Bling Bling!

Lakers Championship RingMTV proudly jumped the gun in reporting that "bling bling" has been added to the Oxford Dictionary of English. "Bling bling," originating from Cash Money Millionaire rap artist BG (BG is short for Baby Gangsta!), describes "diamonds, jewelry and all forms of showy style." MTV asked BG for his reaction: " 'Bling bling' will never be forgotten. So it's like I will never be forgotten. I just wish that I'd trademarked it, so I'd never have to work again." But, as a Metafilter reader pointed out, it's not in the dictionary yet. [Via Metafilter]

Gothamist found this other BG quote interesting: "I'm so surprised that that word has spread like it has. But I knew it was serious when I saw that the NBA championship ring for the Los Angeles Lakers had the word 'bling bling' written in diamonds on it." In true Gothamist fashion, we had to see if it was true. Even before reading the article, we guessed it was Shaq's idea.

The Oxford Dictionary of English, home of Beowulf and now Baby Gangsta. And only because it rhymes, Yeungling Brewery.
