Amy Sedaris

Amy Sedaris; Photo - PaperOne of Gothamist's favorite fun, fearless females (tm Cosmopolitan) is Amy Sedaris, featured in Simon Doonan's Observer column today, which in itself is an excerpt of his upcoming book, "Wacky Chicks: Life Lessons from Fearlessly Inappropriate and Fabulously Eccentric Women." Which is the nice way of saying "crazy and in the public."

Crazy is what Gothamist loves, and Gothamist loves Amy Sedaris. Ever since Jerri Blank came to Flatpoint High and Comedy Central, we thought, "Who is that crazy, ugly, old lady?" As it turned out, it was a crazy, attractive young lady with a killer desire to perform, most notably documented in brother David's books, Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked (Amy, as a little girl, would impersonated one of her parents' female friends, called her dad at work as this friend, and essentially propositioned him; Amy, as a grown woman, with a dream of owning a fat suit).

Most recently, Amy Sedaris guest-starred on Sex and the City, but didn't get to exhibit her manic range. Her Late Show with David Letterman appearance last summer offered a glimpse: She called Sarah Jessica Parker "stingy, crisis-prone, selfish, two-faced" and expressed her love for SJP's husband, Matthew Broderick, plus used her pet rabbit's death as opportunity to practice playing "sad."

I went to see "A Play What I Wrote" during previews on a Saturday night and say SJP, Broderick, Sedaris, and a fourth person (looked like her brother David, but could have been her husband, who I've never seen: tallish, balding.) SJP wouldn't so much as speak to Matthew, to the point when a fan came up and asked for an autograph, she signed and passed the playbill and pen over her head to Matthew, sitting behind her. Sarah got up to go to the ladies or something, at which point Amy and Matthew finally started talking.

With any luck, they were badmouthing the twiggy witch. He could do so much better.

The Amy Sedaris photo shoot mentioned in David Sedaris's story "Shiner Like a Diamond" was for an issue of Paper magazine (http://www.papermag.com) from 1995 or 1996. They did a feature about the 100 sexiest (or most beautiful) people. I don't have a copy of this picture, but am trying to acquire the back issue.

Amy Sedaris (Jerry Blank from Strangers with Candy) is all about some PETA she did an anti-fur ad with them I guess, and now they are giving away Strangers With Candy Entire Series DVD –autographed by Sedaris. Super sick ass sweet.
