Kim Masters is one of the best Hollywood investigative reporters today. She's been writing features for a number of publications (like the recent one in Esquire about Scott Rudin or the one on Harvey and Marty) as well as a great book about Hollywood excess in the form of Jon Peters and Peter Guber, Hit and Run with Nancy Griffin, but this past weekend's piece about what really happened with Tobey Maguire and Spiderman is amazing: She gets Tobey Maguire's first comments about his arrogance, firing, re-hiring, and subsequent humility over the experience. Tobey probably realized what an agent says about the possibility of losing the Spiderman role: "Tobey Maguire the actor would have survived. But Tobey Maguire the multimillion-dollar movie star? I don't know."

It's naive to think that Kim Masters got access to these people in this version of the Tobey Maguire/Spider-Man story because she is "one of the best Hollywood investigative reporters today."
The only reason she got the Harvey and Marty story is because she was sanctioned by Miramax-paid publicist Pat Kingsley to write it. At the time Miramax was doing damage control on a movie whose ugly rumors were running rampant.
Masters was given just enough access (she never even saw the whole movie before writing the "Gangs" story) to craft a piece about two men who have their own quirks but just love to make great movies.
Masters' skill is to write with just enough edge to make the reader feel like they're reading the real deal. In actuality we are reading publicist strategized, planted features. And Masters is only too willing to help the spinmeisters.
Stop groveling and read between the lines a little here.

All stories about the movie industry are controlled to some degree by publicists, that much is true. And certainly the Gangs piece might have been sweeter than the Times supposed ratchet job. In this case of the Tobey Maguire story, it may paint a picture of a more humble Tobey, but it's not terribly flattering. Her story on Scott Rudin damning also - it was reaffirmation of the Scott Rudin is insane line of thinking.
And as someone who has worked in movie publicity, I'm familiar with publicist spin, but thanks for reminding me not to be dazzled by interesting and new information.
