Oscar Countdown

Talk to HerWhen I read that Caetano Veloso was performing at the Oscars on March 23, I was excited, because I thought Caetano would perform "Cucurrucucu Paloma," which he performs in Talk to Her. But actually he will be singing "Burn it Blue," the nominated song from Frida, with Lila Downs. I'm sure it's good, but I'm also sure it's no "Cucurrucucu Paloma." "Cucurrucucu Paloma" is a mariachi song, about losing a love and when it's sung, it's a heartbreaking moment in the film.

The Oscar nominees had their official nominee luncheon. That's when they pose for pictures, get certificates that say they are a nominee, and pretend to like each other. This year, they got sweatshirts that say "Nominee" on them. Mmm. I wonder how many of them will wear them after they have lost. That'd be cool, but a Hollywood ego is a very fragile thing. Luckily, they can go to a place like Neighborhoodies and make themselves "Winner" sweatshirts to wear inside.

  • I've been going crazy over this song since I heard it in Wong Kar Wai's "Happy Together." Then when "Talk to Her" came around you'd think I would've gone and bought the soundtrack but alas no... I just pined away for it, singing it in my head until today when I got smart and looked for it online.
