Central Park turns 150

Central Park used to have the Croton Reservoir where the Great Lawn is nowCentral Park is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, and you can find out all the details at the 150th Anniversary page, but the official word comes today. Still, the Central Park Conservancy President Regina Peruggi tells us this:

Save Saturday, July 19, for the Parkwide 150th birthday bash from dawn till dark. The day starts with a bicycle race and ends with an old-fashioned concert on the Great Lawn. There will be a dog parade; a four-mile walk/run; kids’ races for ages 2 through 12; storytelling; a happy birthday parade led by a band and a children’s chorus that will culminate in cutting the birthday cake; and dancing to music provided by Jazzmobile and the Count Basie Orchestra. Throughout the day, events include playground parties with jugglers and magicians, a world-championship archery competition, a discovery hunt for children, and a Revolutionary War encampment on the Great Hill with activities for all ages.

Dog parade? Gothamist is there!

WNBC also has a whole section dedicated to Central Park's 150th.

According to Prospect Park History, Prospect Park celebrated its 100th in 1966, so Gothamist assumes that PP's 150th is in 2016.
