Highline

The Friends of the Highline held a competition to further think of new ways to save the abandoned elevated railroad line on the West Side. The Times reports on the winners of the competition, who come from all over the world. Though none of the designs will get built, Gothamist loves hearing around ideas like winners Takuji Nakamura's proposal "illuminated shafts penetrating the viaduct, with stairs and elevators" and Nathalie Rinne's imagining of the space as a 7,920-foot-long swimming pool. And the Times notes that the presence of City Planning Director Vishaan Chakrabarti on the jury for the competition may mean that the city will consider measures to preserve the space.

i think whatever they do with the highline, it should connect to the railroad that was once there- so if there is a park, there could be a cute little tram that goes through it or something.

Great pics, Jake. Where did you access the High Line from?

here's what you want to do- and don't blame me if the FBI arrests you or something. the rails come down to grade behind the truck yard just north of the rail yard on 34th street and the water. the yard is open, so you can just walk through, climb up on the rails, and start walking. you'll walk for awhile and then come to the first of many steel walls that were put up to keep people out. luckily, they all have holes- you'll have to crawl so don't wear anything too nice. You can explore as far south as Gansevort street- but the last three or four blocks are tougher. The big thing to see is the pass-through pictured above- it's at 15th street. Once you are done, get back by climbing down the crumbling steps near 17th street- you might miss them but they are there. the last three or four flights are missing, but you can climb on the pipes. Then you are done. Go get drinks at Park or lunch at Florent.

Just like to mention that the 17th Street exit is no longer accessible...there's a new fence around it. So, if you're going to get on the High Line @ 33rd, be prepared to return there to exit.
