Gothamist Media Review: Lauren Weisberger on Today

Lauren Weisberger on TodayLauren Weisberger on Today

The Devil Wears Prada author and recent favorite Gothamist punching bag Lauren Weisberger must have gotten the memo from her publishers about toning down the "ungrateful brat" element of her shtick because her appearance on the Today Show showed a humbler, gentler Weisberger for our times. Campbell Brown asked if the editor in The Devil Wears Prada was really based on Anna Wintour; Weisberger demured and, taking a piece of Kate Betts' advice, said that she was lucky to have a "vantage point" few get by working at Vogue. She said her relationship with Anna was "professional" and had not spoken with Anna re: THE BOOK.

Weisberger also admitted reading the harsh reviews is difficult, but her friends inside and outside the fashion worlds have been supportive of her. Gothamist remembers when we've been supportive of friends: Enabling them to continue with their self-involved rants, setting up interventions.

Gothamist notices that Lauren Weisberger was not wearing Prada but Club Monaco.

Well it's obviously a first time book. However if Miss weisberger finds the fashion and entertainment industry so intensely vacuous why be a part of it?

This was one of the worst books I've ever read. Can't understand what the hoopla is all about

  • Harley

I would like Laura's next book to be titled "Miranda." Her story, from Orthodox Jewish English girl to wealthy, controlling bitch would make a fine book, and let's find out why she became the person she was and what finally happened to her and her family.

It was a great book and I enjoyed reading it - that is all that should matter to a reader. Do you boycott every movie and book when you don't agree with the author/director or think they are self absorbed? If you did that then you probably wouldn't see or read much at all because that is what most of the entertainment business is like - if you haven't noticed. Its not like she was writing historical reference - its called a novel for a reason - to relax and enjoy it- not discuss her life and how snobby or 'self-absorbed' she may be for writing a book right of college - which makes no sense anyway.

  • L.A.

Yawwwnnnn! I really can't understand for the life of me why this writer, this book inspires such debate. It's such a flash in the pan scenario, she's not garnering any literary accolades or nothin. Is it just that she slam dunked a book deal? Is that really the end-all, be-all? Oh whatever, I'll go back to sleep now. ZZzzzzzz.

  • AMANDA

Whether or not Laura Weisberger is personally unappealing is completely irrelevant to me when discussing her book. Anyone that has traveled in the fashion/entertainment circuits can definately recognize the superficiality and ridiculous nature of these businesses and how it not only condones but rewards bad behavior from one another. I applaud her for writing such a candid view of the idiocy of it all.

  • JOT

Come on, everyone, give the girl a break - she's done it - she's written a fabulous book. By the time I was 1/4 of the way through, I wanted to throttle Miranda - and that's what its all about - getting into the "story" - regardless if it reflects any "truth" or not....it was great!

    Congrats, Lauren.

  • PHS girl

hee hee...This is pure spite, but I do find it amusing that the caption under her picture on the Today Show link says "Laura Weisberger." couldn't even get her name right. nice.

  • Arinonymous

I met Lauren once at a frat party and believe me when I tell you she is one annoying bitch!!! I mean anyone who writes a successful book right out of college has to be a self-absorbed, stuck up, arrogant, Club Monaco wearing hussy! I mean cmon now! really Lauren, it's time you wake up and realize your not all your cracked up to be. Get a clue.....and a job!!!! I too, applaud all you go-getters who take the hours out of your busy day to set up an anti-Lauren website!!!!!

  • Jen

Well, for anyone who has actually read our writing on Gothamist, it's clear that we a) have too much time on our hands and b) are bitter about many things, not just Lauren Weisberger. Other targets of our bitterness: Mayor Bloomberg, bad reporting, and the lingering winter.

  • Tiffany

All you haters stop hating. You're just jealous and obviously have so much free time on your hands to continue to write about some random 26-year-old girl who, if you don't already know, made it big within one year of living in nyc (which is more than i can say for any of you)! Sounds like someone's bitter.

    Love you pumpkin!

  • Lisa

Well, I went to school with Miss Weisberger, she was a complete b-tch! So, I applaud all of the bad things said about her.

  • bill

I think she was wearing "Prada" shoes

  • Jen

Sam, don't question your satorial urges!

  • Damn, that Club Monaco gear is rad, I am not even kidding. That black and white flower print set on the bottom right is totally me... Er, at least it would be if, you know... Nevermind.
