Gothamist received an invite to hear contributors to the Dictionary of Failed Relationships speak at the Chelsea Barnes & Noble tonight. Apparently, we must have been put on the list of "People who'd write about failed relationships or people who have been in their share." Jake would like to protest that, but as Jen posts more, Gothamist guesses it's appropriate.
NY magazine writer Amy Sohn will be one of the readers. Last time we mentioned Amy, she posted a comment, so we'll be using this post as an experiment to see how fast she responds. Our hypothesis for SRT (Sohn Response Time): 10 minutes.

Okay, it's 11:21, about 141 minutes since we posted the piece. Amy Sohn must still be out partying.
can anyone go to this thing, or do you have to be an expert? thought, i am approaching expert status rapidly.
It's open to the public, but, apparently, they wanted to make sure I knew about it. As I have read many of the authors (Amy Sohn, Lucinda Rosenfeld, Jennifer Weiner), I suspect that I'm being watched or Barnes and Noble's customer buying profile is being cross-tabbed against people who blog about relationship material.
Well, I've blogged plenty about relationships and I didn't get an invite, so that theory's out.
On the other hand, you guys probably get more readers in half-a-day than I get in a month, so perhaps that has something to do with it.
I'm definitely going to this reading tonight, and have invited several male friends. This will be the best opportunity to meet single women since The Vagina Monologues played Madison Square Garden!
it's been a few hours and still no sohn- i'm thinking she might have been kidnapped by elizabeth spiers. someone should get a message to her editors.
OK, it wasn't the best opportunity to meet women since The Vagina Monologues did MSG. I expected a ratio of 4:1 women/men, but it was actually more like 4:2:4:1 straight woman/lesbian/gay man/straight man, which made things too confusing to make any serious attempt at flirtation.
In answer to Gawker's question from yesterday, YES, Amy Sohn is hot. She's also got some theatrical talent (more than one would expect of someone relegated to playing Mrs. Darling in a school production of Peter Pan) which made her reading among the best of the evening.
Meredith Broussard led off, and if bitter were butter, the B&N would have been a dish of shrimp scampi. It was uncomfortable. Happily, most of the other reader/writers were not so romantically disgruntled.
That said, Lucinda Rosenfeld irked me a little bit. Seemed a bit impressed with herself, also used the phrase "white trash" in her story to describe someone of middle or lower-middle class, non-urban, Christian background, which always bugs me (being someone of middle class, non-urban, Christian background who knows what REAL white trash is and who resents any comparison).
Aserdaten, even though it wasn't that great for meeting the ladies, Gothamist likes your style. You get the gold star.
(I would have gone, if I hadn't (a) collapsed from exhaustion and fallen asleep and (b) realized I should take pictures of the Radiohead hipsters. I'm sorry I missed Amy Sohn, though.)
