Stooling on Irving Place

Washington Irving High SchoolGothamist knew the kids at Washington Irving High School on Irving Place were violent, but this is crazy: A woman was injured by a stool that was thrown out the 6th floor window of the high school. "It was a big thud. Next thing she wasn't walking; she went down very fast," said real estate broker Robert Morrison, who was walking across the street. "Blood was profusely coming out the side of her head." The victim is currently in the hospital. Apparently, the kids there like to throw things, since there was a telephone in the trees as well.

When this occured, I knew the two students that did this. They were trouble themselves and really don't reflect the students in the school. Yes, some are violent, but the majority of students have common sense and self control. Also, if the school had passable security, this would have never occured. I remember seeing Daily News the following morning with the headline "SCHOOL FROM HELL" or something along that line. I laughed really hard, because of course, it was an extream exaggeration. The media makes me laugh. So do you.

I graduated from WIHS in 1961. Back then it was an all-girls school. We were the sister school to Bronx High School of Science. We wore heels, tight skirts and sweaters to school. Seniors carried their books in "hat boxes". You could never, ever wear slacks to school. The place was prestigious-if not elegant. We had the highest percentage of Regents Scholarship winners in NYC (among public school students). What a difference now!

back in 1992 i went to stuyvesant h.s. when it was down on 15th and 1st. every couple of weeks a crazy mob of washington irving kids would go wilding in stuyvesant park and kick the crap out of 10 or 20 stuyvesant kids. it was like the burly brawl scene in the matrix- except instead of agent smiths, nerds were flying everywhere.

  • I walked past the police barricade my way home from Union Square this afternoon and wondered what had happened, but I never would have guessed a "stooling."
