fact, later I realized
that all the other "boys" felt that they were
boys and liked being boys. I understood to
keep my mouth shut until at age of 25 I finally had courage to apply to transsexual examinations and start the process. Most my fears were unfounded and I feel that I could (and should) have started the process earlier.
And if someone (Dillion) thinks the surgeries are mutilations, they are wrong.
For example SRS (sex reassignment surgery)
is a very sophisticated operation where
nerves are carefully retained and I am
glad to inform you that my post-op genitals
are fully functional and I am well orgasmic.
With for example Dr. Suporn's technique that is
possible :). Look at http://www.srs-thailand.com for more information. The truth is the opposite than males tend to think - size definately does not matter. My little clitoris
and the two other glans derived parts in
my genitals have quite the same sensation than
the whole penis had prior to the operation.
About childhood traumas: I didn't have any.
And my feeling of being girl goes so far
to the past as I can remember. And as Zoe
Blade just told, according to the newest
research, the reason is physical. In fact,
the most logical explanation is that the
all transsexuals are mildly intersexual,
so mildly that it have affected only some
brain cells. Little problem in genetics can
do some not so funny little things.
And about the hormonal surgical and social
transformation, does it worth it?
Yes. Certainly, I have never been happier
than I am now. For a person who is born
to the body of right gender, it may be
very hard to understand the joy of being
in the body of the correct gender because
they haven't ever felt the hell the living
in the opposite gender body indeed was.
Katriina from Finland, post-op male to female
transsexual (post SRS & post FFS).
Novadays legally female and living
in a happy long term relationship.
I just wish I had the guts to do the same thing. I am a 35 year old man who desperately wants the body to match how I feel inside, which is female.
Society sucks. There are so many men out there who want to be girls. Most of us just suppress this because of fear of rejection by friends, family & society in general. If our world was more understanding, stats say that 1 in 4 men would go for it and become women.
I for one don't know how much longer I can go on in my current male role. Go Larry Go.
Damn that dillion guy is an idiot, i hate these christian conservative right wing fundamentalist bigots. I sure as hell don't have this problem but all scientific evidence suggests that gender dysphoria is real, something physical that people are born with. If there is a god then it seems that he/she/it did indeed make a mistake, dillions black and white view of the world makes me sick.
well Im with katrina, and jenny,,its amazing what people dont know,,since I have fought the gender dysphoria problem too,all my life,,and often wondered how things would have been if I could have transitioned when I was much younger,
my deepest respect for katrina for being able to make the change,,and if linda can do it,,Im sure she will be much happier, after transition,,,
Dillon is an idiot and a bigot. A Catholic nun once told me,"God made you a man and that's what your're supposed to be!" Oh really? Just because these people don't have the problem, they think they can speak in the name of God. How would the Catholic nun like it if she grew a beard, moustache, hairy body and bald head? Would she be comfortable with that? I think not.
I've fought gender dysphoria all my life,I've been ridiculed and beaten up because I didn't "conform". I've taken hormones, had surgery, electrolysis, and now I can be ME! I care not what others think, I will wear my female clothes. In the workplace, if someone doesn't speak to you... another person will.
It amazes me that most boys and adult males enjoy being that... buzzed off haircuts, hairy bods, goatees, moustaches, bald heads. They seem to WANT to make themselves look ugly. I hated everything pertaining to be male. I have no interest in sports. Transitioning is the most expensive and humiliating thing I can imagine. In doing so... you find who your friends really are. I like women... so this makes me a lesbian, I would think. Being gay or lesbian is wrong in this society too. Need I say more?

Lets be honest here, his after picture does look a hell of a lot better than his before.
If you are a homo, you are a homo. No problem.
But if you must change your sex, then you ARE A FREAK!! No ifs, ands, or buts!
Don't yell at those of us who are NORMAL and do not have these issues. I pray for you all and hope that your lives amount to something!

"gender dysphoria is real"
Schitzophrenia is real, that doesn't mean you deal with it by getting each of your personalities their own drivers license.
Damn gonad-choppin' loonies.
Your article make interes to the problem.s
2 things I want to say:
If one of the Wachowski brothers did get a sex change, then why was "V for Vendetta's credits saying "directed by the Wachowski Brothers" just like in the Matrix movies that were made before this news came out?
fatmouse's comment about schizophrenia bothers me because he referenced multiple personalities. Schizophrenia does not mean you have multiple personalities -- multiple personality disorder (or just "being a multiple") means you have split personalities. It's nitpicking and it's irrelevant I know, and I'm sorry, but I had to get it out.
Very interesting article. Thanks.
HI I LIKE TO WEAR PANTIES AND OTHER SILKY STUFF EVER SINCE I WAS A SMALL TEEN NOW IM 34 AND STILL SLIPPING ELSE A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE ON A SIZE SIX WASTE IM READY TO TRANSFORM

Madonna says she may adopt another child from abroad following her proposed adoption of a Malawian boy...
I care more about the fact that the Wachowski brothers are being sued for copyright infringement for THE MATRIX. Has anyone else heard about this lawsuit. Supposedly, the same woman that wrote THE MATRIX is also responsible for TERMINATOR and she can prove it. If she wins she gets 3X the GROSS PROFIT for both franchises.
hi everyone ..
i have an idear about martix .
it could be better than what it is .so if someone interested ,he can email me .
there is another thing .. i have a (trash) or an idear .. i don't if could be a movie ,but it is talking about (after death).
I hope women view these stories with less tough judgment than men. I have always felt that I was born a gay man in a woman's body. I love smooth skin and sex but when a woman tries to make love to me, I feel totally unfulfilled. If Larry becomes Lana Wachowski, they can't change his birth certificate from being born male to being born female, can they? It won't make any difference to me either way. I love the films these people make. They would do well to help some of our people to make it big in the entertainment industry. "Our people" being Native North American Indians. They don't make such a big deal out of transgendered people. PrincessPrecociousOne Dual Citizen...not Canadian nor American!
AGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...JUST F-ED UP...gd another gay waisting air...y dont gay ppl just die???
