Segway and the City

Segways in Times Square; Photo - NY Daily News

The Daily News profiles actual Segway owners in New York City. As for using it in the city, the News reports:

Building security can get downright ornery when a Segway rolls into their lobby. Naysayers are concerned about clogged streets and clogged arteries.

By Segway's count, 34 states permit Segways on sidewalks. In New York, there are no rules governing Segway. But the state Senate is considering a bill that would permit them on sidewalks everywhere except New York City.

Everyone enthuses about the machine, including one owner, Itsi Atkins, a retired film production manager who has ridden his Segway in the St. Patrick's Day parade, inside an Atlantic City casino and from booth-to-booth at the Triple Pier Antiques Show, who says, "It's the same reason why 'Chicago' won the Academy Award. 'Chicago' was lighthearted and fun, and Segway is the same. It's a joy to see people smile when they see it." Huh? Everyone KNOWS Chicago won because Miramax had a very aggressive marketing campaign, starting with... Oh, screw it.

Buy a Segway at Gizmodo, where there is a lot of supporting Segway information as well.

Gothamist's previous Segway coverage: Gina Gershon couldn't ride a segway but some dude in Brooklyn can.

    bryan-

it might not be "better" than public transit and it might not make sense in the subway and / or buses, but for many people it might.

the "last 5 miles" for many people is the reason they won't take public transit, for example. people live 5-10 miles from a train station or they live far from a bus stop either direction, so they choose to drive their cars.

i travel to nyc often, and i take the subways for every trip i can, but often i need to take a cab with some of the place i go. it's a drag to take 3,000lb metal gas car to haul my 165lb butt only a few miles.

like i said, it's not the best solution for all scenarios (and maybe not in all places) that's the hard part for many people, if it doesn't match their travel needs, they can't imagine it. but for many people this could get them out of cars and use public transit even more.

there are many people in nj, cali and other cities that are using the ht to get to a train station then they take the ht to their destination. they've been able to give up using a car on both sides.

my pal lives in brooklyn and takes the ht to the subway each day as opposed to a cab or car service, seems to work for him. another group of people i know (actually some from the article) commute from upstate new york.

    cheers,

pt, i understand needing to commute to work, but what about the subway, or buses? How is a segway better then publlic transportation in new york?

ed (if that's really what your name is)...i don't work with or for the company or get paid in any way. i also "champion" macs, linux, pocket pcs and other things i like and write about. the ht isn't perfect by any means.

    cheers,

omigod phil, we get it - you like your segway. every time i see an article that mentions anything even remotely bad about it, you come leaping out of the corner championing everthing that is the personal transporter. do they pay you or something?

the segway ht replaced my car, not walking. i run a few miles per day, cycle- all that. i just don't sit on my ass in a 3,000 lb metal car to haul my 167 lbs a few miles a day.

car replacement, not walking replacement. i'd never walk 10 miles a day to / from work.

    cheers,

Segway is the end of civilization as we know it, what the hell is wrong with walking??

  • pt

i use a segway ht each day to get to work, you can read about it here, it might not be the best solution for everyone- but i'm happy with it so far:

Segway is the most retarded invention since peanut butter and jelly was put in the same jar.
