In a Funny Way

Laurel Canyon soundtrackI saw Laurel Canyon this weekend, and besides finding it a really good (it's been getting mixed reviews, but it really drew me in and involved me...it's richly atmospheric and has great acting...some things are a little clumsy, but overall, it worked), it has a fantastic soundtrack. The songs help you sink into the neo hippie lifestyle of Laurel Canyon and the Frances McDormand character, a free-living record producer. Songs for the band in the film were written by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse,
Laurel Canyon, with Lou Barlow and Folk Implosion making up the band behind Alessandro Nivola's lead singer character.

"In a funny way," the song that plays over the opening credits, is perfect and is from Mercury Rev

My favorite Alessandro Nivola role: Pollux Troy, brother to evil Castor Troy (played by Nicolas Cage first, then John Travolta) in Face/Off

The song is "Shade and Honey," lyric and music by Lou Barlow, sung by Alessandro Nivola. It's the song his character writes during the film. It's on the soundtrack.

No. Shade & Honey was written by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, a very fine and wonderful band that I recommend highly.

can you send me "shade and honey", if found!

You asked for the lyrics to the song Shade And Honey...well, here they are. Although, the first line of the second verse, I'm not sure about...it's hard to make out over the music. A lot of the lyrics make no sense, and grammar is right out the window. But, here it is:

Alessandro Nivola - Shade & Honey

I could look in your face
For a thousand years
It’s like a civil war
Of pain and of cheer

But if you was a horse
I could help you with your chains
I could ride you through the fields
By your fiery mane

May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey

I grab diamonds, write you a poem
'Cause no one here can save you
She’s returning to the Earth
But one day she’ll be silver

Stars are dying in my chest
Till I see you again
She was born with the wings of a hawk
Where she combs her hair with blood

May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey

May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey

May your shade be sweet
May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes...

May your shade be sweet

hi
i want to get Someday I´ll Treat You Good by Alessandro Nivola, Does Anyone have it? Or where do i get it?
Thanks

I just saw Laurel Canyon on HBO and was compelled to buy the soundtrack. I fell in love with "Shade & Honey" and am grateful to "Froggy" for writing out the lyrics. I would love the music too so I could play this on guitar!

i think the first line of the second verse (for shade & honey) is:

"don't cry diamonds, white bird..."

makes more sense, no?

Does anyone have the chords for "shade and honey"? Either for the ukulele or guitar.

instead of 'by your fiery mane' isnt it 'but your fire remains'??

The line is "by your fiery mane" Mark Linkous makes many references to horses in many of his songs and it makes sense because he is referring to his love as animals as he usually does.
As for the other line, it is "I cry diamonds and let it burn"
Just listen you will hear it. That is all.

***According to the original Sparklehorse version:

It is: "I cry diamonds while you burn" (and not "I grab diamonds, write you a poem"

and two picky corrections...

It is: "But now she combs her hair with blood" (and not "Where she combs her hair with blood")

It is: "Until I see you again" ... rather than "Till I see you again" ... ok that was really picky...

These corrections are again, according to the Sparklehorse original. I haven't heard the movie version in it's entirety. What a great song though! Post if you want it. I've got every Sparklehorse song!!!

Self-correction: The first line of the second verse is, "I cry diamonds while you burn".
