Stuyvsant and the Fight for Cash Money

stuyvesanthighschool.jpgLeave it to the most prestigious public high school in the country, Stuyvesant High School on Chambers Street, to be mired in a fund-raising snit. The factions: A fund run started by former principal Jinx Cozzi Perullo, "Campaign for Stuyvesant," and the other, "The Case for Stuyvesant," is run by parent (and professional fundraiser) Gabrielle Schang and alum Han-Tsien Tuan.

The article mentions Boston Latin, a prestigious public high school with prowess in fundraising. Gothamist argues Stuyvesant is more elite, as its students are in the best city in the world.

My old boss, Stan Teitel, will settle this his own way. It sounds like the expenses on Jinx's fund were running pretty high- and no cash was coming into the school. And of course, Stan likes to be in control of things- there's no way he'll put up with outside directors maintaining control of the fund.

You know Han-Tsien Tuan is Ah Mau as in the Tuans in NYC.

Wait a minute, you mean Han? No way!

Fund raising's always been a problem for Stuy.. in particular because it used to be that if a parent donated, it went in to a general fund (not specific to Stuy.) The (state-funded) physical plant aside, Stuyvesant apparently spends less per student than just about any other public school in New York.

Stuy would really benefit from a more professional alumni assocation -- a more complete database for networking, better events, and more direct mail. I know it's hard to compare a college/grad school to a high school, but there's probably more Stuy grads in the NYC area than any major college -- it should be a major force in term sof networking and fundraising.

I'm down to start a young alumni club if you are, Tom. Or at least to figure out some more ways for them to raise some cash. I joined the alumni association again last week- a bargain at only $35.
